HONOLULU — Barack Obama chose Mark Warner, Virginia's Senate candidate and former governor, to deliver the keynote address at the Democratic convention, underscoring Democrats' all-out effort to win the Southern state for the first time since 1964.

The move announced Wednesday also raises questions about the prospects of Obama choosing Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine as his running mate.

Warner is to speak on Aug. 26, the second day of the convention in Denver, while the yet-to-be-named vice presidential nominee is slated to address delegates a day later on Aug. 27.

Kaine is among a handful of Democrats said to be under serious consideration for the No. 2 spot.

Would the Illinois senator devote two major prime-time national addresses to politicians from the same state?

It's possible, given the attention Obama already is lavishing on the state.

He has visited Virginia a couple of times at least since wrapping up the nomination and is pouring money and manpower into it. Democrats consider the state the most promising as they seek victory in Southern and Western states that George W. Bush won in the last two elections and that Republicans have held for decades.

At the very least, placing Warner in the national spotlight could help boost his own Senate campaign; he is trying to succeed retiring Republican John Warner and give Democrats a hold on both of the state's seats.

The keynote address is a plum speaking spot that often is a springboard to national prominence. Obama, then a Senate candidate from Illinois, delivered it four years ago and began a rise in national politics expected to reach the Democratic nomination for president.

Obama's campaign called Warner an innovative businessman and bipartisan leader, fitting for the evening's theme of economic opportunity.

"Like Barack Obama, Mark Warner is not afraid to challenge the status quo to bring people together and get things moving," campaign manager David Plouffe said in a statement. "It's that kind of spirit and innovation that resulted in his selection as keynote speaker on a night when we will be discussing how to renew America's promise."

Warner, a businessman who became wealthy from work and investments in the cellular telephone industry, ran an exploratory campaign for the 2008 presidential nomination early in the race. He surprised many Democrats when he ultimately decided against running, saying he didn't want to put the demands of a national run on his family. There was talk he might be a good running mate pick for Obama, but he removed himself from consideration, saying he would only pursue the Senate seat.

Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, Obama's rival during the presidential primaries, is also scheduled to speak Aug. 26, an indication that Obama probably won't ask her to join the Democratic ticket.

Some news reports had incorrectly said Clinton would be the keynote speaker _ although the convention committee and campaign always described her as the Tuesday "headliner." Clinton and Obama advisers have been in delicate negotiations over her role at the convention, with some of her supporters calling for her name to be put in nomination because of her strong second-place showing.

Giving Warner the prime role could be viewed as a slight to some of those supporters as the Obama campaign is working to build unity going into the fall election. But Sam Arora, a former Clinton staffer who co-founded a group, VoteBoth.com, that encouraged Obama to pick Clinton as his running mate, said Warner was a good choice.

"Mark Warner is the future of the Democratic Party, and putting him on Tuesday night with Hillary Clinton is exactly right move for Obama," said Arora, who shut down the VoteBoth.com effort two weeks ago under the assumption that Clinton would not be picked. "They highlight Senator Obama's vision and leadership qualities."

A Clinton spokesman did not respond to a message for comment.

In an effort to reach out to anti-abortion Democrats, Obama gave Sen. Bob Casey of Pennsylvania, long an opponent of abortion, a speaking role the same Tuesday night that Warner and Clinton were to address delegates.

Casey is the son of the late Pennsylvania Gov. Robert P. Casey, who was not given a marquee speaking spot at the 1992 convention because of his anti-abortion views. Bob Casey endorsed Obama over Clinton in his state's primary.

So pleased he's having Casey speak. They seemed to get along very well when he was here in PA. Of course, Casey was probably the only friendly face he saw while he was here, but whatever, it's a good move.

The DNC threw every really good candidate to the wolves. They wanted obama and they pulled hooks and crooks to get him. I hope he does pick Tim Kaine, the worst choice of any one even pulling some unknown off the street. The more stupidier he gets the worst his chances. I'm voting for Cynthia McKinney.

