HONOLULU — Barack Obama chose Mark Warner, Virginia's Senate candidate and former governor, to deliver the keynote address at the Democratic convention, underscoring Democrats' all-out effort to win the Southern state for the first time since 1964.

The move announced Wednesday also raises questions about the prospects of Obama choosing Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine as his running mate.

Warner is to speak on Aug. 26, the second day of the convention in Denver, while the yet-to-be-named vice presidential nominee is slated to address delegates a day later on Aug. 27.

Kaine is among a handful of Democrats said to be under serious consideration for the No. 2 spot.

Would the Illinois senator devote two major prime-time national addresses to politicians from the same state?

It's possible, given the attention Obama already is lavishing on the state.

He has visited Virginia a couple of times at least since wrapping up the nomination and is pouring money and manpower into it. Democrats consider the state the most promising as they seek victory in Southern and Western states that George W. Bush won in the last two elections and that Republicans have held for decades.

At the very least, placing Warner in the national spotlight could help boost his own Senate campaign; he is trying to succeed retiring Republican John Warner and give Democrats a hold on both of the state's seats.

Story continues below

The keynote address is a plum speaking spot that often is a springboard to national prominence. Obama, then a Senate candidate from Illinois, delivered it four years ago and began a rise in national politics expected to reach the Democratic nomination for president.

Obama's campaign called Warner an innovative businessman and bipartisan leader, fitting for the evening's theme of economic opportunity.

"Like Barack Obama, Mark Warner is not afraid to challenge the status quo to bring people together and get things moving," campaign manager David Plouffe said in a statement. "It's that kind of spirit and innovation that resulted in his selection as keynote speaker on a night when we will be discussing how to renew America's promise."

Warner, a businessman who became wealthy from work and investments in the cellular telephone industry, ran an exploratory campaign for the 2008 presidential nomination early in the race. He surprised many Democrats when he ultimately decided against running, saying he didn't want to put the demands of a national run on his family. There was talk he might be a good running mate pick for Obama, but he removed himself from consideration, saying he would only pursue the Senate seat.

Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, Obama's rival during the presidential primaries, is also scheduled to speak Aug. 26, an indication that Obama probably won't ask her to join the Democratic ticket.

Some news reports had incorrectly said Clinton would be the keynote speaker _ although the convention committee and campaign always described her as the Tuesday "headliner." Clinton and Obama advisers have been in delicate negotiations over her role at the convention, with some of her supporters calling for her name to be put in nomination because of her strong second-place showing.

Giving Warner the prime role could be viewed as a slight to some of those supporters as the Obama campaign is working to build unity going into the fall election. But Sam Arora, a former Clinton staffer who co-founded a group, VoteBoth.com, that encouraged Obama to pick Clinton as his running mate, said Warner was a good choice.

"Mark Warner is the future of the Democratic Party, and putting him on Tuesday night with Hillary Clinton is exactly right move for Obama," said Arora, who shut down the VoteBoth.com effort two weeks ago under the assumption that Clinton would not be picked. "They highlight Senator Obama's vision and leadership qualities."

A Clinton spokesman did not respond to a message for comment.

In an effort to reach out to anti-abortion Democrats, Obama gave Sen. Bob Casey of Pennsylvania, long an opponent of abortion, a speaking role the same Tuesday night that Warner and Clinton were to address delegates.

Casey is the son of the late Pennsylvania Gov. Robert P. Casey, who was not given a marquee speaking spot at the 1992 convention because of his anti-abortion views. Bob Casey endorsed Obama over Clinton in his state's primary.

Good choice.

I don't think Obama's going to choose a VP who will help him carry a particular state. That's a conventional wisdom strategy that pundits love, but it almost always fails.

Much like Queen Hillary, the Clintonistas will exhibit horrid management skills, and an inability to make executive decisions, thus sinking their campaign. The only thing they will exceed at is showing how negative and full of bile and hatred at the world they can be.

Birds of a feather, and all, you know, Clintonista?

