SEE EVIDENCE THAT CHINESE GYMNAST HE KEXIN IS UNDERAGE

Read the AP's report below:
Just nine months before the Beijing Olympics, the Chinese government's news agency, Xinhua, reported that gymnast He Kexin was 13, which would have made her ineligible to be on the team that won a gold medal this week.

In its report Nov. 3, Xinhua identified He as one of "10 big new stars" who made a splash at China's Cities Games. It gave her age as 13 and reported that she beat Yang Yilin on the uneven bars at those games. In the final, "this little girl" pulled off a difficult release move on the bars known as the Li Na, named for another Chinese gymnast, Xinhua said in the report, which appeared on one of its Web sites, http://www.hb.xinhuanet.com

The Associated Press found the Xinhua report on the site Thursday morning and saved a copy of the page. Later that afternoon, the Web site was still working but the page was no longer accessible. Sports editors at the state-run news agency would not comment for publication.

If the age reported by Xinhua was correct, that would have meant He was too young to be on the Chinese team that beat the United States on Wednesday and clinched China's first women's team Olympic gold in gymnastics. He is also a favorite for gold in Monday's uneven bars final.

Yang was also on Wednesday's winning team. Questions have also been raised about her age and that of a third team member, Jiang Yuyuan.

Gymnasts have to be 16 during the Olympic year to be eligible for the games. He's birthday is listed as Jan. 1, 1992.

Chinese authorities insist that all three are old enough to compete. He herself told reporters after Wednesday's final that "my real age is 16. I don't pay any attention to what everyone says."

Zhang Hongliang, an official with China's gymnastics delegation at the games, said Thursday the differing ages which have appeared in Chinese media reports had not been checked in advance with the gymnastics federation.

"It's definitely a mistake," Zhang said of the Xinhua report, speaking in a telephone interview. "Never has any media outlet called me to check the athletes' ages."

Asked whether the federation had changed their ages to make them eligible, Zhang said: "We are a sports department. How would we have the ability to do that?"

"We already explained this very clearly. There's no need to discuss this thing again."

The International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) has said repeatedly that a passport is the "accepted proof of a gymnast's eligibility," and that He and China's other gymnasts have presented ones that show they are age eligible. The IOC also checked the girls' passports and deemed them valid.

A May 23 story in the China Daily newspaper, the official English-language paper of the Chinese government, said He was 14. The story was later corrected to list her as 16.

"This is not a USAG issue," said Steve Penny, president of USA Gymnastics. "The FIG and the IOC are the proper bodies to handle this."

Congratulations. American girls Nastia Liukin, Shawn Johnson won gold and silver in gymnastics with the individual all-around!! They did a superb job and also cheered by the local audience. Happy evening for all of you here, I hope!

Of course you don't hear any of the commentators talking about this due to China censoring information. Disgusting!!

If you include the NBC TV coverage, I've heard Bela Karolyi commenting about the Chinese ages over the past few days. No real investigation is offered, however.

Apparently, each sport may set its own age minimum for the olympics. In olympic gymnastics, 16 is currently mandated by whoever oversees that sport. And 16 applies only in certain international events. In other events, very young girls may compete. I suppose this is why they show up at the olympics.

Last December, reports appeared that the international gymnastics folks were thinking of setting 16 as the minimum for all events, beginning after the olympics.

honestly, it's kinda funny that they're using younger girls. i would think they're at a disadvantage using the younger girls. the extra 1 or 2 yrs would have given the of-age girls a bit more experience yet the younger girls are kickin butt out there.

i feel like even if china wins with proven underage girls and the IOC strips their medals, what kind of honor will the 2nd place winners have in getting gold? it would seem like a buncha high school team beating a professional team in basketball. i guess i don't know gymnastics enough to see the benefit or advantage of using under-age girls over of-age girls outside of the fact that they're just better at it.

Younger generally means smaller and lighter, which is a considerable advantage in flinging oneself about on beams, bars, vaulting tables, and floor mats. But it wasn't enough to vanquish Nastia Liukin and Shawn Johnson on Friday morning.

I noted at least one 14-year-old competing in synchronized diving, so apparently body mass isn't considered as significant there.

There is definitely a dollar value in winning gold. Michael Phelps has been paid millions over the past several years for what he's already accomplished and stands to rake in many more, starting next week after he's smashed eight world records. As far as I know, silver medals and a dollar or two will get you a cup of coffee.

What's "out of w[h]ack" is determined by commercial considerations, and apparently athletic accomplishment is worth a lot in those terms.

In swimming, going too young won't help you.

In gymnastics, however, age is a giant advantage both physically and psychologically.

Thats why the limit is 16, not 13 or 14.

I hear everyone from all angles on every topic but when will everyone start pitching in to do something? We talk about who's cheat'n who but we don't want to talk about Who's taken care of what I find that just as bad for the kids all the way around . If we're the one's buying tickets for this stuff ,then shouldn't we say something about how our kids are being treated...let alone someone else's kid? I'd save a chinese girl from over doing it in the olympics cause they'd be too young. I'd then scold her country and her parents for letting such a child as young as that to do that type of compettition...Unless you guys are hot on kids hurting themselves in the olympics. We don't have any decency or respect for anyone anymore nor do I see any respect for one's self for watching stuff that kids shouldnt be doing if they're so young. It's just as bad as pronography.

