United States' Michael Phelps swims to the gold as he sets a new world record in the men's 200-meter freestyle final during the swimming competitions in the National Aquatics Center at the Beijing 2008 Olympics in Beijing, Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2008. (AP Photo/Greg Baker)

BEIJING — Michael Phelps etched his name with Mark Spitz and Carl Lewis among the winningest Olympians ever Tuesday. With three gold medals and three world records, he has no equal in China.

In winning the 200-meter freestyle, Phelps ran his career Olympic total to nine golds and avenged his only individual loss in Athens four years ago, when a 19-year-old Phelps took on the 200 free just so he could compete with Ian Thorpe and Pieter van den Hoogenband. He touched third that night in what was called the "Race of the Century." This time, it was hardly a race at all. It was all Phelps.

Racing out of lane six, he quickly surged to the lead and led by a full body length halfway through the second of four laps. Phelps was nearly two seconds ahead of the field when he touched in 1 minute, 42.96 seconds, breaking the mark of 1:43.86 he set at last year's world championships.

"That's great," said Phelps, who was much more reserved in his celebration after a wild performance on deck the previous day. "I just wanted to be out at the 50-meter point, and that's where I was. I was in open water, and it was difficult for the other guys to see me."

South Korea's Park Tae-hwan took the silver in 1:44.85, touching while Phelps was already looking at the scoreboard. Peter Vanderkaay, one of Phelps' training partners, gave the U.S. another medal by claiming the bronze in 1:45.14.

"I knew Park is strong in the last 50 meters," Phelps said of the 400 free gold medalist, "so I knew I had to be fast and concentrated."

Everyone else knew they were racing for second.

"Phelps swam so fast," Park said. "It is my honor to compete with him."

Story continues below

Added Vanderkaay, "I just tried to swim my own race. He's going to go out, but I can't let that affect my race strategy."

Phelps is now 3-for-3 in Beijing, on course to beat Spitz's 36-year-old record of seven golds in a single Olympics. He opened with a world record in the 400 individual medley, then led off an epic victory in the 400 free relay.

Along the way, he'll take care of some other historical landmarks.

Phelps's ninth career gold tied him with Spitz, Lewis, Soviet gymnast Larysa Latynina and Finnish runner Paavo Nurmi for the most in Olympic history.

The mark isn't likely to be shared for long. Phelps will go for his fourth medal of these games and 10th overall on Wednesday in the 200 butterfly, yet another event in which he holds the world record.

It turned out to be a red, white and blue morning for the American swimmers.

Aaron Peirsol defended his Olympic title in the 100 backstroke with a world record of 52.54, and teammate Matt Grevers made it a 1-2 U.S. finish. Peirsol beat his own mark, 52.89, set at last month's national trials in Omaha, Neb., while Grevers added to the gold he won for swimming the preliminaries of the 400 free relay.

The bronze was shared by Russia's Arkady Vyatchanin and Australia's Hayden Stoeckle.

Natalie Coughlin became the first woman to repeat as champion of the 100 backstroke, winning with an American record of 58.96. She held off Kirsty Coventry of Zimbabwe, who set a world record of 58.77 in the semifinals but couldn't repeat that performance.

"It hasn't really sunk in yet," Coughlin said. "I knew when I saw the '1' by my name, because at first I thought I saw the clock wrong. It's a great feeling."

Another American, Margaret Hoelzer, took bronze in 58.34.

The U.S. dominance was broken only by Australia's Leisel Jones, who made up for a disappointing bronze four years ago by winning the 100 breaststroke in 1:05.17, just eight-hundredths off her own world record. Rebecca Soni, who only got in the event after fellow American Jessica Hardy tested positive for drugs last month, sure took advantage of her opportunity by winning the silver in 1:06.73.

Mirna Jukic of Austria got the bronze (1:07.34).

In the semifinals of the women's 200 free, Katie Hoff advanced with the second-fastest time of 1:57.01. The 19-year-old American, who's like a little sister to Phelps, is still trying to win her first gold medal after settling for bronze and silver in her first two events. She still has three more individual races, plus a relay, to make up for that void.

Slovenia's Sara Isakovic was the top qualifier at 1:56.50.

