Rain Prayer

"Deus, dona mihi serenitatem accipere res quae non possum mutare, fortitudinem mutare res quae possum, atque sapientiam differentiam cognoscere." These words form what is commonly known as the "Serenity Prayer," roughly translated by Alcoholic Anonymous founder William Griffith Wilson as "God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference." Contrast that with the recent ministrations from pseudo-Christians-run-amok cabal Focus On The Family, who recently ran a web ad calling for people to ask God to rain out Barack Obama's DNC address, scheduled to take place at Denver's Invesco Field.

[WATCH.]

Shorter Stuart Shepard: "God, I lack the stones to face the things I cannot change, so I hope you have the courage to deliver unto me a juvenile dick move on behalf of an American political party, which I will have the wisdom to fatuously grandstand on after the fact."

Focus On The Family would be well advised to undertake a little study of the Christian liturgy, particularly Matthew 6, which specifically informs against this sort of nonsense: "And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward (Matthew 6:5)." The video also violates the admonition offered by Matthew 6:6: "But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking."

According to Radar, this web ad has since been pulled. Which is too bad, because I was hoping to see these fools do their little rain dance.

All this energy going to waste. Why don't they pray for an end to the Iraq war, or the war in Afghanistan or genocide in Darfur, Aids, global warming, poverty................

If he truly believes prayer can shape the weather, wouldn't he prioritize drought-stricken areas where people are suffering (rather than a sophomoric prank)?

Isn't that kind of like using your super-powers to piss off one neighbor instead of help another? (Actually, it's not "kind of like"... it is just like that).

God is still in control. The hole they are trying to dig will be the pit they fall in. God will not be mocked.

GOD will not be mocked. Be very careful about that.

Then Focus on the Family and crowd should stop mocking god, and while there at it the should stop with pretending that he/she/it is somehow on the side of the Repugnican Party!

I suspect the following are all examples of how the GOP can still claim the title of "the party of Christian family values:"

http://www.armchairsubversive.org

Yeah, real "Christian family values" those GOP partisans.... just like the locals in THE HILLS HAVE EYES.

Hypocrisy, thy name be GOP... or is that "Gang of Pedophiles" or "Greedy Old Perverts?"

Yeeeach.

I give him style points, but I must say I'm not as "wishy-washy" about my prayers. Every night the wife and I pray for the plagues of Egypt to be poured out upon the Republican Convention in Minneapolis...and for "Republican-leaning" states (except for NC, my home state) to be swallowed into the depths of the sea before election day.

But, I have to ask, "is it really so wrong?"

I guess mine doesn't appear as harmless because it's not camouflaged under the pretense of "traditional American family values" or the assumption that Jesus is a Republican.

Hahahaha!!!

You go Soxy!!!

Yes, I just offered a Prayer for clear skies, myself. Still no answer. Just faith,, I guess.

I suppose we will just have to wait and see.

Controlling the weather??

Much like controlling Voting Machines. Soxy,, you know,, I wonder how many extra Democrats needed to Vote,,, just to combat the effect of Voter Tampering in 2006?

Funny though, we know that the Government has been working on weather modification for decades.

Humm??

Odd,,,,, that FOTF would be soooo specific with a date????

Well, I think we will see.

Al that is left is to watch.

“And there shall be great battles in the heavens, evil against good.”

Well my GOSH!

All the best

The world would be much better off without religious extremists like these people. I can't believe they have the nerve to call themselves Christians.

my question is...why are people following these nuts? why? what purpose if this is the way God's work is to be done then I don't won't any part in it. I thought God only did what was good? The religious right really walks a fine line with politics and religion. Maybe they should rethink why they are the leaders of the flock.

Hey, if you really think there is an old man with a long white beard walking around in the clouds then go ahead and pray if it makes you feel better.

Pathetic. Simply pathetic. It's people like this who give Christianity a bad name. The shortest verse in the Bible sums it up best: "Jesus wept".

I believe it was "It is finished", which was preceded by something along the line of "and Christ said" within the same verse. As a recovering Southern Baptist, the thing about "Jesus wept" being the shortest verse in the Bible is branded into my mind from all those games of Bible Trivia we played during those rip-roaring youth group weekend parties. Of course I could be proven wrong and experience a crisis of faith, in which case my resulting eternal damnation will be on your head. Thanks a lot, Diogenis! ;-)
