He may have been joking;he likes a good joke-I read a story a while ago where (I think) he was getting a star on the Walk of Fame,and some of the McHale's Navy stars were there.Well, Borgnine's limo pulls up,and he comes out - being helped along,shaky,stooped over,looking bad.They grew concerned. A few more seconds of this feeble behavior,then he straightens up, gets that "Borgnine Look",and lets out one of his "Navy" bellows.
