LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — A man recently fired from a Target store barged into the Arkansas Democratic headquarters Wednesday and fatally shot the state party chairman before speeding off in his pickup. Police later shot and killed the suspect after a 30-mile chase.

Police identified the suspect as 50-year-old Timothy Dale Johnson of Searcy, a town about 50 miles northeast of Little Rock. They said that moments after the shooting, Johnson pointed a handgun at a worker at the nearby Arkansas Baptist headquarters. An official there said he told the worker, "I lost my job."

Chairman Bill Gwatney died four hours after the shooting. The 48-year-old former state senator had been planning to travel to the Democratic National Convention later this month as a superdelegate. He had backed Hillary Rodham Clinton but endorsed Barack Obama after she dropped out of the race.

Clinton and her husband, former President and former Arkansas Gov. Bill Clinton, issued a statement saying Gwatney was "not only a strong chairman of Arkansas' Democratic Party, but ... also a cherished friend and confidant."

Conway police said a Target store 30 miles north of Little Rock had fired Johnson earlier Wednesday because he had written graffiti on a store wall. The age and address provided by Conway officers matched those provided by Little Rock police for its suspect.

Witnesses said the gunman entered the party offices shortly before noon and said he wanted to see Gwatney.

"He said he was interested in volunteering, but that was obviously a lie," said 17-year-old party volunteer Sam Higginbotham. He said that when the suspect was refused a meeting with Gwatney, he pushed past employees to reach the chairman's office.

Little Rock police spokesman Lt. Terry Hastings said the suspect and Gwatney introduced themselves to one another, at which time the suspect "pulled out a handgun and shot Gwatney several times." Hastings didn't say what the two discussed, but said their discussion was not a heated one.

Police said after leaving the office, the suspect pointed a gun at a worker at the Baptist headquarters seven blocks away. When asked what was wrong, the man said "I lost my job" said Dan Jordan, the group's business manager.

After the suspect avoided spike strips and a roadblock along U.S. 167 near Sheridan, police rammed his car, spinning it, said Grant County Sheriff Lance Huey. He got out of his truck and began shooting, and state police and sheriff's deputies fired back, striking him several times, he said.

Hastings said investigators found at least two handguns in the suspect's truck.

There was a busy signal Wednesday night at a phone number listed under Johnson's name. Little Rock police said they could find no criminal record for him.

According to Conway police spokeswoman Sharen Carter, Target fired Johnson before 8 a.m. Wednesday because he had written on a wall. Other store employees said Johnson's body shook as he turned in his ID badge. A Target manager had called police because of the incident but the wall had already been cleaned.

The state Capitol was locked down for about an hour until police got word the gunman had been captured, said Arkansas State Capitol police Sgt. Charlie Brice.

Gov. Mike Beebe, a Democrat who served with Gwatney in the state Senate, had been on a flight to Springdale in northwestern Arkansas. He returned to Little Rock and joined an impromptu vigil at University Hospital after what he called a "shocking and senseless attack." Gwatney had been Beebe's finance chairman during the governor's 2006 campaign.

"Arkansas has lost a great son, and I have lost a great friend. There is deep pain in Arkansas tonight because of the sheer number of people who knew, respected and loved Bill Gwatney," Beebe said.

Karen Ray, executive director of the Republican Party of Arkansas, sent her workers home early "out of an abundance of caution."

"Our hearts go out to everyone at the Democratic headquarters. What a tragedy," Ray said. "This is just a very upsetting, troubling and scary thing for our staff as well."

Sarah Lee, a sales clerk at a flower shop across street from the party headquarters, said that around noon Gwatney's secretary ran into the shop and asked someone to call 911.

Lee said the secretary told her the man had come into the party's office and asked to speak with Gwatney. When the secretary said she wouldn't allow him to meet with Gwatney, the man went into his office and shot him, Lee said.

Last November, a distraught man wearing what appeared to be a bomb walked into a Clinton campaign office in New Hampshire and demanded to speak to the candidate about access to mental health care. A hostage drama dragged on for nearly six hours until he peacefully surrendered.

The confrontation brought Clinton's campaign to a standstill just five weeks before the New Hampshire primary. Security for her was increased as a precaution. She said she did not know the suspect.

Yep. Just like the title of Coulter's book says, "Liberals Are Traitors." We all know what the punishment for treason is, traditionally, right? The right wing hatemongers are finally reaping the fruits they longed for.

This was just a little too random for my tastes. But no one seems to know why the rich politico types would send a zomby after Gwaltney. He supported Hillary till she quit, unless she didn't really quit and Gwaltney was sticking with Obama anyway, but that's absurd.

But then if he was mad at Target, we'd be hearing about the mass murder at Target. No He drove 50 miles and knew who he wanted and where he was. And it seems he knew when to go. We're missing something in this story. Like the plot.

He was a nut case. He sent himself after whoever came up in his mind. What, do you think he had a pair of receivers tuned in for his instructions?

Excellent point, hoss. For some reason AzFake feels impelled to deny the fact he didn't just kill anybody (as a truly insane person would) and neither did he choose to kill those who disemployed him (at Target). Rather, he went way out of his way to kill someone ensconced in his office, someone who was the leader of a political party. This was no random act, this was an act motivated by a hatred of Democrats/liberals inflamed by what? Hannity, Coulter, Savage, Limbaugh, etc?

Hate speech appeals to those with lots of free-floating aggression, of whom there are many in our anonymous, alienating culture. The haters give them a target, an object to vilify, to blame, and the followers of the haters come to believe that if they destroy that target, everything will be better. Demagogues have always known this. The objects that cathect the angers need have no rational connection to the angers of the followers, they only need to be made an out-group in the minds of the followers for violence against them to be justified.

