HONOLULU — Barack Obama chose Mark Warner, Virginia's Senate candidate and former governor, to deliver the keynote address at the Democratic convention, underscoring Democrats' all-out effort to win the Southern state for the first time since 1964.

The move announced Wednesday also raises questions about the prospects of Obama choosing Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine as his running mate.

Warner is to speak on Aug. 26, the second day of the convention in Denver, while the yet-to-be-named vice presidential nominee is slated to address delegates a day later on Aug. 27.

Kaine is among a handful of Democrats said to be under serious consideration for the No. 2 spot.

Would the Illinois senator devote two major prime-time national addresses to politicians from the same state?

It's possible, given the attention Obama already is lavishing on the state.

He has visited Virginia a couple of times at least since wrapping up the nomination and is pouring money and manpower into it. Democrats consider the state the most promising as they seek victory in Southern and Western states that George W. Bush won in the last two elections and that Republicans have held for decades.

At the very least, placing Warner in the national spotlight could help boost his own Senate campaign; he is trying to succeed retiring Republican John Warner and give Democrats a hold on both of the state's seats.

The keynote address is a plum speaking spot that often is a springboard to national prominence. Obama, then a Senate candidate from Illinois, delivered it four years ago and began a rise in national politics expected to reach the Democratic nomination for president.

Obama's campaign called Warner an innovative businessman and bipartisan leader, fitting for the evening's theme of economic opportunity.

"Like Barack Obama, Mark Warner is not afraid to challenge the status quo to bring people together and get things moving," campaign manager David Plouffe said in a statement. "It's that kind of spirit and innovation that resulted in his selection as keynote speaker on a night when we will be discussing how to renew America's promise."

Warner, a businessman who became wealthy from work and investments in the cellular telephone industry, ran an exploratory campaign for the 2008 presidential nomination early in the race. He surprised many Democrats when he ultimately decided against running, saying he didn't want to put the demands of a national run on his family. There was talk he might be a good running mate pick for Obama, but he removed himself from consideration, saying he would only pursue the Senate seat.

Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, Obama's rival during the presidential primaries, is also scheduled to speak Aug. 26, an indication that Obama probably won't ask her to join the Democratic ticket.

Some news reports had incorrectly said Clinton would be the keynote speaker _ although the convention committee and campaign always described her as the Tuesday "headliner." Clinton and Obama advisers have been in delicate negotiations over her role at the convention, with some of her supporters calling for her name to be put in nomination because of her strong second-place showing.

Giving Warner the prime role could be viewed as a slight to some of those supporters as the Obama campaign is working to build unity going into the fall election. But Sam Arora, a former Clinton staffer who co-founded a group, VoteBoth.com, that encouraged Obama to pick Clinton as his running mate, said Warner was a good choice.

"Mark Warner is the future of the Democratic Party, and putting him on Tuesday night with Hillary Clinton is exactly right move for Obama," said Arora, who shut down the VoteBoth.com effort two weeks ago under the assumption that Clinton would not be picked. "They highlight Senator Obama's vision and leadership qualities."

A Clinton spokesman did not respond to a message for comment.

In an effort to reach out to anti-abortion Democrats, Obama gave Sen. Bob Casey of Pennsylvania, long an opponent of abortion, a speaking role the same Tuesday night that Warner and Clinton were to address delegates.

Casey is the son of the late Pennsylvania Gov. Robert P. Casey, who was not given a marquee speaking spot at the 1992 convention because of his anti-abortion views. Bob Casey endorsed Obama over Clinton in his state's primary.

Mark Warner is exactly the wrong speaker to give the keynote address at the forthcoming Democratic convention.

I sat 20 feet in front of Mark Warner when he gave a major address at the New Hampshire Democratic Party Convention several years ago when he began his short but not sweet run for the Democratic nomination for President. The response to Warner's speech was tepid, despite the dozen T-shirted supporters he had brought with him to pack the front of the audience and all the freebies they handed out - and with good reason.

