LOS ANGELES — "Tropic Thunder" is pushing the boundaries of good taste too far for groups representing the mentally disabled.

Dozens of people from organizations such as the Special Olympics and the American Association of People with Disabilities protested the movie-industry spoof across the street from the film's Los Angeles premiere at Mann's Bruin Theatre on Monday. The protesters held up signs with slogans such as "Call me by my name, not by my label" and chanted phrases like "Ban the movie, ban the word."

"I think it's open to interpretation and that's the great thing," Robert Downey Jr., who stars in the film, told AP Television at the Monday night premiere. "You know, if I want to protest something because it offends me that's my right as an American, and it's also any artist's right to say and do whatever they wanna do."

The groups are outraged over scenes featuring the liberal usage of a disparaging term used to describe the mentally disabled. In the movie, director and co-star Ben Stiller plays a fame-hungry actor cast in a war movie who previously had a role as a mentally disabled character named Simple Jack.

"When I heard about it, I felt really hurt inside," said Special Olympics global messenger Dustin Plunkett. "I cannot believe a writer could write something like that. It's the not the way that we want to be portrayed. We have feelings. We don't like the word 'retard.' We are people."

Andrew J. Imparato, president of the American Association of People with Disabilities, said he and other advocacy groups met with DreamWorks co-chair Stacey Snider and watched a private screening of the film Monday morning. Imparato called the movie "tasteless" and said it was "offensive start to finish."

"I have a sense of humor," said Imparato. "There were parts of the movie where I laughed, but it seems to me that the movie tried really hard to go too far and then pull back on everything that was offensive except the issue of people with intellectual disabilities. I just think Ben Stiller and the people involved in this movie just didn't think it was going to be offensive."

Following the original complaints from the advocacy groups, DreamWorks pulled some promotional materials, including a Web site that promoted the film-within-a-film starring Stiller's character which contained the tag line "Once there was a retard." DreamWorks spokesman Chip Sullivan previously said in a statement that "no changes or cuts to the film will be made."

"If you want to pick on people, as the old playground saying goes, pick on people your own size," said Timothy Shriver, chairman of the Special Olympics, who is calling for a boycott of "Tropic Thunder" along with the other groups. "This population struggles too much with the basics to have to struggle against Hollywood. We're sending a message that this hate speech is no longer acceptable."

Tropic Thunder does not make fun of the mentally disabled, it makes fun of self-important Hollywood types who create exaggerated mentally disabled characters for use as Oscar bait.

And similarly, the point of Downey's character is not to make fun of black people, it's to make fun of the idea that there white actors who think they are so great that they can portray a black person better than a black person could.

It's a satire ripping on the way Hollywood uses and perpetuates stereotypes.

Thank you Kyuzo for your insightful comment. The mental disability groups are perhaps more interested in exposure than truth in this world of sound bites.

Wasn't Stiller mocking people who refer to the mentally disabled as "retards"?

The rub is this. There are people who do not understand satire and so it will perpetuate stereotypes for those people.

The only reason that that would be a problem is if people want to neuter "arts", and im using that term extremely loosely, because some idiots don't get it. Why force everyone to make content comprehendible to the lowest common denominator?

This is unbelievable....how is it that the retarded groups got out to protest before the NAACP?? The movie is a comedy, and if you are offended, then here's a novel idea that's completely American-----don't go see it!!!.....I am so tired of the crybabies out there. These people have the same rights to make this movie, as they have the rights to protest it. Can't they find something better to do? I would be much more offended by the lies being spewed by Bush and Mr. McCain......

Apparently these people forgot about the PMRC and Tipper Gore with their Parental Advisory Explicit Lyrics sticker. Each one of those stickers back in the day, helped sell even more copies. This is free press for the film.

I haven't seen this movie so have no opinion about whether it is offensive or funny (if it's any good it'll be a little of both) but this protest is not going to keep people in this films target demographic away and will probably make them want to see it more.

I still agree with Carlos Mencia on this issue. The only people who can legitimately be offended by this are people with mental retardation, and if they have the intellectual capacity to actually BE offended then they probably aren't actually retarded. I mean seriously, these folks need to unclench their butts for a bit and relax. I use a wheelchair because of a spinal cord injury, but I don't get all offended at gimp jokes because most of them are pretty funny.

I don't see the NAACP calling for a boycott of the film because there's a white guy (Downey Jr) essentially in blackface.

I agree. There are all kinds of jokes in films and TV shows about "older" women who are a little overweight, forgetful, etc (is it hot in here or is it just me?) I am a member of that group and I find it hilarious. The Seven Dwarfs of Menopause: itchy, bitchy, sweaty, sleepy, bloated, forgetful and psycho

:)

It's OK to laugh at ourselves, folks.

This protest was undoubtedly organised by those without metal defficiencies in order to protect those whose perceptions are controlled by the world around them. In much the same way as it's a crime to denigrate children by bringing them into the world of adult pornography, we should protect these adult children from some other adult's cyncal view of them. Some people may consider them acceptable targets for humor just as some people will see children as objects for their lusts. We should not forget they feel hurt as children do, just as we should remember they can perceive love more openly as well. Why would we choose to denigrate them to satisfy our elitest need for satire? Why shouldn't we protect them from our stupidity? Like children are off limits as subjects for certain genres, I believe those more vulnerable should be offered our protection, not our ridicule.

The people being ridiculed in the film are the actors who use the mentally challenged or minority issues to gain 'cred'. Way to miss the point.

Oh, I see, so they are just being used as props for smart people to talk about to reveal how smart they aren't. That clears up a lot. The attention being brought to the film by the protestors is to expose the direction our insensitivity is heading. So, what? Do you think we should just tell them to get over being offended by the termonolgy that offends them, because we're smarter than they are, and we control the dialogue, and their sensibilities don't matter as much as ours. I personally think insensitivity should be ridiculed at all times, as it merits no protection from whomever seeks to attack it.

That's great and all but the movie is making fun of hollywood not mentally handicapped people.

I'm not sure how we can "protect them from our stupidity"... ?

Shouldn't we try to protect ourselves from our stupidity, first?

And doesn't the fact that we are stupid, pretty much rule out protecting anyone from said stupidity?

I just can't figure it out. I'm so stupid!

Hey! But didn't YOU just call me stupid? I would like an apology, please, before I picket your stupid comment.
