Rain Prayer

"Deus, dona mihi serenitatem accipere res quae non possum mutare, fortitudinem mutare res quae possum, atque sapientiam differentiam cognoscere." These words form what is commonly known as the "Serenity Prayer," roughly translated by Alcoholic Anonymous founder William Griffith Wilson as "God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference." Contrast that with the recent ministrations from pseudo-Christians-run-amok cabal Focus On The Family, who recently ran a web ad calling for people to ask God to rain out Barack Obama's DNC address, scheduled to take place at Denver's Invesco Field.

[WATCH.]

Shorter Stuart Shepard: "God, I lack the stones to face the things I cannot change, so I hope you have the courage to deliver unto me a juvenile dick move on behalf of an American political party, which I will have the wisdom to fatuously grandstand on after the fact."

Focus On The Family would be well advised to undertake a little study of the Christian liturgy, particularly Matthew 6, which specifically informs against this sort of nonsense: "And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward (Matthew 6:5)." The video also violates the admonition offered by Matthew 6:6: "But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking."

According to Radar, this web ad has since been pulled. Which is too bad, because I was hoping to see these fools do their little rain dance.

I know god, he's not that kinda guy, he would never use nature to affect a political event, and the fact that your asking him to, is really pissing him off!!! so be careful, you dont know what or who your messing with, but if you keep clowning you will be hearing from him shortly!!!

The real fact is that this is exactly the Christian way for America for the past 400 years. Creating fear, hate, intolerance, bigotry, greed, racism has worked well to unite Christians against everybody. Greed seems to be the only family value of the Republican Chrisitian Nazi party of the US of A.
Since all religon is fiction to begin with, people like this can and will say and do anything in the name of a fictional God that never existed.
It is frightening to know that humanity has never left the stone ages!

Cars? Why settle for the car ... go for the house ... go for the house. Do you have any idea how rich SOME of these "christians" live (especially the "pastors"), 3 or 4 bedrooms, pools, 2 car garages, jacuzzis, dream kitchens, living rooms filled with the latest state-of-the-art entertainment units available, every room with a TV and PC ...

It's a well known fact that on the average most "christians" live far above their means, with little to give to the poor or those in need. Scripture demands that they live humble and simple lives ... but then again these are the "I read my Bible everyday crowd". Any given Sunday go to a church parking lot and see how many SUVs are parked outside.

“I do not find in orthodox Christianity one redeeming feature.” - Thomas Jefferson

The assumption here of course is that rain is bad, but I digress before I begin. If these fellow travellers of the Lord can pull this off I'm ready to believe. Especially if they can manage to direct the Almighty to rain just on the stadium where Obama will be speaking. Failing that, who knows, maybe they can learn something from the Chinese and start shooting at clouds to give the Lord a helping hand. Freedom of religion and guns? What can possibly go wrong. On the other hand, aren't parts of the southwest undergoing extensive drought? So after the Denver flood, would it be too much to ask those who sitteth on the right hand of the Lord (they would rather stand than sit on the left) to show this region some love? And while they're at it, there's also a little place called the Sahara that would benefit from a shout out to the Lord for some humidity.

We could use that rain in Florida. Do you think that Denver would FedEx it to us?

Time to get all these politically active religious groups to pay taxes, lots of taxes. About time for them to contribute to social programs that would help the needy. NOW

Let's start with corporate welfare. If you love fascism, get your buddies together, if you have any, and start your own country. Then you can privatize profits and socialize losses, give no bid contracts, eliminate voting and all human rights, laws, accountability, regulation etc etc. Hope you enjoy it but it is not the American system of government. Of, by, and for the people, not corporations. Now run along and get your Mc Same points.

There are places in this country and around the world that are experiencing severe drought and it's putting a big hurt on many people. People are losing their crops, their land, and more than a few are starving to death.

If they want to pray for rain, and want to be real, actual Christians, then let them pray for rain to help those people out.

These people are not christians. Christians do not pray for pain against another.

This is the problem. Apparently they do. Christianity has a history of imperialism, violence, and the suppression of knowledge and free thinking. And the most dangerous potential for being manipulated by wedge issues. Again I say, LET THEM PAY TAXES, or fine them heavily for political involvement.
