United States' Michael Phelps swims to the gold as he sets a new world record in the men's 200-meter freestyle final during the swimming competitions in the National Aquatics Center at the Beijing 2008 Olympics in Beijing, Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2008. (AP Photo/Greg Baker)

BEIJING — Michael Phelps etched his name with Mark Spitz and Carl Lewis among the winningest Olympians ever Tuesday. With three gold medals and three world records, he has no equal in China.

In winning the 200-meter freestyle, Phelps ran his career Olympic total to nine golds and avenged his only individual loss in Athens four years ago, when a 19-year-old Phelps took on the 200 free just so he could compete with Ian Thorpe and Pieter van den Hoogenband. He touched third that night in what was called the "Race of the Century." This time, it was hardly a race at all. It was all Phelps.

Racing out of lane six, he quickly surged to the lead and led by a full body length halfway through the second of four laps. Phelps was nearly two seconds ahead of the field when he touched in 1 minute, 42.96 seconds, breaking the mark of 1:43.86 he set at last year's world championships.

"That's great," said Phelps, who was much more reserved in his celebration after a wild performance on deck the previous day. "I just wanted to be out at the 50-meter point, and that's where I was. I was in open water, and it was difficult for the other guys to see me."

South Korea's Park Tae-hwan took the silver in 1:44.85, touching while Phelps was already looking at the scoreboard. Peter Vanderkaay, one of Phelps' training partners, gave the U.S. another medal by claiming the bronze in 1:45.14.

"I knew Park is strong in the last 50 meters," Phelps said of the 400 free gold medalist, "so I knew I had to be fast and concentrated."

Everyone else knew they were racing for second.

"Phelps swam so fast," Park said. "It is my honor to compete with him."

Added Vanderkaay, "I just tried to swim my own race. He's going to go out, but I can't let that affect my race strategy."

Phelps is now 3-for-3 in Beijing, on course to beat Spitz's 36-year-old record of seven golds in a single Olympics. He opened with a world record in the 400 individual medley, then led off an epic victory in the 400 free relay.

Along the way, he'll take care of some other historical landmarks.

Phelps's ninth career gold tied him with Spitz, Lewis, Soviet gymnast Larysa Latynina and Finnish runner Paavo Nurmi for the most in Olympic history.

The mark isn't likely to be shared for long. Phelps will go for his fourth medal of these games and 10th overall on Wednesday in the 200 butterfly, yet another event in which he holds the world record.

It turned out to be a red, white and blue morning for the American swimmers.

Aaron Peirsol defended his Olympic title in the 100 backstroke with a world record of 52.54, and teammate Matt Grevers made it a 1-2 U.S. finish. Peirsol beat his own mark, 52.89, set at last month's national trials in Omaha, Neb., while Grevers added to the gold he won for swimming the preliminaries of the 400 free relay.

The bronze was shared by Russia's Arkady Vyatchanin and Australia's Hayden Stoeckle.

Natalie Coughlin became the first woman to repeat as champion of the 100 backstroke, winning with an American record of 58.96. She held off Kirsty Coventry of Zimbabwe, who set a world record of 58.77 in the semifinals but couldn't repeat that performance.

"It hasn't really sunk in yet," Coughlin said. "I knew when I saw the '1' by my name, because at first I thought I saw the clock wrong. It's a great feeling."

Another American, Margaret Hoelzer, took bronze in 58.34.

The U.S. dominance was broken only by Australia's Leisel Jones, who made up for a disappointing bronze four years ago by winning the 100 breaststroke in 1:05.17, just eight-hundredths off her own world record. Rebecca Soni, who only got in the event after fellow American Jessica Hardy tested positive for drugs last month, sure took advantage of her opportunity by winning the silver in 1:06.73.

Mirna Jukic of Austria got the bronze (1:07.34).

In the semifinals of the women's 200 free, Katie Hoff advanced with the second-fastest time of 1:57.01. The 19-year-old American, who's like a little sister to Phelps, is still trying to win her first gold medal after settling for bronze and silver in her first two events. She still has three more individual races, plus a relay, to make up for that void.

Slovenia's Sara Isakovic was the top qualifier at 1:56.50.

saying the time to say.. " We french are not sore losers like you americans." is in fact behaving like sore losers and it was a Frenchman who said you would "smash" the "Americans." I didn't know the French were the sort to boast like that. :)

1. Don't talk trash if you cannot back it up
2. Don't sulk like a cry baby once you do get beaten
3. Never and I mean never call anyone a sore loser especially after you got spanked in an event you were supposed to win.

Avoir, better luck next time.

French 101:
'Au revoir' means goodbye

'Avoir' means to have

Never, and I mean never, attempt to use another language in a post if you don't actually know what you're saying.

