I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Mccain As Pilot

The New York Times carried a correction today for an August 9 story that essentially revises a key component of John McCain's military career -- that he was a "fighter pilot":

An article on Sunday about Senator John McCain's campaign management style described his role as a Navy pilot in Vietnam incorrectly. He flew bombing missions as an attack aircraft pilot, but he was not a "fighter pilot." (The error has appeared in numerous other Times articles the past dozen years, most recently on April 9 and on Dec. 15, 2007.)

It would seem like an important matter, given the fact that the paper of record was going so far to cop to a decade-long litany of error. But it appears that the Times is really splitting a hair here. Providing the vital "More Than You Ever Wanted To Know About Fighter Planes" research today is Gawker's Ryan Tate, who reckons the Times needs to be told, "Negative Ghostrider, the pattern is full of tortured reasoning!"

When McCain was famously shot down over Vietnam, he was flying his usual plane, a small jet aircraft known as the A-4 Skyhawk, which the Times now refers to as an "attack aircraft." That's a safe and widely-agreed upon label for the plane pilots dubbed "Scooter" (heh), but the newspaper needn't have apologized for calling it a "fighter." Many in the aviation community regard it as precisely that, starting with the military's most famous training program, Top Gun.

Top Gun, the nickname for the Navy fighter pilot school made famous in the Tom Cruise movie of the same name, originally used the A-4 to simulate Russian MiGs. The key attribute for a "fighter," according to widely recognized definitions, is high speed and maneuverability and weapons designed to shoot down enemy aircraft.

...

All versions of the aircraft can carry Sidewinder air-to-air missiles for self defense, according to Bill Gunston and Mike Spick's excellent "Modern Air Combat." And they often did, for example in the service of the Israeli Air Force, where an A-4 shot down a Syrian MiG-17 during the Yom Kippur war. Boom, fighter!

Tate goes on to point out that while the A-4's purpose is often interpreted as an "attack bomber," at least one authoritative source, The World's Great Attack Aircraft, "refers to the plane as a 'versatile little fighter-bomber.'"

Naturally, I have to wonder why the Times is committing themselves to a wordy future of referring to McCain as "an attack aircraft pilot who flew bombing missions" when their audience is not primarily made up of military experts and "fighter pilot" is a simple and accurate enough way of describing McCain's military service. In keeping with the need to correct decade-long assumptions (and the Top Gun theme in general!), the Times might be better advised to reconsider whether it's accurate to call McCain a "maverick."

At some point, I hope the public at large will start to demand the same kind of scrutiny for McCain, that has been heaped upon Obama. Also we need to demand that they take the same care to correct mistakes and lies that have been told about Obama. They sure go out of there way to make it easy for McCain to fumble, bumble and lie his way through this campaign, while dissecting everything about Obama. All this talk about the public not really knowing Obama is bologna. We know more about him than we do about McCain. John Mcain has been very crafty in his self-biography. You would think he did not exist until he was shot down in Vietnam because he never talks about anything other than that. Also the big black-out that exists in the years after he was released. Those years when he met Cindy and left his long-suffering wife and children. More recently the continued reference to him being a maverick is laughable. He sides with George Bush and his party over 90% of the time. That is anything but being a Maverick.

McCain’s reputation as a war hero rests on the sum total of 20 hours in combat.

All repube 'heroes', since Ike, have be myths concocted to bamboozle the public.

Those who can, do. Those who can't, become repubes.

That's actually a lot of hours of combat, especially for a pilot. I wouldn't call the guy a hero but we won't be doing ourselves any favors trying to scoff at his military service. That said, I wonder how he sleeps at night given the way he votes against our modern service people.

So I guess that being held prisoner does not qualify under your rationale? Being tortured and having your arms and shoulders broken is not enough to qualify for a war hero? Being offered the chance to leave and deciding instead to stay with your fellow soldiers makes him dirt?

Let me see, did Obama ever serve in uniform? HMMM, that would be no.

If that is your definition. There are scores of bigger 'heroes', that have NEVER been mentioned.

The story is about being a pilot not a POW. Try and stay up with the group.

The correct term is Naval Aviator.

It's a navy thing.

It's called "setting the record straight."

I've heard that John McCain gave up intelligence....How does that make him a war hero?? Aren't the war heroes the guys that died rather than give up intelligence while under captivity. I want to be wrong about this. Can someone on the McCain side tell me what happened while he was in captivity. No, because he has sealed all the records. If he had his arms broke and his shoulder broke, that is awful but he still shouldn't have given up any intelligence...no matter what they did to him. Sorry, that is the oath you must uphold as an American soldier. Agree or disagree?

I just Love it when McNutJob says that He Would rather lose the Election not the War , Well I have News for Him. He has in the Past Already Lost a War & a Presidential Election. Someone might want to Remind Him of this Fact.

It seems Jason that you're confusing descriptions of the aircraft with descriptions of the pilot. The A-4 Skyhawk might be a good 'fighter' aircraft, but if it's being used by the pilot to make bombing runs, that doesn't necessarily make the pilot a "fighter pilot". I could drive a race car to work, does that make me a race car driver?

Could you then infer that McDoink's military career was served ace backwards?

Don't they ground you after losing three planes and consequently about $100 million worth of taxpaper money?

Forget the airframe.

Was McCain ever engaged in air-to-air combat?

Was McCain ever engaged in bombing missions?

Simple.

In the meantime, Mc was just attempting to speak at a Town Hall mgt. in York, PA, about Georgia ... Ha, he says he's known Saakashvili for many years .... but butchered the man's name!!? He gives the audience the same lifted Wikipedia simple history.

Anyway, Mc goes on to announce that Georgia is a "christian" nation!!!!?? This too is the pronouncement of these neo's crusades ... religious conflicts!! He says Georgia is a "tiny" democracy ... and, astoundingly says we "rely" on the oil out of the Caspian Sea!!!!

Naval pilot ... fighter pilot ... the flips are incredible ... the truth is Mc is no "maverick" he's a pathetic fraud and a Bu$h/Cheney off-spring.

Don't we already have another fighter pilot residing in the WH now? While the NYT worries about splitting hairs over a title, what about all of the pages of McCain's military files that are missing? Will the public ever be privy to that? Must be something pretty bad for it to be left omitted. The same goes for his medical record. Someone is making sure that anything pertaining to John McCain undergoes as little scrutiny as possible.

Where are the missing 583 pages out of his 600 page( approx. 97%) military report? It has to be real tough to maintain the straight talk express moniker when very little of what you are making available to the public is relective of honest reporting.

...and you are kidding to think his military factual history deserves NOT full scrutiny for there are indeed purposeful ommisions . (funny thing regarding the Rather /CBS falderal, the basics of the "report" were on the mark..the hingepin of that particular document and the ability to BLAME "liberal" bias won that one in perception for many. GWB did NOT have a great military career, did reeive special "treatment" all along the way and its like their claimed education degrees, these two take PRIDE in being bottom of class --yeah, George got those "Gentlemen" C's, but those were legacy C's as well as deserved not even those..great role models folks, true champs at having the best spinmeisters to take care of details such as actual facts and truths...its all about what CAN BE presented, no matter if true/factual, perception is what counts !!!)
