LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — A man recently fired from a Target store barged into the Arkansas Democratic headquarters Wednesday and fatally shot the state party chairman before speeding off in his pickup. Police later shot and killed the suspect after a 30-mile chase.

Police identified the suspect as 50-year-old Timothy Dale Johnson of Searcy, a town about 50 miles northeast of Little Rock. They said that moments after the shooting, Johnson pointed a handgun at a worker at the nearby Arkansas Baptist headquarters. An official there said he told the worker, "I lost my job."

Chairman Bill Gwatney died four hours after the shooting. The 48-year-old former state senator had been planning to travel to the Democratic National Convention later this month as a superdelegate. He had backed Hillary Rodham Clinton but endorsed Barack Obama after she dropped out of the race.

Clinton and her husband, former President and former Arkansas Gov. Bill Clinton, issued a statement saying Gwatney was "not only a strong chairman of Arkansas' Democratic Party, but ... also a cherished friend and confidant."

Conway police said a Target store 30 miles north of Little Rock had fired Johnson earlier Wednesday because he had written graffiti on a store wall. The age and address provided by Conway officers matched those provided by Little Rock police for its suspect.

Witnesses said the gunman entered the party offices shortly before noon and said he wanted to see Gwatney.

"He said he was interested in volunteering, but that was obviously a lie," said 17-year-old party volunteer Sam Higginbotham. He said that when the suspect was refused a meeting with Gwatney, he pushed past employees to reach the chairman's office.

Little Rock police spokesman Lt. Terry Hastings said the suspect and Gwatney introduced themselves to one another, at which time the suspect "pulled out a handgun and shot Gwatney several times." Hastings didn't say what the two discussed, but said their discussion was not a heated one.

Story continues below

Police said after leaving the office, the suspect pointed a gun at a worker at the Baptist headquarters seven blocks away. When asked what was wrong, the man said "I lost my job" said Dan Jordan, the group's business manager.

After the suspect avoided spike strips and a roadblock along U.S. 167 near Sheridan, police rammed his car, spinning it, said Grant County Sheriff Lance Huey. He got out of his truck and began shooting, and state police and sheriff's deputies fired back, striking him several times, he said.

Hastings said investigators found at least two handguns in the suspect's truck.

There was a busy signal Wednesday night at a phone number listed under Johnson's name. Little Rock police said they could find no criminal record for him.

According to Conway police spokeswoman Sharen Carter, Target fired Johnson before 8 a.m. Wednesday because he had written on a wall. Other store employees said Johnson's body shook as he turned in his ID badge. A Target manager had called police because of the incident but the wall had already been cleaned.

The state Capitol was locked down for about an hour until police got word the gunman had been captured, said Arkansas State Capitol police Sgt. Charlie Brice.

Gov. Mike Beebe, a Democrat who served with Gwatney in the state Senate, had been on a flight to Springdale in northwestern Arkansas. He returned to Little Rock and joined an impromptu vigil at University Hospital after what he called a "shocking and senseless attack." Gwatney had been Beebe's finance chairman during the governor's 2006 campaign.

"Arkansas has lost a great son, and I have lost a great friend. There is deep pain in Arkansas tonight because of the sheer number of people who knew, respected and loved Bill Gwatney," Beebe said.

Karen Ray, executive director of the Republican Party of Arkansas, sent her workers home early "out of an abundance of caution."

"Our hearts go out to everyone at the Democratic headquarters. What a tragedy," Ray said. "This is just a very upsetting, troubling and scary thing for our staff as well."

Sarah Lee, a sales clerk at a flower shop across street from the party headquarters, said that around noon Gwatney's secretary ran into the shop and asked someone to call 911.

Lee said the secretary told her the man had come into the party's office and asked to speak with Gwatney. When the secretary said she wouldn't allow him to meet with Gwatney, the man went into his office and shot him, Lee said.

Last November, a distraught man wearing what appeared to be a bomb walked into a Clinton campaign office in New Hampshire and demanded to speak to the candidate about access to mental health care. A hostage drama dragged on for nearly six hours until he peacefully surrendered.

The confrontation brought Clinton's campaign to a standstill just five weeks before the New Hampshire primary. Security for her was increased as a precaution. She said she did not know the suspect.

