More copies for book inspired by Edwards' mistress

NEW YORK — An old Jay McInerney novel featuring a party girl based on John Edwards' future mistress, Rielle Hunter, is getting a fresh printing from its publisher.

An additional 2,500 copies have been commissioned for "Story of My Life," according to Vintage Books, a paperback imprint of Random House, Inc. The book, first released in 1988, is narrated by a promiscuous, aspiring actress whom McInerney has said was inspired by Hunter _ then named Lisa Druck _ and a group of friends the author had met in New York.

As of Monday afternoon, "Story of My Life" was No. 470 on Amazon.com's best-seller list and was out of stock.

Edwards, a former Democratic presidential candidate and U.S. senator, acknowledged last week that he had had an affair with Hunter, who produced videos for Edwards as he prepared to launch his presidential race.

McInerney, 53, is best known for the million-selling "Bright Lights, Big City." His other works include "Ransom," "Brightness Falls" and "The Good Life."

I think I've enjoyed a couple of his books in the past but I wouldn't walk across the street to get this one, even if they paid ME.

I plan to read it just to see what kind of a woman Edwards got himself involved with. I also want to review his behavior that led me to support his policies to see if there is any clue as to how he would eventually betray his own policies and his marriage. I got suckered once, make that twice, into supporting Bill Clinton, then Edwards, and I would rather it wouldn't happen again. Is this random behavior on the part of arrogant politicians, or is there some way to tell what types will engage in blatant career-damaging philandering? I would like to know.

What was it about THIS particular woman that led Edwards to behave so recklessly? Certainly, from the photographs and from her behavior in which she blabbed about her relationship with him to her friends and relatives, she is not a stunning beauty nor a model of discretion. Or would he have strayed with any woman who hit on him in a bar? How awful for a wife and mother to know that she has a fatal disease and that her young children could be raised by a creepy dippy home-wrecking woman or any another one chosen by a man who willingly messed around with a woman like Hunter.
