Washington Independent:

"You'll have to forgive me for being an Eisenhower Republican," joked Susan Eisenhower, granddaughter of the former five-star general and two-term Republican president. The man who had helped lead America to victory over the forces of Axis darkness during World War II, then oversaw a period of unprecedented prosperity and suburban satisfaction during the 1950s.

Speaking on the telephone on Aug. 7 from her Washington office at The Eisenhower Institute, a think tank where she serves as president emeritus, the journalist-turned-foreign policy wonk explained her decision to publicly support Barack Obama after a lifetime in the Republican Party.

"I don't know how much you know about my grandfather's administration," Eisenhower said. "But that administration stood for multilateral engagement, balancing the budget. They were the party of civil rights, they were the party of environmental progress. That was the Republican Party of the 1950s. I think you can make the case that doesn't sound like the Republican Party we know today. If you look at the way Obama's run his campaign, to how Hillary Clinton ran her campaign, or even how John McCain's campaign is shaping up -- you can definitely say that Obama's running his campaign in a way an Eisenhower Republican would have run his campaign.

"He raises a lot of money," Eisenhower, 56, said, by way of explaining the similarities she sees between her grandfather and the likely Democratic nominee. "He has very little debt. I just love it. Anybody who wants to make him out as this wide-eyed liberal -- I just don't see any evidence for that, not in the way he runs his campaign. And this tells you a lot about how he can administer things, how he manages things, how he deals with situations.

Since Eisenhower probalby wouldn't have anything to do with the present day GOP, it is unlike that this represents a shift. Anyone with a brain AND not motivated by pure greed would have nothing to do with the party.

McCain is the worst candidate. Hillary was second worst candidate but she couldn't run her campaign effectively so she's out. So you are voting for your only option.
Voter D.B.A. a republican.

So that is your bottom line socialized Meds, when presently we have no med option. Something is better than what you've got but you sound like one of those people that say that they don't want to win lotto if it is only a million, you want to win big; nothing but the most, best for you.

But you do not tell us how you get there from no med safety net to McGrumpies idea that if ya can't afford it, then you do not need it.

Be sure and tell the soldiers that are fighting to win that you thought 100 years was A-OK; next pop in on the vets as they try to deal with the to bad so sad medical care that Mc is offering.

Wonderful; hope you stay healthy.

This is so spot on. One of the things that will tell you a lot about how a person will run the country is how they run their campaign. The Clinton people can say all they want but when you lose 13 million it shows that there is a real lack of ability to run a business (which is what a campaign is) and certainly doesn't bode well for the country. Don't just watch the ads people, watch the campains! Just so you know McCain is a really bad Senator and as far as I can tell hasn't done much for the people of AZ so I doubt he will do much for the people in the country, unless they are already rich of course!

Another person of substance standing behind this young candidate. This speaks volumes to me. She says it all. The Republican party in the last eight years (actually longer) has made a huge shift. It is no longer about representing all Americans when their candidate is elected, but seems to be only to represent their own interests and the actual destruction of this country. Are we still free? I ask myself everyday.

The fact that we have kept marching along and allowed the destruction of basic values that we stood for as a nation, is leading us down a horrible and dangerous path with the rest of the world. We keep espousing how great we are as a nation and allow the current administration to go forward with ignoring the Geneva convention and accepted international policies regarding war and conflict. Are we free? Or have we just left our values and morals behind?

Gen Dwight D. Eisenhower is probably the most under-appreciated President in U.S. history, and his grand-daughter is right. Barack Obama would be the best choice to heal a splintered nation, and he has shown to have more insight when it comes to economic policies (although he might want to do some research on the energy crisis)...Bill Clinton was intelligent, Eisenhower was intelligent, Lincoln was too, why not pick the smart guy America?

Sacramento Bee dated 11 Aug. 08.
"Democratic party numbers are up, and the gap is narrowing not only in Fresno County (fewer than 9000) but in other solidly Republican counties as well. "
Riverside County has lost 34,000 (!) since 10-04 and Orange County has dropped 4 percentage points!
Keep up the good work. We will overcome these "bushies" to take back the US and bring respect and honor back.

Well even the true Americans of the Republican Party still have good sense.

Not all Republicans think and live their life like they are in the movie Top Gun or Rockey.

Not all are Legends in their own minds.

Susan Eisenhower is an anachronistic throw back to when the republican party was almost normal, before the fanatical neocons led by Gingrich took over the party.

you are so correct. the republican party of today is 180 degrees to the right of the 1950's. i think that you can equate the today's republicans with the taliban, imposing their will and beliefs on everyone else like it or not.

Millions of Americans, including Democrats remember Eisenhower with affection and respect. Study History. Were it not for Eisenhower, you might not even be alive today. It takes a coalition to win a presidential election and America needs sensible Republicans to come over to Obama.
