Apple

As Steve Jobs would say, "BOOM." Apple has eclipsed Google in market value. Apple's current market cap: $159.37 billion. Google's: $157.56 billion. Not that we didn't see this coming. Indeed, Valleywag predicted it back in November of 2007. "Apple knows how to design not just gadgets, but the businesses that go around them," the blog noted. "And as a result, we wouldn't be surprised if Apple is worth more than Google within two years."

Make that two years or less.

Apple is a gadget company. That's where they make their money.

That's why they took the word "computer" out of their name. They only have a small share of the desktop market and that's all they will ever have. Even they realize this.

Apple is way over-valued. I think that their business has a price-premium of 25-50% on good-will that the consumers are giving them. I think the recent outcry over the Apps store and over the Kill Switch will shift consumers away from Apple as they realize that the company is out to make profits, and only profits just everyone else

***Disclaimer, I am short Apple*****

I like both companies but Apple has products that are fun to use and practical. Google is just a software company while Apple is multifaceted. Apple is the creme d la creme of computer hardware platforms.

That is merely one metric, of course, the metric of stock price and number of shares.

Another metric, a more practical one, is how many people use Google in a day compared to how many people use Apple in a day.

The world is filled with people who use Google and the world is filled with people who don't use Apple.

Another metric, a more practical one, is how much the dividend payment from a share is.

lol, how many people "use" apple? what kind of metric is that? if Google is "used" so much more than Apple, then why are they worth less than Apple? I use my Westinghouse TV a lot more than I use the services of Halliburton .. does that mean Westinghouse is somehow a more powerful company?

And Apple doesn't have dividends ... so what?

It costs a lot more for an iPhone than it does to type a search word into www.google.com. http://mespace.wordpress.com

how many people use a service a day would be a meaningful metric maybe in an alternate universe.

lets stick to tangible measures like market cap, sales, book value, cash flow from operations, free cash flow..ya.

the above post reminds me of those days of dot com boom (ya those clinton years!!). companies riding sky high without any meaningful cash flows.

Google pays dividends?

I bought appl at just over $12/share in 1997, have bought and sold a few time since then (only in the last year with the swings). Each share I had split twice and is now worth 4 shares, and is trading at more than 10 times initial value. The long and short of it (long for me) is that the $12,000 we had in the bank that I begged my wife to let me spend the day the first imac was announced is now over $800,000. And we bought lots more when the .com dropped out in 2000....

But then again, I use a Mac (several of them), own a handful of iPods, and have NEVER clicked on a google ad ....

I am thinking of getting one. How's the ATT coverage? I have been w/ Verizon for years and love the coverage.

I have to say I am NOT happy with the ATT coverage... I live/work in phoenix area (tempe & scottsdale) my iPhone hardly works either place. - I still carry 2 (other phone is Alltell for over 10 years)

That said - the iPhone is so flippin' cool and fun - it works 90% of the time every where else, that I put up with it. The touch screen, Internet, email, maps, the iPOD - worth it just for that.

A key, I think very-critical, difference between the two companies is that "Apple makes THINGS."

Excellent point--one often overlooked. The demands of design and manufacturing, not to mention R&D, are much different than selling information. Also it should be underscored that Apple Inc. has no real competition while Google does.

Apple has TONS of competition. Their market share is minature comapred to Google's market share of search. The only product that Apple even has that can compare to Google's search market share is the iPod but that is loosing out, fast.

I always find it hard to understand how a company that produces nothing can be worth so much money.
