Rain Prayer

"Deus, dona mihi serenitatem accipere res quae non possum mutare, fortitudinem mutare res quae possum, atque sapientiam differentiam cognoscere." These words form what is commonly known as the "Serenity Prayer," roughly translated by Alcoholic Anonymous founder William Griffith Wilson as "God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference." Contrast that with the recent ministrations from pseudo-Christians-run-amok cabal Focus On The Family, who recently ran a web ad calling for people to ask God to rain out Barack Obama's DNC address, scheduled to take place at Denver's Invesco Field.

[WATCH.]

Shorter Stuart Shepard: "God, I lack the stones to face the things I cannot change, so I hope you have the courage to deliver unto me a juvenile dick move on behalf of an American political party, which I will have the wisdom to fatuously grandstand on after the fact."

Focus On The Family would be well advised to undertake a little study of the Christian liturgy, particularly Matthew 6, which specifically informs against this sort of nonsense: "And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward (Matthew 6:5)." The video also violates the admonition offered by Matthew 6:6: "But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking."

According to Radar, this web ad has since been pulled. Which is too bad, because I was hoping to see these fools do their little rain dance.

Asking God to bring ill fortune upon another is the highest blasphemy.

“The Christian god can easily be pictured as virtually the same god as the many ancient gods of past civilizations. The Christian god is a three headed monster, cruel, vengeful and capricious. If one wishes to know more of this raging, three headed beast-like god, one only needs to look at the calibre of people who say they serve him. They are always of two classes: fools and hypocrites.” - Thomas Jefferson

Excellent quote, where does it come from? Can you cite the speech or writing?
I would very much like to use it, but have found many quotes attributed to our founders to be hard to substantiate.

So now they're doing a rain dance?
What's next? Will they ask that their followers begin to fatten up lambs for an October surprize sacrifice?
Maybe suggest that both candidates be thrown into a lake to see which one floats?

I understand that the one that floats is the one possessed by the devil.

Right wing Christians are always, uh, so Christian. I thought Christians were supposed to have positive thoughts and love their neighbors and their enemies alike. These evangelical churches of what's happening now are such travesties.

I would like to take this opportunity to point out the fact that Evangelicals are NOT Christians. Christianity is based on love and tolerance. Evangelicals preach prosperity and partisanship. We need to be clear about the distinction here.

I would like to take this opportunity to point out the fact that Evangelicals *are* Christians. One of the most convenient aspects of religion is that you get to make it up as you go along. Invisible guys don't make very good referees.

I'll bet if you ask an Evangelical he/she believes they are Christian.......

And I'll wager that you believe yourself to be intelligent. It's obvious though that belief and fact are two different things.

I wouldn't dare put my prayers on Youtube, the Secret Service would be knocking on my door.

No, praying would not be wrong, just a waste of time. Religion is a gateway drug.

Yep....I've heard that there is a drought in Colorado anyway, this can't be all bad.

More water for the Colorado River which has been running low anyway.

The cool thing would be that it actually rained, and Obama supporters just sit and enjoy the blessings from above. lol

I repeat...

Where is this man's conviction? I'm not as "wishy-washy" about my prayers. Every night I pray for the plagues of Egypt to be poured out upon the Republican Convention in Minneapolis...and for "Republican-leaning" states (except for NC, my home state) to be swallowed into the depths of the sea before election day.

But, I have to ask, "is it really so wrong?"

I guess mine doesn't appear as harmless because it's not camouflaged under the pretense of "traditional American family values" or the assumption that Jesus is a Republican.