I have to disagree. Even though Warner was my first choice, and I supported Hillary in the primaries, I don't believe the DNC did anything to help Obama, he won fair and square. That being said, I still think Warner would have been a wonderful president. But, he'll have his time in the Senate and then we'll go from there.

Yep, winning the majority vote and the majority of pledged delegates sure was a dishonest way to win. Not like trying to steal the nomination by getting Super Delegates to overturn the popular vote and majority of elected delegates.

You've got two weeks left until all your whining and the CIintons become completely irrelevant. Live it up, crybaby!

I was waxing nostalgic a few weeks ago and I stumbled upon this. Some of it is dates, but much of it is still applicable. It bogs down in the middle, but the last third soars. So--for the youngsters in the audience--one of the great speeches of the twentieth century--Mario Cuomo's Tale of Two Cities speech from the 1984 Democratic convention.

Hey--I didn't say anything about the results! Actually, dems came out of that convention pretty enthusiastic. As Cuomo said, however, it seemed that America couldn't separate the message from the messenger with regards to Ronny RayGun.

hope to god this is an obama head fake, and he's going to tap clinton for v.p. otherwise, kicking her to the bottom of the pile on a tuesday is certainly not the 'respect' her delegates are looking for, in response to 18 million votes.
it's got to be a head fake. he couldn't be that thick.
it's got to be clinton as v.p., and bayh the stalking horse while he was on vacation in hawaii.
HOWEVER, i never thought kofi annan would pull the weapons inspectors out of iraq, so OF COURSE we'd never have gulf war II. as long as the inspectors were on the ground, what's bush going to do? bomb them? then, mysteriously enough, the people who insure the u.n.'s helicopters said they could no longer do it, becasue of the u.s. warships massed to attack. and annan pulls the inspectors and SHOCK AND AWE starts (another big 'way to go' for the MSM, by the way, who seem to forget how enthralled they were to be 'imbedded'.
so okay. i'm going to say, obama is one of the great strategic minds. it's got to be clinton.
he couldn't be that thick. his advisors could be. but not him. and he runs his own show.
if it ain't hillary, get ready for president elect mccain. get ready for vice-president elect romney.
wow.

Fascinating little rant, but I don't want the Vice President's office to be run by a team who, even with every imaginable advantage, can't win. Mr. Obama's choice is just that, HIS, but I think the independents who will decide this election would have a negative response to his naming a VP who's own campaign became such a disjointed spectacle.

You think that Obama is so weak that he cannot overcome Bill Clinton? What is the deal with this Obama guy..is he that much of a puppet? Why is it that everyone has to protect him from Bill this and Bill that? I think that Obama either has cajones or he doesn't and whether Bill is there or not should make little difference. I think that the party is afraid of Obama being weak or appearing weak because, darn it, he is. He is a weak, slow-to-respond, awkward (except with teleprompter) candidate that will have continued trouble because he cannot take criticism and he has done so much to hide who he really is. What a shame for Hillary, the only candidate who has guts in this race.

Not reading any posts before putting this in . I want these Dems to counter this stupidity of the SURGE working and trying to take Iraq off the table. A SURGE is a short burst of power. What we have turned out to be a military plan that is a year old and still adapting. That is not a surge.

Being a woman of color who lives in the state of Virginia and voted for Mark Warner, I tell you this is a wise decision. Mark Warner left the office of governor with 70-80% approval rating and is highly regarded by Republicans, some of whom are making a push of campaigning for the former governor. I love diversity like anyone, but this is wise planning because some Virginian republicans will watch the convention just to see Mark Warner speak.

Great choice (of course, I could be a little biased as I reside in VA)...however I can say in all truthfulness that when Mark Warner was Gov. here...he almost single-handedly turned VA's economic situation around 360 degrees (leaving us in the black when he left office) which was a far, far cry from how he had recieved it (in a deficit) from a very unpopular Rethuglican governor, Jim Gilmore.
