Rain Prayer

"Deus, dona mihi serenitatem accipere res quae non possum mutare, fortitudinem mutare res quae possum, atque sapientiam differentiam cognoscere." These words form what is commonly known as the "Serenity Prayer," roughly translated by Alcoholic Anonymous founder William Griffith Wilson as "God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference." Contrast that with the recent ministrations from pseudo-Christians-run-amok cabal Focus On The Family, who recently ran a web ad calling for people to ask God to rain out Barack Obama's DNC address, scheduled to take place at Denver's Invesco Field.

[WATCH.]

Shorter Stuart Shepard: "God, I lack the stones to face the things I cannot change, so I hope you have the courage to deliver unto me a juvenile dick move on behalf of an American political party, which I will have the wisdom to fatuously grandstand on after the fact."

Focus On The Family would be well advised to undertake a little study of the Christian liturgy, particularly Matthew 6, which specifically informs against this sort of nonsense: "And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward (Matthew 6:5)." The video also violates the admonition offered by Matthew 6:6: "But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking."

According to Radar, this web ad has since been pulled. Which is too bad, because I was hoping to see these fools do their little rain dance.

It could rain buckets...and the stadium would still be filled with supporters.

Is it right to pray for the ruination of America? And how is it these people do not see how far away they are from the teachings of Christ? It is so sick.

This race marks the beginning of the end of Focus on the Family.

Large Christian evangelical organizations usually start into decline when they go into politics. It isn't immediate, but the decline is certain erosion. Politicos don't see this because they don't realize just how large this organizations are before they get into politics. But all of them decline when they become political. Focus on the Family has certainly been involved in issues before but has stayed mostly out of candidate races. This sort of partisan politics undermines the very charter of such an organization - that it is spiritual and part of God's work.

You start rendering under Ceasar and you become that which is of Ceasar.

Anybody from Colorado that can explain how your otherwise-nice state came to be ground zero for fundamentalist wackjobs?

You figured it out. It is not G-d they pray to. It is someone else.

As a Secular Humanist I believe this individual is free to exercise his belief in the supernatural. As a human, I am embarrassed for our entire species when I hear garbage like this.... fake humility, smarmy and mean-spirited comments requesting that this buffoon's chosen entity smite his enemy with the forces of nature..... this guy needs not only an education but a smack in the back of his pointy little head.

No gods in my government - no proselytizers on my porch.

I think there just might be a very special place in Hell for people who invoke the name of the Lord for selfish or evil purposes.

That is another point of religious doctrine that pisses me off. "There is a special place in hell", in other words don't bother with them here on earth because god will get them in the afterlife. Pure BS.
No gods, No masters.

True, along with the concept of forgiveness, a license to sin. If we all thought this was the one life we had, we might all work a little harder to coexist while we are here.

I believe religion to be a personal belief system and realize very few, if any, people share exactly the same beliefs. While I do believe in (my version of) the concept of hell, to infer that life here on earth takes a backseat is absurd.

These folks offer proof positive that there is no god. If they REALLY believed in god & heaven & hell then they wouldn't violate his principles with every waking breath. The bible is a moral compass & religion is offered as a control mechanism for the masses - an "opiate" if you will. Those with money & power have no need for morality - they just need more money & power.

If god & heaven & hell do exist then I will derive GREAT pleasure in watching them all fry from my front row seat in hades.

“You never see animals going through the absurd and often horrible fooleries of magic and religion. Dogs do not ritually urinate in the hope of persuading heaven to do the same and send down rain. Asses do not bray a liturgy to cloudless skies. Nor do cats attempt, by abstinence from cat's meat, to wheedle the feline spirits into benevolence. Only man behaves with such gratuitous folly. It is the price he has to pay for being intelligent but not, as yet, quite intelligent enough.”-Aldous Huxley

Dear God,
There are a good many people here in America, like these Focus on the Family chimpanzees, who use your name to carry on their filthy divisive ways here in America!
Is there any way you could start the Rapture tomorrow so we adults can be rid of these vile, Evangelical Fundementalcase children?

Oh, I see...you don't want to have anything to do with them either...we understand!
Amen!

Well put. I doubt he/she would vote republican. Seems to me greed, pride, gluttony, wrath etc are cardinal sins, and the best words to describe the agenda of the republican party.
