Apple

As Steve Jobs would say, "BOOM." Apple has eclipsed Google in market value. Apple's current market cap: $159.37 billion. Google's: $157.56 billion. Not that we didn't see this coming. Indeed, Valleywag predicted it back in November of 2007. "Apple knows how to design not just gadgets, but the businesses that go around them," the blog noted. "And as a result, we wouldn't be surprised if Apple is worth more than Google within two years."

Make that two years or less.

These are two brilliant companies. I love the ITunes/Ipod bit but wouldn't have a Mac computer. I think the Google crowd revolutionized search engines. Hats off to both.

Well at least Apple makes physical things and sells things for cash. Google is essentially an advertising company.

And what's wrong with that more power to then! Hey you know what else when you have no physical product to ship market and sell the profit margins tend to me much better. I call that smart business.

The problem is the advertising is clogging the web. Instead of keeping technology ahead of the curve, we are falling behind. Color print advertising has us strangling in garbage and internet advertising has bogged down our internet.
I was there when we built arpanet and I'm not so sure I like what it has become. I wish there were a better way to capture the real essence of the internet and to make it available to everyone, regardless of location or cost.

hi im a pc, and i usually suck

hi im a mac, i rock and im grossly overpriced

the choices we make... after my $2300 macbookpro died (15 months after i bought it) i built myself a desktop with double the ram, 5 times the hardrive space, and a faster core2duo processer than the mac. for $500. Choose wisely, id opened a computer once or twice before i built my machine and it was really easy to do.

I always felt that that somebody should add a NEO like character from the matrix behind these two Borg! With a few lines like: "I am the Alpha and the Omega the beginning and the end. I am Linux and I am in control! Did I mention that am free?"

Yeah too bad the majority of hardware manufactures do not support linux ie my cannon pixima mp160 on any linux distro I have tested not to mention it is basically trying to be windows at this point and has alot of catching up to do especially in the area of media sharing and home automation the Media center PC with media center extenders is truely the most cost effective and awsome experince for multi room audio and video Linux is light years behind in this regaurd. Also even in the most recent distro's of Ubuntu, PCLInux and Fedora they feel oh so........... can you say windows 98!!!!!!! I think open source is awsome myself as a programmer but dude for the average joe not so cool and come on really there in no comparisson to Windows at this point Do not even bring up the virus or hackabillity thing. Because for every persone that works to break in Linux systems there are 10,000 trying to break into Win systems so what do you think would happen if all that cannon fire came the LInux way. Just ask jobs from what I am hearing apple is coming under fire like crazy lately to boot there havent been many new virusus effecting pc's in a wile.

Steve Jobs most definitely has the Midas touch! I have worked for a few of the top cellphone manufacturers and can attest that most of functions of the iPhone have been in existence for at least 5 years if not longer. But to package it so beautifully, and sprinkle some star dust on it, well only Steve Jobs could do it!

Thats fairy dust Kahill work for boys and girls but not MEN I mean sure in high schools and some college campuses particularly art schools but come on how many execs or professional techies do you really see with one. Notice how the media is neglecting to report the general economic news to the public. We don't seem to be getting ANY information about the REAL economic climate in America. They just breezily report a gas price and a foreclosure rate, and then go on to more titillating political news. No word about how REAL people are suffering under the Republican Bush policies. One state has no idea what's going on in another unless they know people living there. We have no idea about what's going on except in the vaguest of terms. Why is that? Unless you routinely peruse economic publications, we all have NO IDEA what's going on nationwide. Isn't it the job of the media to keep us informed?? What's happening in Nevada, that has the highest foreclosure rate in the country--how is it affecting other businesses?

Hey, Media, you're dropping the ball again for another election where the peoples' interests are going to be overlooked. What's the deal there??

The media is owned by Global Corporations.

Their sole responsibility is to the stockholder, all members of the Global Monied Elite.

