Politico:

Even as Barack Obama takes eight days off from the campaign trail to vacation in Hawaii, where he lived for much of his youth, the Republican National Committee is again attempting to paint the Democrat as an out-of-touch elitist, this time in a mock "Barack Obama's Hawaii Travel Guide" tweaking the Democrat for having attended an elite prep school there.

"Barack Obama's Hawaii Travel Guide," e-mailed to reporters on Friday, lists four "destinations," among them the beach locals claim is the one where Obama was photographed in his swim trunks in a shot that ran in People magazine early last year, and "Punahou School, a coeducational college preparatory day school" that Obama attended "from 1971 to 1979. The school campus covers 76 acres at the edge of the Manoa Valley."

Obama, raised by a singe mother, entered the prestigious school at age ten on a scholarship. "No one means to demean the academic successes of Barack Obama or the schools he attended," said McCain spokesman Tucker Bounds. "The RNC and this campaign have sought to simply point out that on his Hawaii travels, there are certain landmarks reporters will likely see and this was a way to put those on the map."

Obama's elite schooling may prove a risky topic for McCain, who attended St. Stephen's, an exclusive school in Alexandria, Va., and then Episcopal High, a private boarding school in the same city, in the 1950s. The son and grandson of Navy admirals, he ended up at the Naval Academy, where, as he often reminds voters, he finished near the bottom of his graduating class.

Sour grapes! At least Obama did something with HIS education. McCain wasted his teacher's time.

Mabey the McCain camp is trying to appeal to Obama's biggest base: black people.
Mabey he's trying another "low raod" course in the hopes that this will add to the perception that "he is not really one of them".
Well...Obama certainly isn't white either...
So mabey they should cut this out
Accept the fact that this man is "a little bit of all of us".

Excuse me? Jessegirl. I certainly hope you are not insinuating that blacks do not value education. That comment is not only an insult but the stament is completely false.

Normally I wouldn't nit pick about typos on a blog, but in your case I will make an exception -- the spelling is maybe and not mabey.

I hope you feel better about yourself.
Someone that takes the effort to personally "spellcheck" and "nit pick"
reaffirms my opinion that you are being absurd.
A simple valuable explanation would fall on foolish ears.

I hope that they go ahead and try and attack his education: it is just another demonstration of how desperate they have become!

He went to a private school on scholarship, which is NOT affirmative action!

My daughter's school has scholarships and those kids are SMART.
2000 pp apply for 24 openings in a Kindergarten class.

Harvard Law Review is the ultimate merit position.

I agree with what has been said. I want a president that is smarter than. For the last almost 8 years, I've always felt I was smarter than the president.

Perhaps they're wondering where he got his Marxist philosophical roots and his desire to turn the USA into Bulgaria!

ARe Ameicans that stupid and insecure, that they want the person leading the free world to be just like them. I do not want to be in a position of knowing more than the President of the United States. I have been in tha that position for eight years now and I am tired of it!!

Most people want the best for their kids. Only far right evangelical wing nuts would ridicule a scholarship to a prestigious school. This line of attack is only going to alienate moderates. Most people who have graduated from the school of hard knocks want something better for their kids, Education is opportunity. Why would you want a man running our country who thinks a good education is a liability?

Maybe i'm stupid for saying this but. . .

I WANT a president that is smarter than me. I want a president that is so much smarter than me that I find it embarrassing that such a gap in intelligence can EXIST between two people.

If anyone from MoveOn is out there, I want you to release an ad cataloging all of John McCain's horrible comments about women, maybe spliced with a few clips of the buffalo chip Beauty Pageant he so dearly wanted his wife to participate in.

The subtext isn't he's elitist...it's he's uppity...got that education on affirmative action and did he keep your kid from going to college? McCain is not worried about his poor showing at school, because his ads are really about race...not competence...it's about the supremacy of simply being white...do not get fooled that these guys are pushing anything else but that. Which seems odd, because the audience for that message wouldn't have voted for Obama anyway. But I think these ads are trying to get the Republicans who cannot stand McCain back on track...they are trying to scare them to get them out to vote for ole McCain.

Just too educated to be running for President, judging by the current one......

Sen O is going too easy on MC he's had several opportunties to call him on the carpet. He should release an ad featuring J and C's fine living. He shouldn't let MC paint him as the ELITE ONE.