I expect this sort of thing will become more common now - political polarization combined with the coming recession. As people realize that their American dream is just that, as they lose their jobs and see bankruptcy nearing, as they can no longer afford a tankful of gas... it's going to be interesting to watch. I wonder if people will figure out who is really responsible?

I agree. This is what 20+ years of hate talk by the likes of Limbaugh, etc. have done. Obama was right when he said these disgruntled yokels cling to guns and religions (I'm paraphrasing). The extreme right can't think or process their emotions because they've been told what to think for 20 years. They solve their problems with violence.

Dear HuffPo,

Would it be possible to ask some of your lock step kool aid drinkers to show a little proof of their outrageous allegations the conservative talk show hosts Rush, Sean and Beck have asked for, endorsed or incited violence against liberal dems. The elimination of dems through death. Would that be possible?

Or is it that you enjoy the hate mongering here and feel it will only help BO in November? Please let this post come through as I would love to see the proof. As a listener of the above shows, I would like to hear what I missed. Ya know like all the hate speech Obama missed.

Let the flames begin. Only dates and times please. No third person quotes from fellow huffpoers. Thank you for your time.

It is distressing that these people are striking out at the individuals that are working to help them. I dont know this persons motivation, but the divisions in this country have become extreme. Political idiology has become toxic and we have been turned against our neighbors. We can only hope Americans recognize our peril and start paying attention.

It seems like there is a pattern being established with the Little Rock shooting of a democrat and the 'liberal' church shooting in Knoxvile, TN a few weeks ago. That fellow, Jim Adkisson, had some right wing material in his house. We'll have to wait and see about Johnson's political leanings but it sure looks to me that the NEO-CON, CHRISTIAN-ZIONIST, FACIST, RIGHT WINGERS have declared war on progressives. What has McCain said about the most recent shooting? Let's bring the troops home from Iraq and use them to fight our DOMESTIC TERRORISTS!

Unfortunately, most of the armed forces are Republicans and come from Red States. Montana, Texas, Florida, and Wyoming provide a disproportionately high number of military recruits (and all Red States) while while Massachussetts, District of Columbia, Rhode Island, and Utah provide disproportionately low number of military recruits (all but Utah being a Blue State).

42% of the military is from southern states and other than Maine, the north is underrepresented in the military. Not only that, AFTER September 11th, enlistment rates in the south increased based on % while enlistment rates in the northeast decreased, ESPECIALLY in New York and New Jersey.

This tragic event has very little to do with politics. This is a case of a mentally unstable, very dangerous, individual ("the voices in his head") that in his tortured reasoning selected a figure , as high up as he had ready acess to, in order to punish the "system"; the "world" that has wronged him. Only some intervening thought, within Johnson's head, prevented more death at the Baptist church (or more deaths at headquarters). If Target had only called police, after the graffiti (and preserved it) and the unusually strong reaction from a termination from a subsistence wage job, things might have turned out differently. I cannot believe this was the first time that friend , family or coworkers ever noticed any abberent behavior on the part of Johnson. There are many very dangerous people out there; we must be our brother's keeper. My sympathies to all concerned.

"If Target had only called police..."

From AFP:
*****

Police were called to a Target store in Conway, about 25 miles north of Little Rock, early Wednesday after coworkers complained about an agitated employee who had been fired for writing graffiti on a wall, the Arkansas News said.

The employee, Johnson, was "very agitated and shaking, and they feared for their safety," said Conway police spokeswoman Sharen Carter, who added that Johnson had departed by the time police arrived.

I should have been clearer. I meant before the firing. It is common to notify security in anticipation of a firing. I have seen it done 100's of times in both private enterprise and government offices. I think the clue Johnson was upset is because he wrote the graffitti BEFORE he was fired. Johnson was already experiencing a "mental brea" . I was faulting Target; it is just a lesson we should all learn.

Yes, when the head of the state Democratic Party is gunned down, it has nothing to do with politics. And when a killer targets a bunch of liberals in a Unitarian Church, that has nothing to do with politics. And when the anthrax terrorist uses WMD against two prominent Democratic senators and journalists, that has nothing to do with politics, either.
Funny how all these "apolitical" assassins are targeting only one political party, isn't it?

