Politico:

Top social conservative leaders in key battleground states are urging John McCain not to pick a running mate who supports abortion rights, warning of dire consequences from a Republican base already unenthused about their nominee.

McCain's comments Wednesday to the Weekly Standard's Stephen Hayes that former Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Ridge's pro-abortion rights views wouldn't necessarily rule him out quickly found their way into the in-boxes of Christian conservatives. For those who have been anxiously awaiting McCain's pick as a signal of his ideological intentions, there was deep concern that their worst fears about the Arizona senator may be realized.

It figures that the outrage started in Ohio. I get so sick of the "holier than thou," pinheads getting upset over abortion but don't mind spending 100 more years committing murder and destruction abroad. Weren't these creeps supposed to be "raptured away," by now????

It's OK with me if McC keeps this abortion nonsense on the back burner. The US has so much going on that what should be personal business should stay there for once. But, he has been such a flip-flopper, even on his own supposedly strong-held views, that he will not stick with this. He's so busy trying to suck up to the repub infrastructure that he will pick an "approved" running mate.

When an idiot tries to ride two horses going in opposite directions, isn't it time for a reevaluation?

Man...he can't really win for losing, can he?

I mean...regardless of who he picks as a VP, he is gonna anger either Independents or his Republican base...but he can't win without both of them.

I generally disagree with everything that comes out of his mouth, and it is really painful to watch him give a speach...but man...that is a horrible situation to be in...

Also...what is up with my overuse of ellipsis marks? I guess we will never know...

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 08:59 AM on 08/15/2008

The republican party tied it's wagon to the conservative base. As conservative ideology becomes more discredited by the general populace the republicans will sink with the conservative anchor tied around it's neck, they can't get abord the mainstream boat anymore. It wasn't a bad party until they embraced the nut jobs, now they can't live without them.

You're using ellipsis marks instead of comas. But what the hell...expess yourself originally.

This ProLife issue is such a loser for Republicans. When will they get that? They either have to cater to the Relig Right and alienate center Americans, or alienate Relig Right and cater to the center---or outright LIE TO and deceive both. Besides, Americans can no longer afford these extra children they are so intent on getting born.
What a loser issue.

"Besides, Americans can no longer afford these extra children they are so intent on getting born. "

Actually, "getting them born" has always been at the root of the anti-choice agenda.

The more underprivileged, undereducated humans, the more cannon-fodder for imperial wars. Kings and popes are not on the front lines.

As for the ones who do not go to war, they make wonderful minimum wage servants, producers and consumers. That is why rulers and religious leaders have always opposed birth control in any form: strength in numbers and all that. They invoke moral rationalizations, but its always power, control and greed.

It's as old as history.

If someone is anti-abortion (who isn't?), anti-war, anti-death penalty, THEN they can call themselves "Pro-Life". Otherwise, they are merely Anti-Choice.

So we have dems with their feet dug in, and may have repubs in a snit....looks like we may have a few people sitting out on November 4th.

That makes it all the more important for those of us who are actually happy with their candidate to make absolutely certain we get to our polling places and vote. They may be apathetic, but we aren't.

He can choose anyone he wants and the 'base' will still vote for him. And he knows it. What other choice do they have? And they won't stay home. This bunch ALWAYS votes. It's just like the Obama base - they don't like his flip flopping on FISA and campaign financing, but they don't have any other choice. In both instances there's almost nothing either candidate could do to lose the votes of Rabid Republicans or Yellow Dog Democrats.

Sorry to disappoint, but I did not disagree with Obama on FISA or his decision about campaign financing. My candidate is extremely intelligent, diligent in his efforts to address the issues that concern me, such as the Occupation in Iraq, Alternative Energy sources, Diplomatic Foreign Relations, Womens Rights, Middle Class Tax cuts, Affordable College Tuition, Rescinding Tax Cuts for Big Oil companies and those who ship jobs oversees, creating new Jobs. He is inspirational and has a fresh perspective about the future of America. I am not voting for my candidate because I have no choice, I always have the option to vote for the other guy or stay home. I am voting for Senator Obama because he is the ONLY choice for America. This country needs his leadership, and I will do everything in my power to see that he becomes the next President of the United States of America. And if you're smart, you'll do the same.

Conservatives not going to vote for McCain if he chooses a pro-choice VP? Yeah, right. I'll believe it when I see it.

These are Republicans. Cognitive dissonance is the Republican way of life. You can bet good money that 99.9% of them will find a way to justify voting for the Republican candidate, no matter what that candidate may do or be. The GOP ticket could be anything -- ANYTHING -- it could be McCain/Lieberman, or Obama/Clinton, or Beelzebub/Lucifer, and the Republican base would find a way to talk themselves into pulling the lever for the (R).

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 05:14 AM on 08/15/2008

You nailed it - they could run road kill and the base would turn out and vote.

I can't believe I was once blinded by the hate-filled bigots. I wish I had every dime back that ever went to any activity or candidate in the Republicaan party. I am so embarrassed.I was at the RNC convention in 1992. I saw Jack Abramoff, Tom Delay, and all the others of that ilk slithering around then. They make me want to puke now. Everyone needs to understand that if you are poor or middle-class all you are to them is a means to an end that does not include you!

Moxieme,

You are so right (pardon the pun)!!! It's just sad that so many Americans will never come to the realization that you have. I have said for many years that Republicans legislate by the motto:

I got mine... you get yours the best way you can!

Their policies are so full of contradictions and blatent lies. This is such an abomination when you think of how they toot their "religious right" and "values" horns. If voters could see through this muck and just "VOTE YOUR POCKETBOOKS", if nothing else. The Bush/McCain Republicans have no agendas that will benefit middle-class Americans. Mark my words!
