It's going to happen whether you like it or not.
A lot of things are going to happen that we wont like.

All the talk in the world is not going to change anything,
and from where i stand on the planet it only appears to be getting worse.

Like a wise penguin once said,
Just smile and wave boy, smile and wave.

So much for freedom ... when your movements are being tracked and monitored that's the same as controlling you. The New World Order is using the fear of terrorism to install these measure across the globe ... this is just the beginning ... 911 was carried out by the elite shadow money interests that are moving on the great chess board to lock down the globe into a prison planet .... next phase is demanding your papers where ever you go and getting rid of paper money so they can control all money exchanges. The National ID card is just the beginning.

So why would the NYPD do something like this? Obviously isn't anything related to terrorism, or else the Fox News article would have been screaming that. Face it, the NYPD are cowards.

Shocked nobody called me out for my comment, so I'll explain anyways. I don't see where the 4,000+ American soldiers are glorified on ballcaps and t-shirts. Yet the NYPD spits on their memory by doing the most un-American thing imaginable, spying on Americans. And to think lots of soldiers/veterans fought/died so that we could live in a just America, free from spying that other countries do, or the police brutality you see in other countries, or the "police state" mentality, or loss of freedoms, arrested and treated as guilty before having a day in court. But now, they dishonor the memory of all soldiers/veterans, by doing exactly what we fought so many wars to prevent.

Is this like that Pink Panther movie where "police are conducting a house-to-house search of Lugash.."?

"Land of the Free" my arse!

You should all go re-watch "The Siege" w/Bruce Willis and Denzel Washington

And then think about what it means to take "our" freedoms away - we lose - not the terrorists (or lack thereof) - we lose - US not them!

Privacy issues aside, I think the true danger is the fact that our government, on all levels has a fascination with technological remedies to combat crime or terror. Tech fixes to security issues provide a false sense of security, they look good, sound good, have pretty price tags, but they are superficial.

AT MOST what they will do is allow law enforcement some material to review AFTER an incident occurs. Do you really think they are going to cross reference hundreds of thousands of license plates EACH DAY with various watch lists? What then, send police out to investigate every dirty or missing or out of date plate? What happens if a suspect rents a car, takes a bus, hitches a ride, steals a car?

All those pictures of the London bombers....produced pretty pictures for the press. They were already being surveilled through other means, the camera's seemed to have provided no practical intelligence to prevent the bombings. Should make a lot of people FEEL safer perhaps.

Well said.

But concerning the privacy issue, we should remember what James Madison said, that it is proper to take alarm at the first intrusions on our liberties, as once you acquiesce to the principle that the ends always justify the means, and that government officials should just be trusted to do the right thing, especially when it's only a minor intrusion, soon the means become far more than just a minor intrusion, and your own government can no longer be trusted, as openness assures honest government, lack of oversight virtually assures the opposite.

This particular proposal may have merit, and should be examined further, as solid police work and high quality intelligence are the most effective ways to fight crime, including acts of terrorism. But the process must be well thought out, logical, open to civil oversight, aimed only at public safety (and not allowed to morph and mission creep to general law enforcement and creepy snooping on ex-girl friends, personal enemies, etc.).

We can't prevail against those who hate our freedoms by giving up our freedoms.

And we don't want the NYPD morphing into the East German Stasi, where every citizen was always a potential suspect, always under suspecion and surveillance, and half of the population was enlisted by the police to spy on their own families, police would literally hide in your attack to listen "just in case" etc.

Freedom is not for the faint of heart, but it sure beats the alternatives.

Privacy is a big issue for me but in the case of NYC, I think this is reasonable.

The first time I visited the World Trade Center (1994 I think) I was shocked that people could come and go freely. I really believed that every person should be identified--coming and going.

Sure. No problem.

Because we all know that the NYPD would never abuse their power.

And people can only come and go freely in a free society.

We wouldn't want that.

We should do what we did in Bagdad. Build concrete barriors every few feet to wall off each block. Set up check points every mile. Bring a taste of the Middle East home for everyone to enjoy.

Uh-huh!

There going to fit each car with a transponder and track you where ever you go. But it isn't going to stop at the NYC city limits. BB will be able to track you ANYWHERE! He'll just send out a little RF signal and ping the transponder and poof, he knows exactly where you're at and who you're with.

Only way to be anonymous is to go completely off the grid.