When I watched Alain Bernard's comment, I thought that was a joke filled with empty bluff. I did not expect French swimmers that good. But I admit that they were very close - in fact they were beating US swimmers until that last second. Good work France for giving the Team US a memorable competition.

I agree with you. Why do we have to be so negative?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 05:00 AM on 08/11/2008

Ismael, there is no negativity in the comment. This is a byproduct of what your swimmer said before the race. There was no reason for him to make that comment. Maybe next time he'll learn to shut up and finish the race.

The greatest race ever. I was a swimmer when I was younger. And let me tell you, that was one amazing come back. It's very hard to come back from a full body length ahead or a half body length that Alain Bernard had over Lezak. Especially in a short distance. That was simply amazing. This race will go down as one of the greatest races in Olympic history.

I forgot to mention that I was on my feet, heart racing the whole time and my adrenaline was pumping. It took a full 2 hours to settle down after that race.

I love the Olympic games, but swimming heats are the most exciting to me.

I saw the results and reactions online before it came on TV. So I had to see this race. It was some of the best TV viewing I've seen in ages! I particularly liked how one of the commentators kept saying through most of the race that there was no way the Americans could win this race. Then in the last couple seconds they just barely pulled ahead and won. I thought the Olympics had passed their time and had become a thing of the past. But this Olympics has been quite captivating. I even think it turned out to be a great move to select China as the host nation. What a friendly, sporty host. http://mespace.wordpress.com

Well macintoshsauce, I think the French in Quebec don't really need to add anything to what you just said, you pretty much make the case for them. Maybe they're just pompous with you because of your attitude. In Paris, I heard Americans complaining about being ignored by the French. My experience was completely different. Maybe it's not tourists they despise, just people who go around complaining about everything French.

I am actually kind of disappointed that Phelps got all the headlines, when he actually swam the 3rd slowest of the 4, when you look at the times. He owes Lezac his firstborn (okay so I'm exaggerating).

The guy who swam France's 3rd leg was amazing, half a second faster than Phelps... I had thought the guy who swam our 3rd leg must've been slow, but when I looked at the time he was actually almost the same time as Phelps, its just that the French guy (Bousquet?) was killer... in the end, Lezac is the real hero of this whole thing, and deserves the headlines. I mean that last leg just took my breath away.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 01:22 AM on 08/11/2008

Maybe if you knew anything about relay swimming you would understand that leadoff swimmers (as Phelps was) start from a regular start while the second through fourth swimmers start in motion. This is a huge difference and the first leg is typically the slowest leg of the four swimmers on this relay. Phelps "specialty" is not the 100 free, so while he certainly is not going to be one of the fastest in that race, the fact the guy is third fastest on a team that shattered a world record simply builds on his legend while exposing the viewer to something truly extraordinary in what Lezak did tonight. If you're disappointed by anything or anyone watching that race, then you need to have your eyes and head checked 'cause you're loco.

Lezak's swim, is by far, the best I've seen in 38 years competing or watching speed swimming and Phelps stamina to compete in so many races over such a short timeframe is awe-inspiring.

Congratulations to each guy on that team. They really rock!

Well the media will always gravitate towards the big dog of the team and that happens to be Phelps at this moment. However, I do agree with you that Lezac was the one who anchored this team to the win without him they would have finished for a silver.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 06:40 AM on 08/11/2008

I think he lauded Lezac well enough in the post race interview. He gave credit to where it was due. The whole team was pretty congratulatory.

This has to be the best sports moment I have ever seen. Before the race even started, the announcers were downplaying the chances of the U.S. During Lezak's jump into the water, the announcer was saying how impossible it would be for the American to catch the French world record holder. Then three fourths of the way across the pool everything change. Lezak caught Bernard's wave and road it all the way into victory. The best replay video is of Bernard looking over in shock as Lezak swam right next to him.

We here in America needed this pump of patriotic adrenaline. This is an event all Americans can be proud of. In the face of insults, the U.S. won a battle with honor, grace, and skill.

That was an amazing race! I never watch sports at all, I actually only had the Olympics on because nothing else was on TV... and I jumped out of my chair onto the floor! But Lezak really deserves credit for this; he was amazing. Phelps did a great job too, but all of the headlines make it look like he won it for the team when it was really Lezak.

This race was incredible to watch. I'm so glad they pulled it out and put the French in their place. But it also made me like Michael Phelps even more. He was so gracious - sure it puts him on track to win 8 golds, but he was one of four and made it clear he was part of a team. A truly classy guy.

BTW, did anyone see W. in the stands? What was up with the blotches on his elbow? Ewwwww.
