Rain Prayer

"Deus, dona mihi serenitatem accipere res quae non possum mutare, fortitudinem mutare res quae possum, atque sapientiam differentiam cognoscere." These words form what is commonly known as the "Serenity Prayer," roughly translated by Alcoholic Anonymous founder William Griffith Wilson as "God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference." Contrast that with the recent ministrations from pseudo-Christians-run-amok cabal Focus On The Family, who recently ran a web ad calling for people to ask God to rain out Barack Obama's DNC address, scheduled to take place at Denver's Invesco Field.

[WATCH.]

Shorter Stuart Shepard: "God, I lack the stones to face the things I cannot change, so I hope you have the courage to deliver unto me a juvenile dick move on behalf of an American political party, which I will have the wisdom to fatuously grandstand on after the fact."

Focus On The Family would be well advised to undertake a little study of the Christian liturgy, particularly Matthew 6, which specifically informs against this sort of nonsense: "And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward (Matthew 6:5)." The video also violates the admonition offered by Matthew 6:6: "But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking."

According to Radar, this web ad has since been pulled. Which is too bad, because I was hoping to see these fools do their little rain dance.

You just have to laugh. If everyone just started laughing at them they would be rendered powerless.

Just more proof that Focus on the Family is not a Christian Organization, and that none of the churches or people affiliated with it are Christian.

Only Satanists pray for mischief.

Well,,, it is clear that Focus on the Family seems to forget,,, the Pro-Abortion stances and voting record of McCain. Lets not talk about his adultery, the elephant in the room. His complicity with the North Vietnamese. Forgiven all, should he see and admit his error.

I don’t favor ablution either,, rather,, I support education, protection (Contraception), open adoption, information and parental involvement.

I do despise these proven Hypocrites, (76% of all abortion, upper middle class whites.) from Christian standing.

I do not think it in my power or nor should it be,, to strap a child down to an ALTER of my faith for 9 Months. When is it in our purview to now assume Judgment on others? To criminalize her. To traumatize her yet further, possibly for LIFE? Simply put, “Not mine to judge.”

Are my sins any less? Should I minimize my transgressions, my trespass of my life, judged less than another, they in greater condemnation?

I think these people should check McCains voting record and stance on Abortion,,, before they pray for Rain.

They may be surprised.

All the best

Don't muddle his record by trying to claim that his anti-contraception votes are actually pro-abortion votes. There are already a stunningly large number of people that believe he is pro-choice despite having one of the most stunningly pro-life voting records in the Senate.

Jason,
How about
Matthew 7
21 Not everyone who says to Me, "Lord, Lord," shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven.
22 Many will say to Me in that day, "Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?"
23 And then I will declare to them, "I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness."

It can definitely be tough trying to reason with this kind of thinking. I live in the same city as FOTF and New Life. A few years ago I was having trouble understanding how a few of my "better Christian than me" friends could rationalize praying ferverently for their young adult children's love interests to "go away." (Their way of disapproving.) I discussed it briefly with my own young adult son, who happened to be a missionary at the time. I loved his comment:

Praying FOR something or someone is of Christ. Praying AGAINST someone is witch craft.

Would that God would smite these false prophets (or at least wither them) for the sins they purport to do "in his name."

I just keep thinking: "Many will say to me on that day 'Lord, Lord, have we not done many good works in your name?' And I will say, 'Depart from me, you who are [catch this word] LAWLESS.'"

I'm tellin' ya, if there's any truth to the whole Christian thing (and I'm sort of betting there is), these guys and their like are going to be the ones in the biggest trouble.

If as you said, 'if there's any truth in this Christian thing' is in fact true, there's going to be a special corner in hell reserved just for people like this.

Bill Mahr said it best saying the Republican party says " We have God and you don't ". They need to be worried if God has them.

If these nuts would read the New Testament they might see where Jesus said give to Ceasar what's his or don't worry about the splinter in your neighbor's eye but the pole in yours or how I like to put it your head up your... well, you know.

Maybe they should stop all this crap and focus on their own family.

It's a bluff. God stopped taking their calls a long time ago (and there are rumblings of another spate of child-molestation charges... She knows how to play hardball).

These people are nothing more than a bizarre Christian sect / cult. Authentic, traditional Christianity would not ally itself with the GOP. Nor would it ally itself with any party, unless, perhaps, there existed a Christian party whose sole platform was Christianity. Such an entity does not presently exist in the US.

I would like to see traditional Christianity make a statement denouncing these blasphemists.

I think the fact that these people are off on their own jaunt, not in the company of traditional Christianity, tells the story. Nothing needs to be said. The fact, for example, that Orthodox Christianity - or Catholic Christianity - do not join the Focus on the Family bandwagon, speaks for itself.

The one comes pretty close:

".......Constitution Party in its work to restore our government to its Constitutional limits and our law to its Biblical foundations"

I looked at their website. The Constitution Party's agenda is largely political and has little to do with carrying out the precepts of Christianity, such as feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, opposing murder, stealing, etc.

Progressives, please note - this is not representative of Christians, or people of faith in general! This was really bad judgement on the part of a right-wing extremist organization. I dismiss them and their "prayers" on this matter, and so should you.

Nothing to see here...

Thanks for your thought-free reply. My best guess (since your post was pretty vague and also resorted to unnecessary name-calling) is that you're describing another example of people claiming faith to justify bad behavior? If so, I've already said I'm against that. Whatever your beef is, keep your bad-mouthing to yourself. I've never been a "shameless apologist" for anything, and never will.
