A 23-year-veteran of the Chicago Police Department died early Thursday after being shot during an apparent robbery attempt Wednesday in the West Side's Garfield Park neighborhood.
The off-duty police detective, identified by the Chicago Sun-Times as 49-year-old Robert Soto, was shot during an attempted robbery while sitting in an SUV with Kathryn Romberg, authorities said. Romberg was dead on the scene.
Police said the officer was pronounced dead at Mount Sinai Hospital at 3:05 a.m. Thursday. The Cook County Medical Examiner's office has not been notified of the death as of 3:30 a.m.
