Japanese swimmer Kosuke Kitajima and Chinese gymnast Yang Wei led a golden day for Asia on Thursday that showcased the continent's growing sports might.

Kitajima, Asia's greatest swimmer, stole the spotlight from Michael Phelps with an unprecedented "double-double" in the Olympics breaststroke, adding the 200 meters gold to earlier victory in the 100, after wins in both events in Athens 2004.

You are correct..........and why such a big headline when another country is ahead of the US. Oh, I guess its PC to be for anybody but the US.

Track and Field will change everything. Go America!

You forget the US is going to get schooled in ping pong, badminton and darts.

This upsets me terribly. How will we live?

If you take population in consideration, a lot of European countries have more medals per citizen than the US (Germany and Italy have 6 golds each right now. Their combined population is less than half that of the US...) Right, that argument can only be used to downplay China's medals...

Oh shut up. We are one nation. You argument is so dumb.

If you want to look at a medals/population ratio Australians beat Europeans quiet handily

The Beijing Olympics has offered a worldwide audience a glimpse of the immediate future. The 21st century, heralded as the American Century, will be dominated China. And the world will benefit from the passing of the torch.

Yeah, cheap labor, political-prisoner labor, pollution, etc.......You say the world will benefit (LOL)

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 09:33 AM on 08/14/2008

The "American Century" referred to the 20th Century.

It is China's turn, of course, and everyone except you knows both of these things.

Try not to use words like "opine" and "heralded" to try to impress people when you don't have a thing to say that any toddler doesn't already know.

Wow, 2 - 1! There's no historical reference for this, is there? Oh, that's right, 2004, sorry.

Is it really necessary to cover the olympics here? I mean there are so many other places people can go for this.

It is simply refreshing to see adults (sans the chinese women gymnasts who are clearly about 10-14 years old and not 16yo) competing behaving with class and decorum.

Now if only the republicans, fox news, McCain could learn from the athletes.

Fun to see white conservative "patriots" with their undies twisted in a bunch, humiliated by a "godless" nation of non-whites. Any sane American, OTOH, knows that jingoism is idiotic and the olympics should be about the athletes and their accomplishments and not the goons who exploit them for political or monetary gains...

For everyone who thinks this a catastrophe (which I don't), this will change next week. The US is strongly favored in the track and field events, which are scheduled for next week. China is weak in this area. Anyways, I think the US team is doing great.

I was surfing Chinese websites yesterday and they are doing the medal count based on Gold. Of course yahoo is doing based on total medals. Interesting how perspective changes results.

Communism? What part of PRIVATE SECTOR can't you understand? China is not a communist country. Neither is Russia.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 09:32 AM on 08/14/2008

Private Sector? What private sector? In Russian and China goverment has power to take away any property including publicly traded companies. Both of them had excersised this power.

"China Leads Us Golds By More Than Half"

Whoever posted this on Huff should be ashamed. Not only you picked the only statistic where China has a big lead(total medals it is 35 for China vs 34 for US), but you made it sound as if you happy about it... the article itself is not focused on US vs. China at all, so why would you pick the worst statistic and make it the title?

I have always believed that both sides love this country. Liberals and conservatives may disagree what is in the best interest of the country or how to achieve the goal, but they do love this country. I think whoever posted this title on Huff should remember that most of the people on both sides are cheering for US.

maybe the person who posted this is happy to see china do so well in this historic event

it is good for everyone that china is doing well

In the years down the road, people will remember the Beijing Olympics for the American Michael Phelps, his many gold medals, and that breathtaking 4x100 relay. And not that China managed to get more gold medals.

One has to take into account the population difference... but also what about the fact that these Chinese athletes may have been trained to the max to prepare for these games, or that when competing they are absolutely jacked playing in front of their country. It's not to say any other country's athletes are not trying, but it is a different element for the Chinese athletes that is hard to translate to foreign competitors.

"One has to take into account the population difference..."

But only if it suits your jingoism... If, OTOH, by using the very same standard a country like Germany or Korea gets more medals per citizen than team USA, then of course it makes absolutely no sense...
