CQ Politics:

A Wikipedia editor notices some similarities between Sen. John McCain's speech today on the crisis in Georgia and the Wikipedia article on the country Georgia. They appear similar enough that most people would consider parts of McCain's speech to be derived from Wikipedia.

It's likely that McCain never heard of Wikipedia. Looks like some staffer pulled the same "trick" you find in lazy students.

See, we shouldn't have showed him how to go on-line. Now he thinks he's the only one who has this treasure trove of information at his fingertips.

I guess next time he might want to think about lifting his speech from a more obscure site, like OldFools.com.

Please, there is nothing about McCain that is reasonable, rational, or reality-based. However, the whole plagiarism issue should be a non-issue. Everybody uses literature from someone, nobody prefaces that information by saying, "according to wikipedia" , no f*cking body does that. So, this is a non-issue.

But, but, but .... that's not what "they" would ever allow O!! May we just have some little quote unquote thingies!!? Pretty please .. especially regarding something that Russia or Georgia may just give differing accounts of!!

I hear you on the conflicting accounts, however, these historical references are very well documented from several sources. I don't however think he should be using others information on the current conflict, but should get as close to the principals accounts as possible, and then credit should be given to the source of that information. For example, Putin contends....or Saakashvili has suggested...

I guess he could have said "As has been historically documented......."

It just wasn't necessary in my opinion, but I certainly get your point.

Two friends sharing speech material with each others permission is a little different than cutting and pasting whole sections of material without attribution and passing it off as his own. In McCain's case it's not surprising he would crib. Given his stellar academic performance one would suspect he had more than a passing acquaintance with Cliff Notes around term paper time.

And the point of McCain is to make himself look presidential. But teenagers probably had a big hand in the Wikipedia entry!

This is no comparison to the Duval story. Wikipedia, even if it is properly cited, is not considered a respected source. The dumb bunny who did this was trying to pull a fast one and it backfired.

When asked about Wikipedia, McDolt said he wasn't into witchcraft and referred the question to Bobby Jindal.

Sure, he plagiarized his speech. How else did you expect him to contrive anything factual and coherent? After his dotage is great cause for concern.

He should at least give credit to Wikipedia.

If this was High School English, he would get a big, fat zero for plagiarism.

This is just another indication that McSame will be another Reagan, that is doing whatever he's told to do by his handlers. Do we want another committee running the executive branch of the government? If McSame is elected (heaven forbid) we can probably expect Cheney to keep his office in the Old Executive Building from whence he can dictate policy. McCain has practically invited him to do it. We really need to get a bulldozer and clean up D.C in November.

At least the McCain campaign did a little bit of research on this to avoid the types errors he's made earlier:
Sunni/Shia mixup, Iraq/Pakistan border, speaking of Yugoslovia as a current country, AQ training in Iran, etc.

Beats the Encyclopedia Brittanica (the 1953 volume) he's been relying on for all his other foreign policy information. unlike John at least wiki is up to date.

This is "paint by the numbers" foreign policy. Did McCain present any particular insights into the situation or did he simply regurgitate the information online available to anyone? I often look up information on WebMD. I guess I'm qualified to make medical diagnoses.
