John McCain said he would consider a pro-choice vice president. Barack Obama will have a pro-life speaker at the Democratic convention. But these surprise moves don't change the metrics of the general election, one of the nation's most prominent abortion rights leaders argued on Thursday.

Nancy Keenan, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America, said no amount of lip service to the pro-choice community could erase McCain's "25-year record of voting against women's freedom of privacy." Even picking an abortion rights proponent like former Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Ridge as a running mate would do little to change the underlying dynamics of the electorate, she told the Huffington Post.

"Let's just say that the president is the one who sets the policy, they are the one who sets the direction, they are the one that is going to nominate a Supreme Court justice," she said. "And if John McCain is president of the United States we are going to have Supreme Court justices like Clarence Thomas and John Roberts and Samuel Alito, he has said that. He has called of the overturning of Roe v. Wade, which goes even farther than George Bush. And again, back to the record, he has 25 years here of an unbelievable record against women's reproductive rights."

As McCain was hinting that Ridge could very well be in the VP mix, reports surfaced that the Obama campaign had offered Bob Casey Jr., a pro-lifer also from Pennsylvania, a lucrative speaking slot at the Democratic convention. Unlike the idea of a pro-choice Republican VP, the possibility of a pro-life Democrat speaking at the party's convention has actually been broached. In 1992, Bill Clinton denied Casey's father a speaking slot on the basis of his abortion views creating a party fissure. Keenan said such a rift would not nor should not occur in '08.

"We are not upset about it. Sen. Casey worked hard for Sen. Obama and it just makes sense and it is not a surprise that he has his supporter at the convention. And the other thing is, he is talking about economic policy," she said. "Again, let's go back to who is going to be the president. Sen. Obama is fully pro-choice, the party platform is very, very strong, one of the strongest it has been in many years, and his solid commitment to a women's right to choose is just stellar. So we are focused on electing Sen. Obama as the next president because we know he is going to be the one advancing those policies protecting freedom and privacy."

The inside-out politics at play were furthered, in a way, by the announcement Thursday that former Senate Republican Lincoln Chafee would be joining NARAL's board. Keenan hailed the move as exemplary of the centrist potential that a women's rights stance can bring to a political ticket, and she predicted electoral benefits for Obama.

"As we take a look at who we have to bring over and take votes away from John McCain, it is Republican and Independent women. And I think with Sen. Chafee's [support]... there will be a lot of Republican women out there who will vote for Sen. Obama once they learn how extreme McCain is on reproductive choice."

As for why more women didn't have a grasp of McCain's record, 26 years into his time in Congress, Keenan noted that perceptions -- once hardened over time -- are difficult to break.

"It is the myth of the moderate maverick," she said. "I think people make the assumption that because he has been coined as both a moderate and a maverick that he must be pro choice, which is wrong."

John McCain said he would consider a pro-choice vice president. Barack Obama will have a pro-life speaker at the Democratic convention. But these surprise moves don't change the metrics of the general...

NARAL chose to endorse Barack Obama over Hillary Clinton, a founding member of that group and this when Obama has questioned whether abortion was justified in cases of emotional and mental illness. Granted he thought that that should be applied after the first trimester but still find it difficult to believe that a woman who was severely paranoid or schizophrenic could be denied an abortion. We have seen evidence of women who stated that they believed that God wanted their children drowned or who found ways to torture their babies due to profound psychosis from postpartum depression.

If McSame gets elected, the only upshot would be the end of the Roe Vs Wade decision. It would force women to REVOLT. Why more than 50% of the population doesn't have a wider say in their government is beyond me. What happens to married women? All of a sudden they forget what it was like to be marginalized and told what they can and cannot do with their uterus.

Repubs may attempt to play both sides of this ProLife issue, by outright lying to and deceiving both.
It's not like Americans can even AFFORD these extra children that MUST be born, nor can we afford the social services for those who are neglected.

This is now just a fake--and very dead--issue.

NARAL: I will NEVER, EVER give money or donate time to your cause. You blew it endorsing by endoring Obama and dissing Hillary. She was the one who had your back all those years. You could have waited until the primaries were over and all would have been well. But you didn't and many of us will remember that when you come begging for money in January (anniversary of Roe v. Wade). I'm old and gay. I've worked hard for many years on pro-choice issues. If straight women can't pick up this battle, then I'm done. I can't get pregnant anymore and I don't give a rat's ass about straight women who won't fight for their own rights.