All Warner wanted to get across was that he was best-suited to work with the Republicans. He would be most successful in 'crossing the aisle' to them and working out compromises. Besides that dubious goal, he had nothing to offer other than that he was a successful businessman and multi-millionaire. Big deal. The man is barely a liberal, much less a progressive, and will point the convention in a conciliatory direction rather than taking a bold stand for real change. He represents the past, not the future. If Obama hoped to gain victory in Virginia by this choice, he's sadly mistaken.

It's going to be a GLORIOUS convention.

I would like to see a GOOD democratic convention like in the 1959 campaign. I loved JFK. I even touched his hand when he came into LA that year for the democratic convention. Now don't get me wrong I am registered as a Democrat. I believe that God created everybody. I also believe that God does not want us to kill HUMAN BEINGS! That is the fifth commandment, THOU SHALT NOT KILL! That would also include taking an instrument and inserting it into a nine month pregnant woman and killing it just because the mother doesn't want it to be born! That is why I do not want OBAMA to take the cloak of JFK and say I am leading you into the promise land. I just want a President that I can look up to and have him or her look out for even the littlest person. John McCain, Edward Kennedy, and Hillary Clinton all voted against that very important bill. I don't want to have a president who can't look out for the littlest person.

NO OBAMA! Hillary or McCain in 2008!

Holy, holy rolly.

What a load of crock!! Sure you do!!

You were never going to ever vote for Barack Obama, and you know it, so stop looking for excuses.

GO OBAMA!!

I wonder if ANY of you fools have ever given thought to the fact that you are clearly ostracizing your beloved Hillary by your very own antics??? If all here are sick of you, can you even imagine how you're coming across to the campaign who you claim "you'll support" if Hillary is a on the ticket? Give me a break. Go away.

Unbeliveable tactics by the Dem party........and it makes it really easy to turn away.

It'll be a fine thing for Mark Warner to speak at the Convention. What's more for me is that he is a shoo-in to take John (spit and polish 'moderate' -- except when voting with Boosh, most every time) Warner's seat in the U.S. Senate. We need the 60 votes, and I have not doubt that Mark Warner will be on the side of wisdom and sanity. I vote in Virginia.

I'm glad Obama thought Warner would be really good as VP.

But, if vetting is a problem, he's wise not to get into it at all.

As Hillary showed, you can run for president with less scrutiny than a VP. If she'd won, we'd have had to see her tax return, library donors, list of Bill's questionable business ventures, the details of the Cayman island accounts, etc....later and "Deal with it!"

So, whatever difficulties may be with the vetting, Warner is better off to not risk it--or waste their time.

Warner is running for Senator of Virginia. He is a shoe in for the seat. He's not going to risk that plum seat for a possible VP seat. The American electorate is highly unpredicitable, Virginia voters have basically guaranteed him the Senate seat.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 08:34 PM on 08/13/2008

I always worry when someone says they won't be vetted, that's why Bill's refusal to be vetted was such a red flag. If you got nothing to hide...

...and is HuffPost going to do a Joe Biden thread, since KO said tonight that the tea leaves are pointing in his direction, esp. with the theme of the VP night being "security".

Warner is a star in Virginia. He's up over 20% over the Rep candidate, Gilmore. There's a reason for that. Warner had to deal with the mess that 'Macaca Allen' and 'Gridlock' Gilmore left Virginians. He did so successfully. In the end, Warner may be the candidate with the coattails in Virginia!

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 06:23 PM on 08/13/2008

I had hoped Warner would run for president-very talented-another man who got where he is on his own merits and talents-He and Obama seem to share the same philosophy of bipartisanship, solution focussed leadership. that's what we need now more than ever.

If you read the article it's evident he refused because he's not interested in the position and wants to keep running for the senate.

Fair play to him.

She will speak on Tuesday about Obama"s economic agenda.

