SEE EVIDENCE THAT CHINESE GYMNAST HE KEXIN IS UNDERAGE

Read the AP's report below:
Just nine months before the Beijing Olympics, the Chinese government's news agency, Xinhua, reported that gymnast He Kexin was 13, which would have made her ineligible to be on the team that won a gold medal this week.

In its report Nov. 3, Xinhua identified He as one of "10 big new stars" who made a splash at China's Cities Games. It gave her age as 13 and reported that she beat Yang Yilin on the uneven bars at those games. In the final, "this little girl" pulled off a difficult release move on the bars known as the Li Na, named for another Chinese gymnast, Xinhua said in the report, which appeared on one of its Web sites, http://www.hb.xinhuanet.com

The Associated Press found the Xinhua report on the site Thursday morning and saved a copy of the page. Later that afternoon, the Web site was still working but the page was no longer accessible. Sports editors at the state-run news agency would not comment for publication.

If the age reported by Xinhua was correct, that would have meant He was too young to be on the Chinese team that beat the United States on Wednesday and clinched China's first women's team Olympic gold in gymnastics. He is also a favorite for gold in Monday's uneven bars final.

Yang was also on Wednesday's winning team. Questions have also been raised about her age and that of a third team member, Jiang Yuyuan.

Gymnasts have to be 16 during the Olympic year to be eligible for the games. He's birthday is listed as Jan. 1, 1992.

Chinese authorities insist that all three are old enough to compete. He herself told reporters after Wednesday's final that "my real age is 16. I don't pay any attention to what everyone says."

Zhang Hongliang, an official with China's gymnastics delegation at the games, said Thursday the differing ages which have appeared in Chinese media reports had not been checked in advance with the gymnastics federation.

"It's definitely a mistake," Zhang said of the Xinhua report, speaking in a telephone interview. "Never has any media outlet called me to check the athletes' ages."

Asked whether the federation had changed their ages to make them eligible, Zhang said: "We are a sports department. How would we have the ability to do that?"

"We already explained this very clearly. There's no need to discuss this thing again."

The International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) has said repeatedly that a passport is the "accepted proof of a gymnast's eligibility," and that He and China's other gymnasts have presented ones that show they are age eligible. The IOC also checked the girls' passports and deemed them valid.

A May 23 story in the China Daily newspaper, the official English-language paper of the Chinese government, said He was 14. The story was later corrected to list her as 16.

"This is not a USAG issue," said Steve Penny, president of USA Gymnastics. "The FIG and the IOC are the proper bodies to handle this."

Of course they're underage. How ridiculous. They cheated. Simple as that. It can't be any more ridiculously transparent. When you're younger and in a pre-pubescent stage it means you weight less. When you weigh less that means you have apply less force to keep yourself upright when doing these fancy tricks. But, I give it to the Chinese anyway. They fought well. There are obviously more important things than gymnastics.

The cover-up (and the attempts to do so) are sometimes laughable. My SO and I watched them the first day and commented on how young they looked etc. The next day my SO pointed out that they had issued them padded bras!

They should just do away with the age thing if it isn't enforced. It is a lot more difficult when your body is changing due to puberty due to the constant adjustments (weight distribution etc)

Of course when you are torn from your family at age 3, allowed one visit a year and can't leave the program (according to the "20" year old) then this program becomes your life.

The younger, smaller ones have a definite and decisive advantage when doing the floor gymnastics as they take smaller steps when somersaulting, etc. across the floor and are less likely to incur that .8 deduction for landing outside of the permitted zone. And conversely, I guess, It can also be argued they would be disadvantaged on the uneven bars as it is easier for the taller individuals to reach from one bar to the next. (But I believe the Chinese select the taller ones for that particular event, anyway, thereby negating the disadvantage.)

They ought to retire the age thing, as Bella suggested. Since forgery is bound to happen, may the best person win.

I agree. Maybe they are under age but this wasn't an issue until our girls didnt win the gold. I was a bit embarrassed by their sourpuss attitude on the podium. There is no shame in winning a silver medal. I think they were lucky to get that far.

Actually pointing out the obvious is not whining. Before I heard anyone talk about this very apparent cheating, I had already observed it myself.
The young women from America developmentally looked and produced like young women. Their physical development was in line with what norms are for that age around the world.
The little girls that China put forth were just that, little girls. Their physical development and female development was that of 8-12 year old "girls."
You can be quite short and still be developing as a female normally. As a short person of 5'2", I know that to be true. These little Chinese girls were not.
It was a disgusting display of state run cheating and I think the American young women should be very proud of where they medaled considering the obvious cheating by China. They had the advantage over America because of this, and our young women did extremely well in spite of it.

Let's not go after the unprovable. The passports were issued. The case is closed.

Let's do, however, go after facts on other lies and not let go -- human rights violations, civil rights violations. Geneva convention and helsinki accord conventions, right wing smearing of non-right wing patriots, etc. There is plenty to clean up here at home. Prepubescent gymnasts are but smoke and mirrors.....

Communists lying? NO! This can't be! Only rich republicans lie and light cigars with oil soaked $100 bills killing baby seals and melting the ice.

Who the F cares. If you can't beat a 13 yr old quit your bitchin'

They aren't Communists, they are capitalist to the core. Apparently you haven't been paying attention. Authoritarianism is NOT the same thing as Communism. Only the ignorant use them interchangeably.

Actually if this blogger and those that follow were informed by something other than their own bloviating they would know that according to the expert commentators on the networks these girls are systematically screened and trained at perhaps 3 years of age and also that when the female body reaches the age of puberty the physical changes it undergoes make it is less suited to performing the gymnastic feats of these events.

Try an 8-12 year old. That is quite a huge difference and an advantage.