Somehow, this earnest desire of the Chinese Government to portray the Chinese people as the near-perfect human beings is transparent and is an insult to every Chinese person, as it strips them of their humanity, of their struggles and of their achievements and renders it in terms of miracles and inevitable racial development.

Why would they deprive a 13-year old of his adolescence, and set him up to be a fraudster? Is that what they expect the Chinese people to do to fulfill the "Ode to the Motherland" sung by a good voice, and mimed (with or without the knowledge) of a "cutie"?

This is not the spirit of the Olympics.... But I suppose we killed it long ago, by injecting big business and our discredited Coca Cola culture.

The age rules are in place because of the risk of serious and permanent injury to the younger girls. The rules are for THEIR protection. Their bones, tendons and muscles are not mature enough to handle the rigorous training and competition.

Also, in women's gymnastics, the younger competitors have the unfair advantage. As a girl's body changes, certain gymnastics skills become more difficult. It's just the opposite for the male gymnasts which is why you'll rarely see a world class male gymnast under the age of about 18-20.

If the Chinese cheated, which really isn't an "if," they should be punished. Not just because of the infringement of the rules, but because they put winning over the safety of those very underaged young girls. They can put all the eyeshadow and glitter in the world on them, but they can't change their bone structure.

This all is probably true but the argument is reduntant at this point....they have their gold medals. And as for cheating, there is LOTS of it going on in the Olympics, not just the Chinese gymnastics team. I think they should just stop having them all together. Any time someone wins I always think "how long until we find out they cheated". The emphasis placed on the importants of winning a gold is way out of wack and in the grand scheme of things it means very little. They have put a dollar value on winning (particularly in the west) and that's caused such problems. Greed has ruined the spirit of these games.

Gold medals are rescinded for drugs, they can be rescinded for age or any other disqualifying factor.

Although it may not be the greatest idea...in certain areas, it's still expected of young women to commit suicide if they bring dishonor upon their fathers (which includes the goverment). That, or future troubles and familial or illegal government punishment, would endanger the gymnasts more immediately than any punishing athleticism.

If this were the US some enterprising reporter would have dug up the source documents or enticed the people responsible to become sources.

Of course I have no doubt that China can and would use government powers to cheat. You remember the women's swim teams from the early 90's?

Little things like this remind us why civil rights like freedom of the press are important.

This is outrageous. The IOC needs to investigate promptly. I don't care what are you're allowed to compete, but everyone needs to play by the rules or there's no honor or integrity left in the Olympics anymore (and there was precious little left before Beijing). China has definitely shown the world its true face: autocratic hypocritical controlling freaks who will take advantage of children (even young singers - that was awful).

Is this where the word "bamboozled" comes from? If those little girls are all sixteen then life
expectancy in China must be in the 150+ range.

The MSM continues to spread hate against the Chinese during these Olympics. I for one, am a bit sick and tired of the disgraceful behavior of the American media.

When it comes to cheaters look no further than American track and field teams of our recent past. Why do American insist on casting doubt and putting forth accusations without credible evidence? This, of course, from a country that has zero standing in the world when it come to upright behavior.

I suppose the big bad bully is not enjoying getting its teeth knocked it.

No problem, just strip them of their medals like they do anyone that has cheated.

No double standard, fairness rules, correct?

You DID read the article correct?

Are you serious? Get out of that cave in Afghanistan. The air pollution, the Tibet, the constant petards thrown at Chinese leadership, the criticisms of the inauguration ceremonies, the criticisms of the Chinese diet, and the most recent....the gold medals have lead in them. It wreaks of sour grapes and jealousy.

Who cares of the age. All those who are calling 'foul' are that who either A. Could/did not get away with this or something like it or B. Didn't think of it. It goes with the old say, "If your not cheating your not trying". Suck on a lemon if you don't like it.

The only thing that I don't like about having no age limit is the potential to abuse the very young. This seems to happen anyway so? Granted, there are reports that their athletes will be treated well financially but wouldn't it be interesting to check back with these young people in five and ten years? What family in an environment where baby girls are not wanted, wouldn't jump for joy to have them given a chance to live even if they were put into a training machine for the Olympics? Very confusing problem and both sides of the issue have things that I don't like. At least these young people have a future. How many baby girls in the world do not?

They are taken away from their families at age 3. They then get to see their Mommy or Daddy maybe once a year. Are those the family values you repigs are always talking about?

I have voted straight dem in more elections then you probably have years in your age. Saying that I can see all sides of this and I am not happy with what I see is definitely not a reep characteristic. Your ego is running away with you so keep it to yourself.

One solution is for people everywhere to STOP watching this sick abuse of little girls disguised as "sport."

It's a shame that NBC keeps flipping back and forth between the swimming and the gymnastics. It's hard enough to keep the commercials muted. (and yes, I know I need a TIVO.)

You're wrong . . . it would be completely normal for the "tweens" to be able to perform certain stunts better than the older girls/women. Women gymnasts have more difficulty the older they are . . . men gymnasts are just the opposite. That's one of the reasons that what the Chinese did was wrong . . . the other is that they put these young girls' personal well-being at greater risk for injury.