She won't be the VP. It will be Joe Biden, Evan Bayh, Tony Zinni or Hillary Clinton. That's the top 4.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 08:13 PM on 08/13/2008

To make the magic number sixty in the senate to break Republican filibusters it is a no brainer that the Democratic VP will NOT be a senator. Has to be a Governor. Won't be Sebelius. She is smart enough but is a deadly dull speaker - read BORING. Would not help the ticket.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 02:57 AM on 08/14/2008

So let's get this clear.
Hillary is no longer the 'headliner' on tuesday. she's back of the bus to the guy from virginia. also, probably third position actually to casey, who is anti-choice.
brilliant selection by the obama team to help bring those pesky women on board.
ON THE ANNIVERSARY OF WOMEN'S SUFFRAGE, which was supposed to be the point of hillary speaking on tuesday, the first woman to ever win a presidential primary, who also got 18 million votes, will get tossed to the back for the anti-choice guy, and warner.
sweet. smooth. anyone recall the dignity with which jesse jackson was treated at the convention, with far fewer delegates?
unless this is all a head fake, and hillary is going to get the v.p. nod, i am now convinced the obama campaign is out of its collective mind, and had a dandy plan for the primaries, but is clueless for the general.
and nice as he may be, why do we also have his brother in law speaking on monday night? i believe he is the coach of the brown's basketball team?
i'm really hoping there's a great secret plan here, but if there ain't, denver is going to be a freaking mess. i've got to think something's up, becasue to put BILL clinton on wednesday, when the v.p. selection is announced, and for it not to be hillary, is such a spit in the face.... is the obama camp that out of touch?

I don't know why it's so hard for H*illary supporters to understand that the convention is not about her. She lost. Nothing the nominee does now is about her. She ran a mean spirited, incompetent campaign. The C*lintons seem to think every blooming thing is about them. They need a more realistic mindset.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 06:18 PM on 08/13/2008

this is why Obama can't risk making her the keynote speaker. You never know what she might say. They(hill and bill) have obviously not recovered from their defeat and are still in a state of shock and disbelief. You can't hinge the convention on people who are coming out of a trauma.

So on one hand, people say the convention is becoming "all Clinton all the time".

On another, the Clintonistas say "it's not good enough!"

Jesus! Obama can't win with you people. Everytime he tries to be accomodating and respectful, the msm say he's showing the clintons too much respect, and the Clintonistas say not enough.

I say to heck with all of you. We'll just go win this thing ourselves, and you all can sit on the sideline. all 30 of you who showed up for that little backyard "cathartic" party.

from what i read on talk left, there are about 10 speakers on tueday -- sebelius, rendell, strickland, casey, warner, napolitano, a couple of others and hillary. nuts. you are correct. it's not very respectful of the millions of votes hillary got. and were it not for the mess with edwards, he also probably would have spoken on tuesday.

Great! Take the keynote away from HRC and have a man as the keynote speaker on the 100th anniversary of women getting the right to vote. Way to unify! This embarrassing sham of a convention will be the end of the presidential campaign, not the beginning - unless a miracle happens and they give the nomination to HRC. O is barely tied in the polls and people have been holding out. HRC will still be the star of the convention no matter how he tries to bury her. She'll give the speech of her life. Then O will have his gaudy stadium event with his supporters chanting like some scary cult and making the new manufactured "O" symbol with their hands - GROSS! You think middle America isn't going to RUN FOR THE HILLS?! On August 29th the real numbers will emerge and he'll dip to the mid 30's. The Dems have officially blown the most cakewalk election in decades.

Who cares how I vote? The Dems have lost the election with these horrible strategic decisions. They botched the primary and then they botched the task of "unity" all by a constant obsession about manipulating the outcome while throwing democracy out the window. Them taking the speech away and replacing her with a man NOT TO MENTION having a ANTI-CHOICE Bob Casey speak on the same night?! Are they out of their gourds?!

This has set people off today like I've never seen them. You won't know about that because all you do is read Huffpo. But the rest of the world, even HRC supporters who were going along with the program, are up in arms. So sad.
