LOS ANGELES — "Tropic Thunder" is pushing the boundaries of good taste too far for groups representing the mentally disabled.

Dozens of people from organizations such as the Special Olympics and the American Association of People with Disabilities protested the movie-industry spoof across the street from the film's Los Angeles premiere at Mann's Bruin Theatre on Monday. The protesters held up signs with slogans such as "Call me by my name, not by my label" and chanted phrases like "Ban the movie, ban the word."

"I think it's open to interpretation and that's the great thing," Robert Downey Jr., who stars in the film, told AP Television at the Monday night premiere. "You know, if I want to protest something because it offends me that's my right as an American, and it's also any artist's right to say and do whatever they wanna do."

The groups are outraged over scenes featuring the liberal usage of a disparaging term used to describe the mentally disabled. In the movie, director and co-star Ben Stiller plays a fame-hungry actor cast in a war movie who previously had a role as a mentally disabled character named Simple Jack.

"When I heard about it, I felt really hurt inside," said Special Olympics global messenger Dustin Plunkett. "I cannot believe a writer could write something like that. It's the not the way that we want to be portrayed. We have feelings. We don't like the word 'retard.' We are people."

Andrew J. Imparato, president of the American Association of People with Disabilities, said he and other advocacy groups met with DreamWorks co-chair Stacey Snider and watched a private screening of the film Monday morning. Imparato called the movie "tasteless" and said it was "offensive start to finish."

"I have a sense of humor," said Imparato. "There were parts of the movie where I laughed, but it seems to me that the movie tried really hard to go too far and then pull back on everything that was offensive except the issue of people with intellectual disabilities. I just think Ben Stiller and the people involved in this movie just didn't think it was going to be offensive."

Following the original complaints from the advocacy groups, DreamWorks pulled some promotional materials, including a Web site that promoted the film-within-a-film starring Stiller's character which contained the tag line "Once there was a retard." DreamWorks spokesman Chip Sullivan previously said in a statement that "no changes or cuts to the film will be made."

"If you want to pick on people, as the old playground saying goes, pick on people your own size," said Timothy Shriver, chairman of the Special Olympics, who is calling for a boycott of "Tropic Thunder" along with the other groups. "This population struggles too much with the basics to have to struggle against Hollywood. We're sending a message that this hate speech is no longer acceptable."

I have a mental illness and receive federal Canadian disability assistance. I don't discriminate - if the situation dictates, I call all of my friends, whether disabled or abled, retards, douches and other pejoratives that would make the unctuous salty James Lipton of Inside The Actors Studio blush. The point is I can't relate to the protesters. For a much needed refreshing change, Hwood should attempt reviving the Thin Man genre - intelligent, sophisticated, witty, easy on the nerves:

Nick Charles: The important thing is the rhythm! Always have rhythm in your shaking. Now a Manhattan you shake to fox-trot time, a Bronx to two-step time, a dry martini you always shake to waltz time.

It's a stupid movie. Doesn't justify censoring it.

How can anyone not see that this is a jab at the "sincere" actors who grab for the Oscar by playing retarded characters? How can you not see that it's a jab AT insensitivity? You'd have to be retarded not to understand that.

This country is ENTIRELY TOO FRICKIN' SENSITIVE.

Besides - the movie is making fun of the ACTORS who portray the handicapped to win awards, not those who are actually disabled.

exactly when did this country lose it's sense of humor? i mean my god, P.C.-ism has gone way to far.

1. if your overweight . . .your fat.
2. if your "height challenged" . . .your short. and vice versa.
3. and if your mentally challenged or whatever . . guess what, your retarded. don't sugarcoat it people. putting all this emphasis on being "P.C." is just making everythig tat much frustrating.

call it what is is, not what it should be.

If you use bad grammar or even the wrong dang word for things, what does that make you, stupid?

You used the word 'your' which is a possessive term (my grammar is better than YOUR grammar) when you mean 'you're', a contraction of you and are. If you are (you're) overweight, you are (you're) fat, for instance.

By all means, don't consider the feelings of people who are handicapped and are marginalized by society anyway. You must be Republican...I "call it what it is, not what it should be."

Does it mean much if the "mentally disabled" picket?

It's not a put down, it's just going to give the movie more publicity than it deserves, albeit negative publicity, but publicity no less.

People with intellectual disabilities struggle daily for the liberties most of us take for granted. When people use the "R" word in a negative way, it reinforces the stereotype that people with ID are second class citizens; making it more difficult, if not impossible, for them to live fully integrated lives in their communities. It wasn't that long ago that doctors recommended that parents of children with ID send them to institutions and forget that they were ever born. Although progress has been made, people with ID and their families still struggle for everything that we take for granted: having your own home, making your own decisions about how you want to spend your days, having a family, having a jog, getting around.

Think about it. How often do you use the "R" word and never give it a second thought? I used to until 10 years ago when someone explained to me how hurtful it was to people with disabilities. It's no different than the "N" word. It's all about opression.

Yeah. Many people with ID were picked on as they grew up. It is very difficult to instill a sense of pride into a human being who has no support system to protect them from such abuse. All people have the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

I understand not being PC all the time, but people should always come first. Especially when they really depend upon the support they receive from others.

People! There are lots of hissy-fit bitch-slap blogs around where you can go insult people and other bloggers and posters to your heart's content. I hope HuffPo doesn't turn into one. It certainly didn't start out that way. Let's get civil, please. Kissy Kissy!!

Is "intellectual challenged" any LESS offensive than retarded?

Let's face it, they mean the same thing.

Of course "retarded" is more offensive.

It could be argued that the n-word "means the same thing" as "African American" or "black." But most of us refrain from using the n-word because we know the impact it has on people.

I don't suppose these people realize that they look like something out of an Ali G skit when they do this kind of public protest.

Some 'injustices' just can't be remedied.

If you don't like it, don't see it. It will probably flop anyway- stupid movies usually do.

This out of control PC vein in progressive politics leaves me cold. Almost makes me want to see the movie just to spite you hypersensitive PC'ers.

Have you seen most Jim Carrey, Ben Stiller, Seth Rogan, Will Farrell, Vince Vaughn movies?
And to the other whiner about not having mental or physical handicapped people in their families, my family runs the range from autism to OD deaths to suicide and there is no sacred cows. Grow a sense of humor.

Funny how those think this is ok are those without mentally or physically handicapped people in their families. Hey, why not a movie mocking those with breast cancer? Wow, you even get to use the word "breast".

Show me a man who knows what's funny, and I'll show you a man who knows what's not. This is not. Free speech and humor are wonderful. Bullying isn't.

What are you basing this claim on?! I have a mentally and physically handicapped person in my family, and I think the premise this movie is great - they're not mocking the handicapped, they're mocking the mockers of the handicapped and Hollywood's protrayal of the handicapped. It's called satire.

What I find disturbing is the people telling the mentally challenged individuals to be hurt by this and to protest it in the first place.

How, pray tell, is this bullying? We'll ignore the part about how you have no idea what you're talking about with respect to this movie and just skip to that explanation.