Did anyone notice that when GWB was on his way to his inauguration in 01 that his motorcade drove through a screaming downpour and the streets were lined with protesters? It was the most oppressive image I've seen in American politics. The liberals must have prayed for that one!

That's the way to go, Obama !!! Surround Hillary with the NEW generation and make her unimportant.

Now, put Gore on ,with his ability to give a barn burner , the night of Bill and make him unimportant. Except if you make him put your name in nomination.

I'm thoroughly sick of the Clintons and I really do not care whether they speak or not. But if they are holding Obama for ransom, then surround them with better speakers.

Go Obama!!

That way, like defining "is" for the record, she hopes to minimize words flowing from her own mouth to be thrown back in her face in the future. A bit too late , and there is little chance of closing the C's stable door but someone should corral them for sure and advise them they are truly losing more than they think possible to be gained !!! Dowd's wrong. The voters aren't having any buyer's remorse about Obama at all.

Some of us want a more hard-hitting and more focused criticism of McCain = Bush. That does NOT mean an opening for Hillary.

I do worry a bit about Bill speaking at the convention. That seems a bit TOO gracious, imo. But at least Obama always takes the high road, always tries to bring people together.

I wish I could say the same about Bill and Hillary--but I can't. I'm hoping Hillary, at least, will acquit herself admirably in the weeks to come. She's certainly proven more capable of it than Bill.

While MoDo did nail the Clinntons, she is utterly wrong about the so-called "buyer's remorse."

But she thinks of herself as too cute by half, and she'd rather be snarky than correct.

It's imprudent to "read the tea leaves" with any great degree of accuracy; however, the choice of Warner as keynoter suggests that his fellow Virginian (Kaine) will not be the choice for Veep because it wouldn't make much sense to have 2 leaders from the same state making key speeches at the Convention.

I was listening to my local lefty radio station on my way to work yesterday, and the DJ was talking to a bigwig at the DNC. The topic turned to the VP and the Obama campaign's clever use of texting to announce the choice. Sure, I signed up. Anyway, after a vow of total secrecy, the DJ got texted the choice.

"Whoa!! Bold!!!" was the reaction. Any ideas on a "bold" choice? Hagel?

No one has been texted the choice.

No one outside the top levels of the campaign knows who it will be.

Hagel is a very unlikely choice---except for his position on Iraq, he is a far-right conservative whose positions are 180 degrees from O's.

I am rooting for Biden...He's smart, tough and will beat any Repub VP selection in debate into the asphalt. He may be Washington, but he's also a traditional Democrate with our values and heart. His first wife and daughter was killed in a car accident..he was left with his two sons..he went hiome each night to be with his sons and tuck them in. That tells me something about his values and strength.

I know Biden maybe a long shot because he is not the picture of change...but having an open and honest VP sure would be.

Yet, not keynote speakers! Michelle is Obama's wife and if recent history serves me correctly that is a BIG liability for her. I mean, what has she done on her own....? Spkr Pelosi is not a new face, and is not going anywhere else in the party than where she already is. Sen. Clinton, also not a new face and based on how the DNC handled the primary campaign, she's probably not going anywhere else in the party than where she already is. In 2004 Obama was given a unique platform for a complete nobody. He was primed, fostered and mentored by the national powers-that-be without which help he would not be where he is today. If the Democratic Party wants to get serious about being the party of change, they should have done the same for some woman this year. I cannot believe that there is no woman anywhere in this country who has the same potential that Obama had in 2004. That's what I'm saying.