Cindy, get over it. Obviously NAREL saw something in hrc that they did not like. Like alot of people out there, you THINK that a woman should vote for a woman or an AA should vote for Obama. It does not work like that, you suppose WHO YOU want to, that is a democracy.

Pathetic - a man actually supports women's issues and your angry?? I think your anger is sorely misdirected. Obama had the same rating as Clinton from NARAL.

Letting your politics cloud your judgement is a seismic mistake.

McCain doesn't much care for women. He liked to chase them in his young and middle aged years. (He was in his forties when he picked up Cindy McCain in her early twenties while McCain was still married to his handicapped wife.) But by his votes over the past quarter century he has shown a marked disrespect for women and their struggles, needs and rights. A guy who respects women doesn't call his wife the "C" word and a "painted trollop" in private, let alone in public. Even his jokes are chauvinistic and brutal toward women----any woman who has been raped can tell you that it isn't funny and it has nothing to do with male sexual prowess or a desire to have it happen again. Every woman in America should be doing all she can to see that this man never has a chance to make or influence decisions that will effect a woman's life whether it is our own or our daughters or our grand daughters. McCain has a dark streak in his mind when it comes to women. It should scare the tooey out of us to even think about voting for him.

So? what difference does this make? McCain will lie..change ...flip and or flop and no one......will call him on it...No one.
In fact...somehow he gets protected from any and all scrutiny. How and Why ?...I dunno...but it's a fact, and that, as they say, is that.

Well NARAL this pro choice lady who is progressive and liberal will vote for McCain. No corrupt party will hold me a political hostage because I'm a woman. You care about your issue then fight to get Clinton. Next time endorse the woman who has helped us in the past, or are you also on the Obama payroll. Seriously, you should consider your stance on late term abortion, it is unethical and should be outlawed.

You have set off a troll alert, orangepetal. Your paymaster may continue using you to comments on HP though. Some trolls are not even aware that their is such a thing as rhetoric, maybe punctuation too. However your paymaster may now demand that he/she/it or editors see your work before they will allow you to submit it to HP's comments & pay you the usual, customary & reasonable fee for your services as a troll. Some paymasters of trolls use monitors/editors to aid their trolls in composing comments to be submitted to HP. The www has grown. Free lance trolls are being replaced by those trolls who work full time for 1 paymaster. It could be called a quality control measure for the rabidly, reactionary, far right community.

Of course, NARAL is an out-in-left field bunch of nuts anymore to whom no one pays attention. I do agree with them on this, though.

If McCain selects Romney (pro-life flip-flopper) as a vp then he may win MI at the cost of having a low evangelical turnout at the polls in Nov. Is it worth the risk?

mc cain thinks people of america are stupid and will believe everything they are told, the media endorses this, most rich boys think they have rights over others, at least the dumb spoilt ones do, jack is as good as his master and its time people realised this, the people who make money from war at the expense of american lives are not going to keep america safe, they havnt in the past and they wont in future. maybe if people saw iraqis and iranians as people not terrorists, and if they realise mc cain has the sort of values as the leaders of these countries they would realise that ordinary people suffer just like americans, its always the ordinary people who are conned into fighting the leaders battles, battles to get other countries assets is not the same as defence of your own country, the first is evil the second is patriotic, leaders who dont worry about your sons and daughters wont care about your rights as women.

"In 1992, Bill Clinton denied Casey's father a speaking slot on the basis of his abortion views creating a party fissure."

Your statement is factually incorrect, and does not become any less so as a result of repetition. Casey was denied a speaking slot on the basis of his refusal to endorse Bill Clinton

How do you feel knowing that Bill Clinton has a premier speaking slot at OBAMA's convention, in spite of the fact that he (Bill) has not endorsed OBAMA?

Which of these 2 men have the more admirable character traits:
Clinton not giving Casey a spot because of the refusal to endorse OR
OBAMA giving Clinton a spot in the absence of an endorsement?

Correct. OBAMA 08!

Well and Casey isn't for overturning Roe v. Wade. He's one of those people for pro-choice personally, but not willing to overturn the laws protecting choice nationally. I can live with that as a very pro-choice person.

McCain on the other hand, is completely anti-choice and even anti birth control. And yet people think that he's much more moderate than he is. I hope the message gets out there about how hard-Right McCain is about this. Not from the MSM of course. Heaven forbid anyone or anything get in the way of their boy-crush maverick image they like to peddle.