These comments are really priceless .

Just shows that despite the angry midget ie Sarko bowing to Washington , the amount of hatred towards France is relentless even on this oh-so progressive blog.

Well done to that last relayer ! he did himself and his team proud.

I agree with you completely.

Before the Olympics began there was plenty of controversy about the new swimsuits which add a questionable amount of buoyancy to swimmers. Were it not for the advantage related to their apparel, the relay team would not have won.

This is covered in an article in today's NY Times....

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/08/12/sports/olympics/12records.html?_r=1&scp=4&sq=lzr&st=cse&oref=login

The olympics always bring out the best and the worst in America.

(For example, Bush hugging beach volleyball players in bikinis while people are being slaughtered in Georgia, Iraq and Afghanistan. I thought he was giving up frivolity while we are at war.)

That team was unbelievable. I woke the whole house screaming when they pulled it out at the end. What a triumph for all of them, but especially Jason.

After the race I saw them interviewed and was struck how normal Jason, Garrett, & Cullen look, but Michael Phelps looks like a mutant! I saw on-line elsewhere that he wears 30 waist, 30 inseam pants--the same size I wear. The difference is I'm 5'4" tall he is 6'4". He has an entire foot of extra torso on him!! That and the distance from finger tip to finger tip when he stretches his arms out is 3" longer than his height. It really does take some different genetics to perform at his level!

Interesting that the anti-American, pro-French commentators neglected to mention the US team was wearing the controversial new Speedo LZR suits, which have caused records to fall all over the place, while the French were wearing their so-last-year suits from some other maker.

Any expert would tell you the French would have won by more than a hair had they been wearing the same suits.

Overall, NBC has done a good job of showing the olympics as an international event rather than an event for the rah-rah chauvinist crowd.

I give all respect to Phelps and he gave a great start, but Lezak is who pulled it together.

I don't care for Bush's politics, but I think its AWESOME that these 4 won this race with him in the stands....

He has been a constant cheerleader for our men and women there and even though they may not agree with his politics, they are PROUD to be doing so well infront of their POTUS!!!!

Put the politics aside for 2 weeks and just be PROUD TO BE AMERICANS!!!!

But who didn't invite Mark Spitz to see this? He feels dissed and I think rightly so. If he had gone, it woulda been as a random spectator. Is it 'cause he shaved off the 'stache?

Maybe, if Phelps nears the Spitz record, Speedo will fly Spitz in. Then again, maybe Spitz doesn't want his record broken. He publicly said he wasn't invited by China and wouldn't go just "as a spectator." He dissed China for not inviting him and I doubt they could give him a visa now. it sounds as if he's a cantankeous curmudgeon. Such a shame!

I had no idea there was a black guy on the team.... as a blk female.... that was extraordinary bc you don't find too many black swimmers....

WAY to go USA... we are going to rack up the gold medals....

You are 150% right. I wanted to throw my remote through the television just to get the two announcers to shut up. They didn't give team USA a chance until the last half lap. They should be slapped around a little bit.

I'd like to place an order....can I have the Phelps-Jones combo with a side of Weber-Gale and a super sized Lezak. And can you just deliver that four-pack to my house please. You can leave them in my bedroom. No dressing.

Wow....can you find four more attractive men in one place. Goodness, they need to be in water or else they would ignite.

I guess I screamed as loud as everyone else in that fourth leg! I haven't been that excited since the "Miracle on Ice" kids beat Russia. Thinking on the trash talk by the French, it occurred to me I can think of only two people who did the same and were able to back it up: Joe Namath and Muhammed Ali - you see, if you can back it up, it's not arrogance. It's pure chutzpah that is fact! Good for the USA!

Sorry to put a damper on things but you do realize what a joke all the broken world and olympic records and many of winning times/teams are in swimming during this years Olympics? I have one word for you LZR--google it. Simply put it gives certain teams an unfair advantage.
It is the technological version of steroids (it is an item that gives a noticable advantage to one person or team that is not available to all of the competitors). The fact that not once during all these 'amazing record shattering performances' do the announcers bother to mention the swimsuit is pretty interesting. Then again once we allowed professional athletes to compete, the Olympics lost any semblance of balance and sportsmanship. You might as well get rid of any restriction; age, drugs, technology, status etc. At least then we will be open about it being a competition of the haves vs. the have nots.

