Japanese swimmer Kosuke Kitajima and Chinese gymnast Yang Wei led a golden day for Asia on Thursday that showcased the continent's growing sports might.

Kitajima, Asia's greatest swimmer, stole the spotlight from Michael Phelps with an unprecedented "double-double" in the Olympics breaststroke, adding the 200 meters gold to earlier victory in the 100, after wins in both events in Athens 2004.

Mac should be given a gold medal for the way he has handled the Georgian conflict, he has made the USA proud while the other candidate has shown again he is not ready to be president, but Hill is.

Maybe she could be his VP. Except she's pro-choice. Oh, well.

Hil already realizes that Bar-ry can't close the deal. No way she would accept an offer to be the VP.

She and Bil-l already have two nights of Bar-ry's convention. He's going to get punked. A putsch is in the works. If she can't get the nomination this year, she'll make sure he doesn't win so that the field is clear for 2012.

If it's won or lost on the clock the U.S. does extremely well, if it is judged by capricious panels of judges the U.S. tends to be handicapped. It has been ever thus....

OK, so China won the following gold medals to date: 6 in weightlifting -no judges; 1 in archery -no judges; 1 in fencing -no judges; 2 in judo -judged; 4 in shooting -no judges; 1 in swimming -no judges; 4 in diving (judges... but anyone with eyes can see they are VASTLY superior to the rest of the world); and 3 in gymnastics (ditto my last comment about diving).....
Sounds like NecreousImprimatur is a sore loser. Boo hoo... if the US loses there MUST be foul play --the flip side of which is: Let's just give every American athlete a gold medal because if they don't win one in competition, they was ROBBED!

The medals were made in China so it is only right that they have the most gold ones.

Ah, the Neo-Cons. Always ready to insult America by insinuating that it is a dainty, weak, fragile little country that can't withstand critique. Clenbuterol, why do you hate America so much?

Imperical observation of raw data is "bashing"?

Perhaps you'd be more comfortable if you drew a warm salt water bath, turned out the lights and put Reagan's "City on the Hill" speach playing on a continuous loop.

Go find yourself a little neo-con happy-place and leave the real world to those of us who can balance the seemingly paradoxical impulses to both love the country where we live and seek to improve it.

I don't know anything about sports. I do like numbers, though.

Does it bother fans that the athletes appear so, um, enhanced? Not any particular countries athletes either.

It makes records a little suspect, right? It's sort of ruined baseball for me. I wasn't a huge fan, but the numbers part was appealing.

Aren't you comparing apples and oranges? Athletes and....enhanced athletes?

On the headline where it says 22- China, 10- America are you counting the medals from all over America, such as from Brazil, Canada, Mexico, Panama, Argentina, etc etc or just counting the medals of the United States. Remember we that live in the USofA aren't the only Americans.

Although "Americans" can indeed refer to all peoples of the Americas, "America" never means anything other than the USA. You're being fussy over nothing; this headline is correct.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 10:01 AM on 08/14/2008

yes, i can assure you that Brazilians, Canadians and Argentinians do not think of themselves as Americans. it's actually a bit of a dirty word to anybody not from there.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 10:12 AM on 08/14/2008

Typical.

Why is this story the headline on the HuffPo, a political website?

Because it is representative of the politics of the HuffPo demographic. They take great pleasure anytime America gets its comeuppance.

Ask yourself whether the HuffPo would breathlessly report US 22 - China 10? No, that would be unseemly boosterism and would be greatly frowned on.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 09:42 AM on 08/14/2008

Ah yes, more jingoistic talking points. I would love to read a headline that was reversed, and I'm sure most of the readers on here would agree. Democrats love our country. That's why we want it to be the best it can be.

I tend to agree with your statement SweetSydney. That was the first thing that struck me about the headline. There are a number of different ways to state that China is leading in medals and not have it look so anti-U.S. My theory as to why there are those who trend towards, what at least appears to be, anti-U.S. sentiments, comes about when the myths we were all taught about the U.S. are shattered. That can tend to make people cynical and more than a just a little bitter. I know that was the way that I and others I knew felt and acted for a time. I moved beyond it for the most part. However, it's just a partial hypothesis and not a total explanation.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 10:16 AM on 08/14/2008

First of all, they are reprinting a feed from the Reuter's news bureau. Secondly, it is political. It is world politics, because there is a debate about whether or not the highest tally of golds is the "winner" or the highest number of total medals. In total medals, the US is way ahead. Not that it matters to me, but it is China that is stirring the pot on this particular debate, as well as the debate about their gymnasts' ages.

And, yes, HuffPost would report US 22-China 10. And where in this article is anything reported "breathlessly?"

Those of us in the HuffPo demographic are the true patriots because we love our country and dare to criticize in order to make it better. We don't just lie on the ground like sheep and accept the status quo.

Please go back in your cave.
