In this Oct. 11, 2001 file photo, famous chef, cookbook author and television show host Julia Child, shares a laugh with students from her alma mater, Smith College in Northampton, Mass. Child shared a secret with U.S. Supreme Court Justice Arthur Goldberg and Chicago White Sox catcher Moe Berg at a time when the Nazis threatened the world. They served in an international spy ring managed by the Office of Strategic Services, an early version of the CIA created in World War II by President Franklin Roosevelt. The secret comes out Thursday, Aug. 14, 2008, all of the names and previously classified files identifying nearly 24,000 spies who formed the U.S.'s first centralized intelligence effort. WASHINGTON — Famed chef Julia Child shared a secret with Supreme Court Justice Arthur Goldberg and Chicago White Sox catcher Moe Berg at a time when the Nazis threatened the world.

They served in an international spy ring managed by the Office of Strategic Services, an early version of the CIA created in World War II by President Franklin Roosevelt.

The full secret comes out Thursday, all of the names and previously classified files identifying nearly 24,000 spies who formed the first centralized intelligence effort by the United States. The National Archives, which this week released a list of the names found in the records, will make available for the first time all 750,000 pages identifying the vast spy network of military and civilian operatives.

They were soldiers, actors, historians, lawyers, athletes, professors, reporters. But for several years during World War II, they were known simply as the OSS. They studied military plans, created propaganda, infiltrated enemy ranks and stirred resistance among foreign troops.

Some of those on the list have been identified previously as having worked for the OSS, but their personnel records never have been available before. Those records would show why they were hired, jobs they were assigned to and perhaps even missions they pursued while working for the agency.

Among the more than 35,000 OSS personnel files are applications, commendations and handwritten notes identifying young recruits who, like Child, Goldberg and Berg, earned greater acclaim in other fields _ Arthur Schlesinger Jr., a historian and special assistant to President Kennedy; Sterling Hayden, a film and television actor whose work included a role in "The Godfather"; and Thomas Braden, an author whose "Eight Is Enough" book inspired the 1970s television series.

Other notables identified in the files include John Hemingway, son of author Ernest Hemingway; Quentin and Kermit Roosevelt, sons of President Theodore Roosevelt, and Miles Copeland, father of Stewart Copeland, drummer for the band The Police.

The release of the OSS personnel files uncloaks one of the last secrets from the short-lived wartime intelligence agency, which for the most part later was folded into the CIA after President Truman disbanded it in 1945.

"I think it's terrific," said Elizabeth McIntosh, 93, a former OSS agent now living in Woodbridge, Va. "They've finally, after all these years, they've gotten the names out. All of these people had been told never to mention they were with the OSS."

The CIA had resisted releasing OSS records for decades. But former CIA Director William Casey, himself an OSS veteran, cleared the way for transfer of millions of OSS documents to the National Archives when he took over the agency in 1981. The personnel files are the latest to be made public.

Information about OSS involvement was so guarded that relatives often couldn't confirm a family member's work with the group.

Walter Mess, who handled covert OSS operations in Poland and North Africa, said he kept quiet for more than 50 years, only recently telling his wife of 62 years about his OSS activity.

"I was told to keep my mouth shut," said Mess, now 93 and living in Falls Church, Va.

The files will offer new information even for those most familiar with the agency. Charles Pinck, president of the OSS Society created by former OSS agents and their relatives, said the nearly 24,000 employees included in the archives far exceeds previous estimates of 13,000.

The newly released documents will clarify these and other issues, said William Cunliffe, an archivist who has worked extensively with the OSS records at the National Archives.

"We're saying the OSS was a lot bigger than they were saying," Cunliffe said.

It's not news that Julia and Paul Child worked for the OSS, it's news that a full list of names was released. So coverage is going to metion the most famous names on that list whether they were previously known or not.
I'd like to let Julia have the last word, and imagine her saying it in THAT voice. In her autobiography she said that OSS stood for 'Oh So Secret."

I never knew if I was laughing at her or with her
What a great talent and a great sport she was.

Oh, and a fine chef.

I think she was a terrific chef, but isn't she a bit old to be dating?

Very cool! I always found Julia Child intriguing, especially when she recommended that we all eat butter and duck.

What people DON'T know is that the OSS was disbanded after Truman realised that the Nazis were more valuable working for our government than in a prison cell.

Just a little FYI:

Kermit Roosevelt continued on with intelligence work serving in the CIA. The most notable mark on his resume is the engineering of the 1956 coup which toppled the popularly elected Mohammed Mossadegh and replaced him with the Shah. Soon thereafter, Kermit retired from the CIA apparently because he was so conflicted over what he had orchestrated.

That was Kermit Jr, Kermit's son and TR's grandson.

For those of you who find this to be old news, could you tell me why no one is mentioning Lucky Luciano. CNN featured his photo among the rest of the people mentioned here and on television, but no mention his contribution.

Probably because Luciano's involvement with the US Navy during WWII has been something the government isn't too proud of. It was a convoluted plan involving the longshoremen and the docks in New York. Luciano was in jail, having been convicted of 50+ counts of promoting & benefiting from prostitution, & serving 30 years. Lucky still controlled the docks where the government believed high levels of spying were going on. The US knew they needed Luciano's help & went to see him in jail and asked for his help. He agreed, believing the US would release him for his help. After he put the word out, suspicious fires & bombing ceased and the longshoremen were able to identity at least seven serious plots against this country. The upshot of all of this was Lucky being released after the war and promptly deported back to Sicily! He was livid and made his way to Cuba shortly thereafter where he became a huge part of the Havana Mob. War does indeed make strange bedfellows!

Actually more important, they are leaving out 'A man called Intrepid' more important then Luciano

I was always suspicious of her after seeing the episode where she diced an onion with her bare hands.

And that rather ugly laser carving of a cornish game hen.

Come to think of it she always insisted that broth be shaken and not stirred when preparing the gravy.

Childs... Julia Childs

Yes, this is old news but I was surprised to see Quentin Roosevelt's name on the list. He was shot down and killed by the Germans in World War One, specifically on 14 July 1918, while flying a mission over France. Quite impossible that he was a member of the OSS, which was created in 1942, 24 years after his death.
I'm not sure if this is a CIA historical problem or journalistic mistake?

In honor of Lovely Julia ~~

Tonight I'm going to make Julia Child's Reine de Saba (Queen of Sheba) cake.
http://www.thatsmyhome.com/sweetspot/queen-sheba-cake.htm

Over the weekend, I'll find occasions to prepare her Risotto with a nice steak ~
http://www.cuisine-france.com/recipes/risotto.htm

Perhaps have Eggs Benedict with her hollandaise ~
http://www.recipezaar.com/251332

And will hit the farmstands to pick up ingredients for her ratatouille ~ to which I add a bit of high quality vinegar and some whole green olives. And sometimes some fresh basil or pesto.

They are STILL teasing on the cables even tho every comment on this subject is that EVERYONE KNEW THIS YEARS AGO!

The news must be the release of THE WHOLE LIST from the government.

Or....? Maybe there's a whole new generation of politicos and foodies who will be delighted by this tasty little tidbit? I suspect young people actally know who Child is because her series is still always running somewhere at three in the morning. And... "Oh, I've cut my finger!" A classic.
