Japanese swimmer Kosuke Kitajima and Chinese gymnast Yang Wei led a golden day for Asia on Thursday that showcased the continent's growing sports might.

Kitajima, Asia's greatest swimmer, stole the spotlight from Michael Phelps with an unprecedented "double-double" in the Olympics breaststroke, adding the 200 meters gold to earlier victory in the 100, after wins in both events in Athens 2004.

Phelps has dominated the olympics and you will see the same type of domination in denver where hrc will dominate O and take home the gold for the democratic party, I am not surprised to see how easy it was for her to make the conventions hers, that should scare O supporters because other world leaders would brush O aside just as easy as hrc has.

Why so many damn swimming events? No wonder Phelps can win so many golds. We have the 1000m, 1000m medly, 1001m medley, 1200m freestyle, relays, and on and on. It's goofy.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 10:41 AM on 08/14/2008

So you think there are too many track events also?

The reason there are so many is that there are so many different strokes.

If you want to complain, complain about how the basketball gold will only count as one medal (of course it has to, but it's still dumb for a team sport to be so insignificant.)

If it weren't for swimming, the US would only have 5 gold medals. Remember, Phelps has 5 gold medals alone.

The tally will be lot closer at the end but I remember the days of the Soviets and Est Germans - U.S. if I recall right used to come in second and third always. You cannot compete with a state sponsored program using government money. Do we want that in the US??

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 10:36 AM on 08/14/2008

You're exactly right. Of course a country that hand picks children and enrolls them in government sponsored athletic camps for a majority of their childhood is going to do better. (Not to mention China has so many more people to pick from in the first place).

We proudly took second place when the Soviets were at their peak. We can do it again. Freedom is more important than winning medals.

Even better: China's state sponsored sports machine that's rolling over us is bankrolled by ... wait for it ... us! $1.2 trillion U.S. in the central bank.

So, how's that business strategy of farming all our manufacturing overseas going again?

The home team usually wins more medals than usual. That's how it should be.

(I am in no way implying that they don't deserve it.)

Money and incentives have to come from somewhere. In the US athletes make a ton in corporate sponsorship, so naturally the kids' parents want to push the kids to achieve athletic greatness. In most other countries that is not the case.

Why the headline that seems to almost glory in the fact the the United States is behind in gold medals? There MUST be hundreds of other ways to report the imperical facts without looking so anti-U.S. Of course as this IS the U.S., Huffpo can put up pretty much any headline it likes. But it does seem to me that whenever the U.S. looks bad or is embarrassed, Huffpo and many of its bloggers take at least a modicum of delight in it. I'm not a "America, love it or leave it" guy, but it would be nice to see more on the post that talks of some of the great qualities about this country. There are quite a lot.

That having been said, GO CHINA!!! BEAT THE U.S.!!! That should keep me a blogger in good standing...

The two numbers are, I believe, part of a larger psychology. Thus the longer-winded response.

Your point being? Sorry my spelling was not up to snuff for you 2grainsofsalt. That OF COURSE must mean that my point is worthless. Just like your use of all lower case letters must mean that you are weak and ineffectual, thus you are of little use to me or anyone else here.

NEXT!!!

Think of it this way. If you were in a long-distance race, and you were either losing ground or had fallen behind, would it be better to hear the truth, or "Yay Johnny, you're the best and you're always gonna be da best."

That's the problem with jingoism.

Lots of jingoism from the mediabot.

Seems to me that noting the medal count with the countries names next to it, you know:
"China 22... America 10" is about as objective as you can write. And how does the subtitle "China leads US Golds by more than half" sound anti-American? Also seems incredibly objective.

How do suggest it to read?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 10:59 AM on 08/14/2008

I'm not sure why this is a headline unless it is to bash the country (which in my opinion is typical of HuffPo). Any true follower of Olympic sports knows that once Track and Field begins, we will begin to dominate the medal counts. Also, with our excellence in team sports, those medals should start to flow once those competitions reach the medal rounds .

To be honest, we've done pretty good early on given the types of sports that have been conducted...not a lot of upsets and a few nice surprises (fencing, shooting, women's biking).

It's just a running total. I'm not sure it's a conspiracy.

We can count at the end, too :)

Don't you see? If you point out that the US has less medals, it means they will continue to get less medals. And then the terrorists have won.

We Americans would be better off if we focused our extreme nationalism on how we can bring our lost jobs back from Communist China not on how we can beat them in sports . Our American companies have sold us out for cheap labor and the lack of any sort of enviromental or safety laws in Communist China.

BUY MADE IN USA!

Not a bad idea. All we have to do is convince people to take a HUGE pay cut and businesses will move back here. Of course that will mean that these people will not be able to afford basic things like food, healthcare, etc...

It's an odd mix of unrestrained capitalism meets police-state communism. It's a race to the bottom for all. Except for the "haves" that is.

That doesn't work either, despite what Lou Dobbs thinks.

Remember Chrysler and "Buy American"?

Some parts and materials came from Canada, some from China, some from other places in the world (including the US) and the car was assembled in Mexico.

I don't worry too much about supporting international companies exploiting labor laws abroad and the consumer at home.

"Mom and Pop" stores, though? Sure.

China has 1,3 Billion potential Athletes, America has 300 Million potential Athletes, Germany has 80 Million potential Athletes.

That means China won a gold medal for every 60.000.000th citizen, the USA won gold for every 30.000.000th citizen, Germany won a gold medal for every 13.000.000th citizen.

Look at it the other way... ;)

Oh my god, Oh my god, I feel like I am going to soil myself. China is beating us in golds!!! Why does god hate the USA? Why are our athletes traitors?

I wait every four years for this. I cannot eat or sleep until I have seen the medal count on TV or in the newspaper. (Of course, I rarely go hungry since the American media has agreed that the medal count is paramount at these times.)

The gall of those pathetic, third-world countries trying to beat our good, upright American boys and girls. God gave sports to America! So what if we're the third largest country in the world by population (and can thus draw from a larger pool of athletes)? So what if we are the wealthiest country and can afford expensive training facilities and science-guided nutrition and exercise regimens? We deserve those medals! We're Americans! Our flag is better, our anthem is better ... why can't the rest of the world see that and just give up already?

USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USE, USA, USA, UMA, USA, USA, URGH, USA, USA, USA, USA !!!!!!

LOL, got to hand it to Huffpost.......point out the gold total but don't bring up the fact that the TOTAL medal count difference is ONE.

China 35 total
USA 34 total

Throw some other facts out there. For example, they were talking about one gymnast that was taken from her home at age 3 and gets to visit her home once a year. She tried to leave but her parents wouldn't let her come home, said it was better for the "state" and would elevate her family. Oh and she's now "20" because at the last games she was "16". If 4 of those girls are 16 then I'm 116.

When track and field starts will we see big headlines then?
