Rain Prayer

"Deus, dona mihi serenitatem accipere res quae non possum mutare, fortitudinem mutare res quae possum, atque sapientiam differentiam cognoscere." These words form what is commonly known as the "Serenity Prayer," roughly translated by Alcoholic Anonymous founder William Griffith Wilson as "God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference." Contrast that with the recent ministrations from pseudo-Christians-run-amok cabal Focus On The Family, who recently ran a web ad calling for people to ask God to rain out Barack Obama's DNC address, scheduled to take place at Denver's Invesco Field.

[WATCH.]

Shorter Stuart Shepard: "God, I lack the stones to face the things I cannot change, so I hope you have the courage to deliver unto me a juvenile dick move on behalf of an American political party, which I will have the wisdom to fatuously grandstand on after the fact."

Focus On The Family would be well advised to undertake a little study of the Christian liturgy, particularly Matthew 6, which specifically informs against this sort of nonsense: "And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward (Matthew 6:5)." The video also violates the admonition offered by Matthew 6:6: "But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking."

According to Radar, this web ad has since been pulled. Which is too bad, because I was hoping to see these fools do their little rain dance.

Let's assume that god, if there is one, has other things on his or her mind that day.

The notion of praying for rain so that someone else may have misfortune is incredibly unchristian.

Heck, the entire fascistic "Christian" right is incredibly unchristian. These vile people carry a chip on their shoulder the size of a redwood because they imagine themselves to be 'righteous'.

Not to mention completely dumb. What exactly would be accomplished if it rained on Denver? Does he think people will change their votes because it rained on Obama's speech?

What an idiot.

That's right. Jesus worked for Ex xon, and held fund raisers for the republican party. He drove a hummer and lived on a gated plantation to keep the rif raf out. When not busy pushing corporate interests, he tried to find time to watch Fox News to keep up on the latest scum trying to get something productive out of thier tax money.

The word "liberal" derives from the Latin liber ("free, not slave"). It is widely associated with the word "liberty" and the concept of freedom. Livy's History of Rome from Its Foundation describes the struggles for freedom between the plebeian and patrician classes. Marcus Aurelius in his Meditations writes about "...the idea of a polity administered with regard to equal rights and equal freedom of speech...

Here in Colorado we often see bumper stickers that read:

'Focus On Your Own Damn Family"

Unfortunately the sheep in that cult only listen to the demagogue Dobson.

And people wonder why Christianity is getting a bad reputation.
Is this behavior any different than the Taliban or Muslim fundalmentalists?

Well, that's how "make believe" works!
Why would one fantasize about things they don't want?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 10:16 AM on 08/13/2008

Pathetic, but not surprising.... these zealots will stop at nothing...
It is true, they are really a western version of the Taliban...
One can only hope there will come a day when America has a leadership with the motivation to put these evangelicals in their place.. there are ways to shut them down... a good start would be to tax their asses off..... These views really have no place in a 21st century reality......

Focus on the Family - What a fine example of why we need to overhaul our public education system. Un-American, un-patriotic, bigoted ignorant misogynsts. It will be a happier America when the media stop giving these people the podium and microphone and treating them as if they speak for the majority of Christians in this country. Trust me, they don't.

I am constantly reminded by ludicrous outbursts like this that the "moral majority" is and was neither moral...or a majority. They were just effective at producing outrageous propaganda that the less observant, less informed or actual party members of their "lunatic fringe" believed.

Nazi Germany was not filled with a population of Nazi Party members and this "brand" of Anti-Christian Christianity is NOT shared by the members of the majority of Conservative Christians.

I received from my cousin in Florida one of those email chains claiming that the very popular columnist, Maureen Dowd, wrote an article (which was faked according to her and three other sources) claiming some nonsense about Obama getting funding from the Muslim World. I called it on him telling that it was a fake article disseminated to the mentally challenged who never "fact check". He returned with a raving attack against Obama claiming, again falsely, that he was not a Christian and he was a Marxist.

He failed to admit that he broke one of his religion's commandments about "Bearing False Witness" in trying to smear Obama. He must have the set of Commandments with those pesky asterisks which Karl Rove used!

I guess I would like to hear from all those Republican or Christian Conservatives out there who do think for themselves and ask their opinions.

Well, I lived in desolate Denver for 10 long, miserable, DRY years. Spoke with my friend there yesterday. It only rains 10 inches a year there, and nothing but verga all summer. Verga is rain that doesn't hit the ground. It's a dry, ugly place the front range, and there having a DROUGHT this year. No rain at all. So this guy would have to be very powerful, and he's not.
Focus on the family is a joke in Denver, but very real in Colorado Springs along with the Air Force Academy.
Really, the front rage is the ugliest place I've ever seen. That's why I moved to glorious Portland, Oregon.
All the polls you guys see that says Oregon LEANS Obama, ha, try and find someone voting for McSame, good luck to you. Our GOP Senator Gordon Smith is still talking about working with O, still. And he's the chair in Oregon for the McSame campaign, how really embarrassing. Good luck to Dobson who has been replaced and no one cares what he thinks any longer.

As a current resident of Colorado I'd say your "ugliest place I've ever seen" comment is just plain ridiculous. It is one of the most beautiful places I have seen and I feel lucky to live here. Since we are one of the fastest growing places in the country, I guess more people agree with my view than yours.

We have been in the driest year ever, but we have finally tapped into our monsoon flow, so we are getting a decent amount of scattered showers now in the afternoon. But they are quick hitters, and usually over in a few minutes. Evening showers are REALLY rare, though we have had a couple recently. My guess is that the weather will be typical Colorado, where we average 300 days of sunshine a year.

Pretty weird to slam Denver like that over this weirdo's comments. Dry is nice, the front range of the Rockies is very beautiful. Low humidity equals cool crisp mornings even when later in the day it will be 90. Which may explain why Denver is consistently thinner than the rest of the country. It is always exercise weather if you time it right. We don't miss you and your dreary, drippy mindset.

Actually, the best thing would be to wish for a bridge or two to collapse (without anyone getting hurt - but a close call) to highlight the infrastructural issues that our opponents don't think we can afford to fix. We can spend a fortune on Iraq, but we cannot afford to fix our infrastructure, schools, or health care systems... Makes sense, eh?
