United States' Michael Phelps swims to the gold as he sets a new world record in the men's 200-meter freestyle final during the swimming competitions in the National Aquatics Center at the Beijing 2008 Olympics in Beijing, Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2008. (AP Photo/Greg Baker)

BEIJING — Michael Phelps etched his name with Mark Spitz and Carl Lewis among the winningest Olympians ever Tuesday. With three gold medals and three world records, he has no equal in China.

In winning the 200-meter freestyle, Phelps ran his career Olympic total to nine golds and avenged his only individual loss in Athens four years ago, when a 19-year-old Phelps took on the 200 free just so he could compete with Ian Thorpe and Pieter van den Hoogenband. He touched third that night in what was called the "Race of the Century." This time, it was hardly a race at all. It was all Phelps.

Racing out of lane six, he quickly surged to the lead and led by a full body length halfway through the second of four laps. Phelps was nearly two seconds ahead of the field when he touched in 1 minute, 42.96 seconds, breaking the mark of 1:43.86 he set at last year's world championships.

"That's great," said Phelps, who was much more reserved in his celebration after a wild performance on deck the previous day. "I just wanted to be out at the 50-meter point, and that's where I was. I was in open water, and it was difficult for the other guys to see me."

South Korea's Park Tae-hwan took the silver in 1:44.85, touching while Phelps was already looking at the scoreboard. Peter Vanderkaay, one of Phelps' training partners, gave the U.S. another medal by claiming the bronze in 1:45.14.

"I knew Park is strong in the last 50 meters," Phelps said of the 400 free gold medalist, "so I knew I had to be fast and concentrated."

Everyone else knew they were racing for second.

"Phelps swam so fast," Park said. "It is my honor to compete with him."

Added Vanderkaay, "I just tried to swim my own race. He's going to go out, but I can't let that affect my race strategy."

Phelps is now 3-for-3 in Beijing, on course to beat Spitz's 36-year-old record of seven golds in a single Olympics. He opened with a world record in the 400 individual medley, then led off an epic victory in the 400 free relay.

Along the way, he'll take care of some other historical landmarks.

Phelps's ninth career gold tied him with Spitz, Lewis, Soviet gymnast Larysa Latynina and Finnish runner Paavo Nurmi for the most in Olympic history.

The mark isn't likely to be shared for long. Phelps will go for his fourth medal of these games and 10th overall on Wednesday in the 200 butterfly, yet another event in which he holds the world record.

It turned out to be a red, white and blue morning for the American swimmers.

Aaron Peirsol defended his Olympic title in the 100 backstroke with a world record of 52.54, and teammate Matt Grevers made it a 1-2 U.S. finish. Peirsol beat his own mark, 52.89, set at last month's national trials in Omaha, Neb., while Grevers added to the gold he won for swimming the preliminaries of the 400 free relay.

The bronze was shared by Russia's Arkady Vyatchanin and Australia's Hayden Stoeckle.

Natalie Coughlin became the first woman to repeat as champion of the 100 backstroke, winning with an American record of 58.96. She held off Kirsty Coventry of Zimbabwe, who set a world record of 58.77 in the semifinals but couldn't repeat that performance.

"It hasn't really sunk in yet," Coughlin said. "I knew when I saw the '1' by my name, because at first I thought I saw the clock wrong. It's a great feeling."

Another American, Margaret Hoelzer, took bronze in 58.34.

The U.S. dominance was broken only by Australia's Leisel Jones, who made up for a disappointing bronze four years ago by winning the 100 breaststroke in 1:05.17, just eight-hundredths off her own world record. Rebecca Soni, who only got in the event after fellow American Jessica Hardy tested positive for drugs last month, sure took advantage of her opportunity by winning the silver in 1:06.73.

Mirna Jukic of Austria got the bronze (1:07.34).

In the semifinals of the women's 200 free, Katie Hoff advanced with the second-fastest time of 1:57.01. The 19-year-old American, who's like a little sister to Phelps, is still trying to win her first gold medal after settling for bronze and silver in her first two events. She still has three more individual races, plus a relay, to make up for that void.

Slovenia's Sara Isakovic was the top qualifier at 1:56.50.