What did you think, that they were the fourth estate?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 07:56 PM on 08/14/2008

Nyla the reason people are suffering is the price of gas, food medicine and so on and so on. What does Bush have to do with that ???? Could you please tell me???? Because the reason for economic hurt is the high price of oil plain and simple this high price of oil makes gas expensive and it all snowballs from there. I was even talking to a Doctor who told me how the high cost of fuel is driving up the price hospitals pay for everyting even organs and tissues used in transplant surgeries which drives up costs for everyone. This same example was evidenced to me when talking to a local pizza shop who had to stop delivery services because of the cost of fuel he had to pass the cost on to someone and at that cost no one wanted delivery anymore. Groceries same reason, tires same reason did you know it takes 8 qts of oil average to make one tire.? So direct youre anger at our congress people with their unwillingness to go after domestic energy and its for poitical reasons on the left they will wait till after the pres election so far left enviro peeps dont have a cow and on the right they do not want to hold a vote because it's the only card Mccain has to play. See the congress is where you need to look for answers

"What does Bush have to do with that ???? Could you please tell me????"

Absolutely I could (and will) tell you.

Bush and his VP very specifically chose to embark on a path for this nation in which conservation was considered a bad word that is used by weaklings and anti-capitalists. We have wasted the last 7+ years during which the US could have created an entire sector of the economy that was based upon lowering our dependence on oil.

Then there is the war of choice in the oil rich part of the world that Bush, mostly on his own, started. This has impacted both actual oil output and (more importantly) speculation about future oil output.

It takes some serious denial to think that Bush does not bear a fundamental responsibility for both the price of oil and the economic fallout in the US from the price of Oil.

So? Apple's been around 30 years. Google about 10. It should be worth more.

Not to mention, the iphone has been out a while now, and Google hasn't yet come out with the Android, which is gonna blow the iphone out of the water. What's the big deal?

Wouldn't it be interesting if Steve Jobs opened his own university teaching the next generation of American business leaders? Instead of Harvard or Yale. How much has education, as represented by MBA's, contributed to the decline of America business leadership?

That's a sound bit of business observation... just don't tell MicroSoft or any of the old school companies it passed in market cap (GM, Ford, IBM, Xerox... I could go on)

PS Apple's Newton was clumsy, but a miles stone. Jobs never gave up on the idea, and that is what the iPhone really is- the successor to the Newton

Opinion. Newton was milestone. Another opinion. Apple booted Steve-O to the curb and practically destroyed themselves. Next Computing.

I think it is deserved. Apple makes well designed products with value and superb marketing that they are able to build customer loyalty and charge a premium price.

Google gives away things for free with the hope of earning money from attaching advertizing to them.

apple kicks ass and their marketing is spot on, but the last word i would use to describe their product is value, you pay out the arse for anything apple. I got screwed on a $2300 laptop that died and then built a much more powerful desktop for about 1/4 the money.

My niece was making $4,000 per month from Google during the summer while she was still a undergraduate. Now at Google full time, the company serves breakfast, lunch and dinner and expects its employees to practically live on its campus. It provides for 15 minute naps during business hours and electric cars to its employees to take to go to appointments while at work. I suggested to my sister that Google was not promoting family values by encouraging all its employees to eat all their meals at work and she said, in support of her daughter, that eating together is not necessary to have a good family. Well to me, and I do envy her income at such an early age, but to me it seems like she's been swallowed by the machine, which is what I said to my sister. I don't Google anyway. I don't think its business model will stand the test of time; in my opinion small, decentralized and humanized businesses are the future. Meanwhile, I mainly use Yahoo.

Google is having a blast spending wildly and having fun, while they are making the bucks.
The owners enjoy watching their own success help other people. Their campus is salt and peppered with people of all races and everyone seems to be ignited with excitement. What is right is for the individual to decide. Ask any/all employees at Google and they will say....This is a blast. I hope it lasts.

Ever heard the term "Microsoft Millionaire"?

It applies to all big tech companies. You sign your life away for 7 years to the company, and then you're set for life afterwards. All techies know this when we go into the field for a company like Google. It's the price we pay, and it's a fair trade.

"Family values" has nothing to do with it. Welcome to the 21st century. Glad you could join us.

If you substituted "market cap" for "value" in the headline it would be more nearly accurate.

Of course, neither is anywhere near their all-time high. If you bought GOOG 12 months ago, you're actually slightly underwater. And AAPL is more than 10% below its January high.
