Rain Prayer

"Deus, dona mihi serenitatem accipere res quae non possum mutare, fortitudinem mutare res quae possum, atque sapientiam differentiam cognoscere." These words form what is commonly known as the "Serenity Prayer," roughly translated by Alcoholic Anonymous founder William Griffith Wilson as "God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference." Contrast that with the recent ministrations from pseudo-Christians-run-amok cabal Focus On The Family, who recently ran a web ad calling for people to ask God to rain out Barack Obama's DNC address, scheduled to take place at Denver's Invesco Field.

[WATCH.]

Shorter Stuart Shepard: "God, I lack the stones to face the things I cannot change, so I hope you have the courage to deliver unto me a juvenile dick move on behalf of an American political party, which I will have the wisdom to fatuously grandstand on after the fact."

Focus On The Family would be well advised to undertake a little study of the Christian liturgy, particularly Matthew 6, which specifically informs against this sort of nonsense: "And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward (Matthew 6:5)." The video also violates the admonition offered by Matthew 6:6: "But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking."

According to Radar, this web ad has since been pulled. Which is too bad, because I was hoping to see these fools do their little rain dance.

Indeed. The coldest winter I ever spent was August in Denver.

An option for you would be to pray for a HilRod miracle, but God (R) isn't listening anyway.

It is best to read the weather forecast before praying for rain. ~Mark Twain

Yet another inappropriate gesture in the name of God.

will you be praying to our lord and saviour to make it rain - in darfur as well as denver?

or is that asking for too much....

if it rains we'll put on our slickers...and we'll hope it's raining in darfur as well.

pray hard.

please.

Your god has to be begged (prayer) to stop killing people through drought and famine? Hmmmm..

You bet they pulled it--the last thing they want is for their bile and malice to show through. Their image-control team will have to be more careful about vetting their propaganda in the future.

They're not christians. They are liars, charlatans and hypocrites masquerading as human beings.

They *are* christians.
Their interpretation of supernatural idiocy is as valid as anyone else's.

Some food for thought from Robert A. Baker: "What happens when the same number of people pray for something as pray against it? How does God decide whose prayer to answer? Does the total number of people praying for or against something matter? How about the righteousness of the supplicants? Are positive prayers answered more frequently than negative ones? Does God take the positive ones and Satan the negative? Does the intensity of the praying have any effect on the outcome? Does the length of time one devotes to praying have any effect on the frequency with which one's prayers are answered? Do the words and phrases used in the prayer -- either positive or negative -- have any bearing on the success rate? Does the nature of the thing or things prayed for have any bearing on the prayer's success rate -- either positive or negative prayers? Why or why not??" Easy to answer. Prayer does not work. There is no god.

How silly. If it does rain, Obama will simply part the clouds and the rain will fall on either side of the stadium--hopefully just on the faux Christians in Focus On The Family.

This whole thing is so very sad, on so many levels. Do these fruitcakes think that people who are so desperate to save our nation, and the world, would let a little rain stop them? If we can sit in the rain and snow to watch two football teams battle it out, we can watch a convention in a rainshower.

Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord in vain.

Christians should not be supporting conservatives. They support white supremacy, war, prejudice, filthy politics etc.

It's a very old practice, but it's generally associated with sorcery and black magic. The Judeo-Christian God doesn't usually go in for that sort of thing. Perhaps these people should start worshiping Satan or Cthulhu.

You know... that's a very interesting and accurate point. Maybe Obama should use that in his next add. This church leader and I use the word "church" with suspect should be called out for promoting withcraft and socrcery (intentionally trying to invoke a curse).. But then that would really stir up the religious nut jobs