This was one of the most exciting moments in sports I have ever witnessed. The last lap was like "there is no way....there is no way...oh wait...oh wait...holy sh*t....holy sh*t...holy sh*t!!!...YES!!!!!!!!!!!!" and I jumped off the couch scaring my poor cat half to death.

My cat is still cowering under the bed. She likes to "watch" TV with me and her brother cat. When I screamed, she flew off the bed, her brother stayed put, he's too fat to jump.

Thrilling!

That was the most thrilling sports event I have in years.

Hats off to Jason Lezak, the ultimate team player, who bailed the USA out when we were trailing on the last leg.

Michael Phelps is going to win a ridiculous amount of gold medals, but this one belongs to Lezak.

During the week leading up to the race, Alain Bernard, the French swimming star said "We will crush the Americans... that's why we are here."

Adding to the drama, the Americans and the French were in lanes 4 and 5 respectively. You couldn't have set this up any better with a script.

Any coach of any sport would love to have a team full of Jason Lezaks: someone who may not get the top headlines, but who gives his all and comes through when the team needs him most. I am in awe of what I saw last night.

Congrats to the US Swim team, "The Chlorine Crew" for your Gold Medal and for your WORLD RECORD in the 4x100 Men's Relay.

USA, USA, USA !!

What's irritating is that this article is titled with the name Phelps. The very first word in both paragraphs one and two is Phelps. Now I like Mike. But, this was a team effort. What's more is that Phelps isn't the star of this race; anchorman Lezak was. As a competitve swimmer myself, I think NBC (and all other media) needs to give the limelite to some of the other swimmers as well. I'm sick of everything being somehow linked to Phelps and his quest for gold.

Agreed, Phelps is starting to get on my nerves. I hope he takes it all, but we have put him on such a high pedistle that if he falls, it will really hurt.

Methinks Mr. Phelps is just suffering from temporary fat-headedness. But he seems like a good guy and when his balloon lands, he'll be back to normal.

Yeah I see what your saying, and if you check out the real sports sites like ESPN they are giving Lezak the credit that is due. I think that sites like HP are just putting info out that the casual observer would want to know, and that is if Phelps still has the chance to get 8 gold medals.

Don't know if anyone caught Costas interviewing Gov. bush. He said that he didn't think the US had any problems. Guess he's back to you-are-doing-a-great-job-Brownie mode. He claims God told him to be POTUS. I wonder if he told him to do it with his head up his ***.

Arianna, why isn't your Olympics coverage really highlighting how messed up Beijing is (security, propaganda, major news outlets agreeing to lie)?

Just to acknowledge the quality of the teams competing in the event, the top 5 teams all beat the previous world record. Must be frustrating to beat the world record and come in 5th! Still, something all 5 of the teams can be proud of.

If he could only hold up the American Flag properly

And when B Costas mentioned things weren't so great in the ole U S of A, he responded that nothing was wrong, everything is fine. (paraphrasing)

I'm glad I didn't smash my TV or I would have missed the 4x4 relay.

I lost a bet. I bet that Bush would say something incredibly stupid before the end of the interview with Costas, but he didn't. Mildly stupid didn't qualify, it had to be incredibly stupid. It was worth losing my ten bucks just to see Bush get through five minutes of airtime without dropping a stupid bomb. History in the making I say.

Can we please have coverage of the Olympics without having to see President Bush there and have him get asked inane things by the NBC commentator? Not everything in the world needs a comment from George Bush Jr or a talking head from the media.

That was easily in the top 10 greatest sports moments of the last 50 years. I jumped of my sofa, tripped over my blanket, landed on the floor, briefly wondered if a sprained my ankle, jumped back up and started cheering. My poor poor neighbors.

I know the whole anti-France thing is a bit played out after the freedom fry crowd ruined it, but admit it, who doesn't enjoy watching the Americans kick the frenchies' tails? Especially after they were talking so much smack. Take that France!

No way someone makes up that distance, that freaking dude closed 1/2 a body length on a 6'6 guy in the lase 20-30 meters, simply amazing, I was going crazy.

I live in Des Moines, IA home of Shawn Johnson, it is simply madness around here right now.

She was simply amazing on the balancing beam last night. The US team had a few rough patches but they came thru alright. Lets hope they can build on this and move on.

They really need to look closely at team China, there is no way on earth that those girls are 16 years old. They look like 12 to 14