I am female, married,, 4 children, 5 grandschildren, have a faith base and I lived through the women's rights/liberation times..and I not only applaud it, I was there as a three year old before some of them were borh. It frosted me even in my childhood that "boys had all the fun" and led everything....BUT I don't begrudge Obama the candiacey nor do I worry too much him selecting a male to do some of the bidding. Myabe he will surprise YOU...maybe there is a woman there. So far the females in big places haven't done too well. Condi, Nancy, Feinstein and unfortunately Hilary. . Chonologically I am one of "those" that they talk about all the time NOT taking to Obama and granted it took the race speech to get me there, but mentally /emotionally/socially I am much younger. So don't speak for all women. We don't KNOW yet who the vp is, do we? I am sorry that there isn't more actuality, but what I really want is a CHANGE OF DIRECTION! Truly, having a half Af-Am running for office IS a change of face/pace. However, I do believe very strongly that if women had a larger place in the world we would not constantly be warring, thumping our chests, waving the flag for everything or rattling our sabers.

You don't get my point. My comment wasn't about Obama, it was about the Democratic Party in general and their lip service to inclusion. Actions really do speak louder than words and in this case, following on a national display of the problems this country still has with gender they could've done something that would've shown their commitment to making changes there. They did not, and that is what I was commenting on.

See, the keynote speaker is not just another speaker in terms of the overall scheme of things. It's taken as the platform for the up-and-comers, such as was Obama in 2004. For instance, McCaskill could've been put into that format instead of somewhere else and then her placement on the agenda would've taken on a different meaning. Or, some other woman somewhere in the country could've been identified as being that up-and-comer. Frankly, it's not the quantity it's the quality. So, I'd rather have fewer women if it meant putting someone into a position of being the next Big Thing.

75,000 seats have not sold out...you must do 6 hours of volunteer service to his campaign to have tickets.

and show some respect, its Senator Clinton, and use spell check, your education is showing, or should I say lack of education.

The thing about O is that he can speak for a very long time saying nothing of substance and no matter who you are or what you believe you come away thinking he agrees with you.

Almost like he's speaking in tongues.

His speeches are full of this and thats and on the other hands and they end with no definitive positions.

That way he can always later point to a quote of his that will appeal to whatever group he's talking to.

I always thought Hillary and Bill were good at that but this guy is the master.

Did you see JM try to answer a two part question the other day? He forgot the first part halfway through the second part. The reporter had to repeat the first part without adding the second so he wouldn't confuse the old man again. And then JM couldn't answer it anyway! It's like talking to your crazy grandfather in the nursing home. You go for a visit hoping he's cogent that day. Maybe yes, maybe no.

I was at a Mc-Cain townhall.
They did ...
The Pledge of Allegiance without being shamed into it.
The National Anthem.
Even Proud to be an American.
There were lots of veterans and you can tell Mc-Cain has a real bond with them.
Really patriotic and pro-American events.

You know, the stuff you hate.

On the other hand, sometimes even there they have whiny people asking what the government is going to do for them.
You know, the stuff you love.

Something for everybody.

Your point? You might want to check that vet statement. Some have a real issue with him because of his lack of voting support for their issues. I guess your point is that you are more patriotic than the rest of us. I guess your point is that you love America more. You support our troops, but you want them to fight endless wars for oil. You were probably a champion of the war in Iraq. You know the war they lied to us about to drum up support for an illegal invasion of a sovereign country.

McCain "Town Halls" are full of ritual, symbolism, costumes, and pre-screened audiences, doing the things that look good without actually having to push for stuff that might make them part with their money. You know, the stuff they hate.

Naturally McCain has a bond with them...there are no challenges, no uncomfortable questions, (especially those that might confuse him) and they give him lots of opportunities to blather on and on about what a BRAVE boy he was 30 years ago.

But we won't mention what a Bad boy he was 30 years ago when he dumped his crippled wife for a rich, young, blonde, married woman. Gosh no.

Didn't the GOP run that flag waving pledge of allegiance B.S. against Dukakis 20 years ago? Geez guys, come up with a new strategy.

The ONE will lead us to salvation, through a blend of Liberation Theology and Policy Avoidance.

I hope he is fudging about not wanting to surrender Iraq, though. We need out of there pronto!

BHO '08!!

I don't get it...don't you right-wingers have a site you communicate with one another on? Like the White supremist.com or something?