I would be curious to know the shooters background, my cousin listens to right-wingers like Monica Crawley to gain the other side’s perceptive. Monica is one of the milder ones and every second word out her mouth degrades liberals in some fashion, liberals are always the enemy with these propagandist. Since most of us are moderates this idea of us vs. them is very inaccurate, which was painfully evident is the wipeout of NE Republicans moderates like Lincoln Chaffey. Lincoln Chaffey and Joe Lieberman are perfect examples of this debate, Senator Chaffey was the only Republican to vote against the Iraq war authorization and Lieberman a former Democrat and presumed liberal is a neo-con chicken hawk.

Dehumanizing the so-called enemy has been used by the military for years to make it easier for soldiers to kill. I see little difference in the tactics used by the militant right wing and Christian right. Domestic terrorism is not new in the form of bombing planned parent-hood clinics, not to mention the murder of doctors. When a doctor is labeled an abortion doctor some zealot thinks thier empowered by God.

I listened to Fundamentalist Christian leaders who have left the movement all recount the same story. Frank Schaeffer author of “Crazy for God”, a former evangelical leader is the rule rather than the exception, he recounts his e-mail box was constantly filled with death threats and it only takes one disenfranchised nut to act on it.

Bill Gwatney was a pledged Superdelegate of Hillary Clinton. He was stand up Clinton supporter who lent support to Obama, at her request.

It is also believed that he is one of the 200-300 delegates who have signed the "300 Petition" to put Clinton on the ballot. This cannot be verified at this time because the signers are being kept anonymous to protect them from intimidation. Seem like that is a good idea.

I love it when, the tables are reversed, when the right wants to dump on something they don't like, there is plenty of blame on "influences" from music, etc. Something like this , where for years there has been constant barrage of calling supporters of Jesus/America/patriotism "warriors", and fighting for Right, and even "bashing in heads with baseball bats" from religious leaders to hate mongers we suddenly get wide eyed innocence from Right wing supporters surprised anyone might even contemplate a connection but not one condemnation even, of the act. Perhaps they are just thinking "A good start, how about more".Funny how they wouldn't care for this type of "justice" if it were their own family involved.

The Brownshirts and Blackshirts; the Unabomber and the Weathermen; Eric Rudolph and Tim McVeigh were all one and the same.

There is no distinction between them whatever their purported goals might have been. Any person or group who uses terrorist violence to achieve political ends in an open society is reprehensible.

This man was obviously tormented and in his twisted irrational thinking somehow that the Democrats might be to blame for his problems. You notice that the closer we get to the fall election more people are coming out of the woodwork making death threats against Obama? These idiotic talk radio hosts are partly to blame for trying to incite crazy behavior. It would be interesting to find out what he had written on the wall at work. Did anyone else notice how whenever there is a shooting/ assasination the perpetrator is always is referred to by the first middle and last names? WHY?

Why did I buy a gun and why do I want to keep my 2nd amendmant right? Because after Katrina a woman shot her brother dead over a bag of ice in my home town. Not NO. This is a fact. Then when I had to start calling on docs and clinics in NO I was advised by a NO resident to get a gun and keep it in the car. I have zero desire to shot any dem or republican, or anyone for that matter. But I will if need be to protect my family and myself.

This man who did the shooting lost it. For whatever reason.

There was zero press about the inmate out to death 2-3 weeks ago that gave his support to Obama while being strapped to the gurney. There is a good liberal dem for ya. He beat a man to death with a hammer. That my friends is a lot more rage than pulling a trigger. Why there was not a lot of hoopla over this I can't imagine.

but according to a number of threads here and at kos and du and such...Dems think regular religion is stupid...they themselves tend to be athiest, wiccan, worship Gaia, crystal and such...so those must have been moderate republicans in that church...right?

It's just more irrational slave state racism...nothing more, nothing less!
And it amazes me.
You'd think slave state whites would love African Americans.
After all, if it wasn't for African Americans, there wouldn't be a south!
It sure as hell wasn't built by the whites down thar.
Nope, those lazy good for nothing confederates sat around marrying their kin while the entire south was built by slaves!

Ungrateful racists...another jewel in the slave state's crown!