I watched 5 minutes of Bill O'Reilly last night, which is about as much as I can take. You should have heard the damage control; how the hatemongers are really the liberals and leftists. His evidence is, of course, blogs like this.
O'Reilly has got to be sweating right now, hoping they don't find his book on this guy's bookshelf (like the other guy in Tennessee).

I would like the Republicans here to please name me the prominent right wingers who have been gunned down lately. I seem to have lost count.
Which right wingers were shot in church by someone who said he wanted to kill conservatives? Which state Republican chairman was murdered in his office? Which terrorist sent anthrax to Republican senators?
For the life of me, I cannot remember.

You don't have to be a Repub to do that. Ronald Reagan, Gerald Ford (attempted) . Just to name two. Lately is a little subjective but there are others as well if you care to look. Nut cases seem to cross all party lines. None have a stamp on their foreheads.

has any attention been given to that fact...about the guy in Tenn who was an O'Reilly fan? I know it's not O'Reilly's fault, but his heated rhetoric does raise eyebrows and to have this happen is a cause for concern.

An awful lot of musicians have been blamed for the stupid things people do. You'd think it would only be fair. It got to the point at my middle school (right after Columbine) that if you were known to like Manson you were generally harrassed by the administration. It would be nice to have that kind of reation over this...

Little Rock is a great city. I've lived all over the country and I've never seen as strong a sense of community activism as I have there.
Gwatney spent most everyday driving out to the different communities to be in touch with people. Arkansas is a community based state. They lost an integral leader yesterday.

Is anyone watching the CNN online- "Govenor of Arkansas" speaks regarding the shooting?

There is SOMETHING terribly amis here?
If this shooting was random and at the Democrativ headquaters....why did BOTH REPUBLICAN AND DEMOCRATIC OFFICES AT THE CAPITOL (30 miles away)....CLOSE?

I hope with all my heart that the Obama campaign sends someone to investigate this.

I don't know it just feels like something's wrong here...very wrong...

Of course my sympathies lie with the victim and his family, but I can't help but feel sorry for the shooter as well. I always have so much honest sympathy when I hear about these loners who go on rampages. When you just don't fit into human society, and have little human interaction, it must be a lot easier than the rest of us would like to admit to just lose it completely.

I can remember backpacking through Central America one summer. Knowing spanish, I did befriend and interact with locals, but there were also long stretches of time when I would be in the rainforest or mountains and would be completely on my own. I remember how achingly lonely it could get after just one week of not having a meaningful conversation with another human being. I literally cannot fathom that being my entire life. It looks like this guys parents were all he had, then he lost them. That job, the little bit of interaction he got on it, was probably all he had to distract himself from the fact that he had no one.

I'm not saying that he and similar rampaging loners aren't completely and solely responsible for their actions. But I still feel pity for him at the empty life he must have led, and how much it messed his mind up to be capable of such a senseless act. Humans are social creatures. We are not meant to be on our own.

Totally agree with everything that you say here.

Guess one thing that would be interesting to know is how long he had been taking anti-depressants and if he recently stopped taking them. BigPharma loves to cover up the fact that many people become homicidal and suicidal because of those things. Here's a site that chronicles such stories: http://www.ssristories.com/ (click on the green link towards the top to view the incidents).

I wonder what he wrote on the wall, and if he had been listening to Rush Limbaugh.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 03:31 PM on 08/14/2008

My sympathies to the families of both VICTIMS. The gunman is the victim of the American economic/political system where humans are of no value, it is GREED, MONEY, MONEY, MONEY. Why should a 50 year old man be working at a store like Target where the minimum wage is paid that is nowhere near sufficient to live on particularly if one has a family to take care of. Even so, he had been fired from his job. Don't you see the disasterous economic system in this country where there is absolutely no social and economic justice, no support system for those who fail, no sympathy for those who are victimized by the Corrupt, corporate ruled political system. The stinky SYSTEM is the issue not that a man had a gun and killed someone else. Imagine how desparate and hopeless he must have been.

Come on, I'm a gun owner (don't try to come into my home uninvited) and we both know there are guys who need a gun to feel manly. This is not an attack on you and me because we are responsible gun owners, at least I'd guess you are, but we both have seen the other kind. Have you, as I have, seen the guy who shoots out traffic or street lights, shoots up in the air on New Year's Eve, carries one illegally under the driver seat of his vehicle or shoots randomly in a neighborhood? Some people should have the constitutional right to own a gun but should never own one. Any sensible gun owner knows that.

John Edwards' affair got multi-day nearly continuous coverage on FOX-KIDS, CNN and Talk Radio.
but the murder of a high ranking Democrat by another filthy slave stae conservative got a ticker tape mention at the bottom of the screen.

Ruppert Murdoch, and the scores of un-American minions who spew his message of hate are the biggest terrorists on Earth!
They spread their daily does of un-American hate speech in the guise of a news show to the largest group od idiots on earth...slave state conservatives.
And guess where this murder took place?
Yup another primitive, sewer slave state!

We warned everyone about this in 1983 when Reagan gave the airwaves to Rupert Murdoch, and no one listened. If the shut down the internet, then Rupert and his corporate allies will have total control of information in the U.S. Its difficult to see a pathway to freedom now.

From the article:

"SEARCY, Ark. - The sheriff's office says a search of Arkansas gunman Timothy Dale Johnson's home turned up 14 guns, antidepressants, his last will and testament and a Post-It note that bore his victim's last name and a telephone number."

Also:

"Gwatney owned three Little Rock area car dealerships and Wednesday's search of Johnson's home turned up two sets of keys for vehicles from Gwatney car lots. The guns included a pistol and 13 long guns."