They talked about this throughout the trials. I mean if I held a record that was broken, I might be annoyed, but if its legal, and every swimmer in the pool is using one, how is an unfair advantage? Phelps won his first gold the other night in a normal bathing suit, even though most of the other swimmers were wearing LZR racer suits.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 11:34 AM on 08/11/2008

Every swimmer in the pool is not using one (contractual, monetary, access issues), and those that are started using them after the US already had been using/training with them. Given that the announcers aren't mentioning it all during all the record breaking performances has to tell you something [when everyone agrees it is a significant factor]. Why is a mechanical/technological advanatage different than a chemical/biological one?
[then again I guess I should just realize the fact that the Olympics far more than being a pure contect amongst athletes is little more than a corporate and nationalistic spectacle].

"extraordinary accomplishments"

I guess it depends on what you mean by this.

I think of a poor teacher or a struggling artist more than a corporate sports hero hoping for millions of dollars to sell dubious products.

For decades, and especially since 1948, at the post WWII- London games.- the Olympics are about economic and political gamesmanship and little about athletics. It seems that our guys display that arrogance that makes the rest of the world define the "Ugly American" for generations.

Our guys display arrogance??? The French said they were going to "smash" us, and the US team responded by winning. How is that arrogance?

Exactly. The French team got what they deserved. Don't hate.... congratulate !

Many anti-Americans are ideological robots who just join the crowd without any individual reflection.

France is notorious for this. They'll join in on the riot in the streets and burn cars without even knowing what they're rioting about.

That is not arrogance, that the usual pre-event banter between competitors. Now we're going to judge an entire nation on one person's comment. Typical. If the US does not appreciate being despised because of one lousy president, then they will know not to do this to others. I think the US is learning (and congrats to Mr. Phelps who won decisively without wearing one of those fancy suits). They say the suit can enhance performance by up to 2%, but I wonder how much of that improvement is a result of those wearing the suits performing better just by believing the suit works, sort of like a placebo effect. Let's face it, you could put the competition in any kind of suit, Phelps will still win. It's not about equipment, it's more about body type, training hours and psychological readiness.

How wonderfully jaded. The notion that politics are a new phenomenon in reference to the Games is silly--know why they were outlawed back in early AD? Look it up. And you would have to go far to find any Olympics more fraught with "political gamesmanship" than the 1936 ones.

The celebration our guys put on was no different from any other country's. And by me, you train constantly for years for one fabulous moment, that only in the small minority of cases will ever bring you anything but the most fleeting of fame, and you are in your 20s, well a little exuberance is not just understandable, but natural.

Perception says more about the perceiver than the perceived I think.

I watched the 4x100m race and the US team's victory celebration at pool side. Though it's understandable that a winning team would be VERY excited, that was weird, more akin to a victory dance after a wrestling match than an olympic event. That victory celebration was less than gracious, in fact it bordered on garrish. Why not simply shake the hand of the opponent after a good fight. I miss the classy old days of sports competition.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 02:23 PM on 08/11/2008

I think the response was more a combination of shock and awe than of arrogance.

If you watch the full swim, the announcers thought it was over before the last swimmers even got into the water. Then they still thought it was over after the anchors had made the turn. They were talking about the US trying to hold onto the silver. Only in the last 25 meters did the announcers start believing Lezak had a chance, and even then it would take a monumental effort.

If you didn't see the whole swim, you have to watch it to appreciate it. The replays don't do it justice.

I believe the reaction of the American team also had something to do with the excessive trash talk by the French team prior to the event. The French had stated that they would have little trouble beating the Americans and that they would "smash them" in the relay.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 03:00 PM on 08/11/2008

Maybe because the folks they just beat were quoted as saying that they were going to 'smash' the Americans. It was "why they were here".
That victory was poetry in motion and the French team's reaction was priceless.

I don't hate to be anti-French. I enjoy it! I was in England when the French denied their air space to our planes in 1985 when they were flying to Libya to avenge the attacks on our embassies. This from the country which capitulated rather than fight against Hitler! Anti-frog? You bet I am!
