NEW YORK — Oil fell to its lowest price in three months Friday, briefly touching the $111 level after the dollar muscled higher and OPEC predicted the world's thirst for fuel next year will fall to its lowest point since 2002.

Light, sweet crude for September delivery fell $1.24 to settle at $113.77 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange after falling to $111.34, its lowest price since May 2 and more than $35 _ or 24 percent _ below its July 11 trading record above $147.

As high energy costs force countries around the globe to cut back on consumption, crude prices have plummeted and are now within striking distance of $100 a barrel, a level first reached Feb. 19.

At the pump, retail gas prices also continued falling, with a gallon of regular shedding about half a penny overnight to a new national average of $3.771, according to auto club AAA, the Oil Price Information Service and Wright Express. Gas peaked at $4.114 on July 17.

Crude fell after the dollar gained strength against the euro on U.S. data showing that industrial output rose more than expected in July. The 15-nation euro has lost some of its luster compared to its American rival amid growing evidence that European economies are slowing. The euro bought $1.4675 in trading Friday, down from $1.4811 late Thursday.

A rising dollar typically pushes oil prices lower as investors who buy crude and other commodities as hedges against inflation start dumping their positions to cut their losses. A stronger greenback also makes dollar-denominated commodities more expensive to overseas buyers, further eroding demand.

"The dollar is on fire again so that's causing people to re-evaluate everything," said Phil Flynn, oil analyst at Alaron Trading Corp. in Chicago. "It means oil prices could fall dramatically. We could see prices get to double digits if this continues."

An OPEC forecast of lower demand also put downward pressure on prices.

In its monthly oil report, the organization forecast world appetite for oil this year overall will fall by 30,000 barrels a day. While forecasting demand growing by a daily 1 million barrels a day this year, and another 900,000 barrels in 2009, the report noted that world demand growth next year will also be "the lowest since 2002," with demand growth from the major industrialized countries actually declining.

"They're basically saying we could have an oil glut because demand is slowing," Flynn said. "It's obvious that high prices do slow down demand and the market works."

The OPEC report came two days after the U.S. Department of Energy highlighted the ongoing drop in U.S. demand for energy as Americans struggle with high costs for gasoline, food and other goods.

Oil's steady decline has continued despite the simmering weeklong conflict between Russia and Georgia over two breakaway provinces. Western leaders worked Friday to persuade Russia to pull troops out of Georgia, but regional tensions soared after a top Russian general warned that Poland could face attack over its missile defense deal with the United States.

British oil company BP PLC said Thursday it has resumed pumping gas into the Baku-Tbilisi-Erzurum pipeline that runs through Georgia, but two oil pipelines remained closed. BP's Baku-Supsa oil pipeline was shut as a precaution, and the larger Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan line, a key supplier to Western countries, remains shut after a fire earlier this month on the Turkish section of the line.

Analysts noted that the conflict in Georgia, while likely not driven primarily by energy concerns, highlights Moscow's influence over oil and natural gas reserves in the region. Russia exports more oil than any country except Saudi Arabia, and is the world's leading producer of natural gas.

Only weeks ago, such a clash would likely have sent oil prices soaring. But the market has largely ignored the fighting in Georgia because traders have already priced in the geopolitical risk, analysts say. Crude's monthlong nosedive has also made it harder for bullish traders to spark a rally, despite a possible threat to oil installations.

Also weighing on prices Friday was the expiration of September oil contract options at the end of the day, a trading cycle that often increases volatility.

In other Nymex trading, heating oil futures rose 2 cents to settle at $3.1191 a gallon, while gasoline prices slipped 5.18 cents to settle at $2.8602 a gallon. Natural gas futures fell 4.4 cents to settle at $8.092 per 1,000 cubic feet.

In London, September Brent crude fell $1.13 to settle at $112.55 a barrel.

You see what happens when everyone inflates their tires? All it takes is some hot air from Obama.

Americans seem to have reduced their consumption by 800,000 barrels per day. If you had written in a blog a year ago that such a measure of conservation was possible in the good old US of A, I would have flamed you. Trust me, I would have called you names for your optimism and belief in the American people.

And now look at us. We are using less oil! We really are. And the market responds and prices are down.

Now just imagine we would have listened to Jimmy Carter 30 years ago and 48mpg would be the average fuel efficiency in the US. And gasoline would probably be hovering around 50 cents per gallon because the dollar would be strong and the price for oil would be near historic lows.

But then, who would listen to a loser such as Carter? Are we not so much better off having elected a winner like Reagan who made it possible for Putin to reform his country and now wield some real power on the world stage? Never mind the Alzheimer's (Carter is still sharp like a knife, by the way!).

Even a broken watch is right twice a day. When you lie to people, they tend not to listen. We see it with Bush, we saw it with Carter when he tried to scare people into believing oil was going to be gone in the early 1980s . . .

Nobody said oil was going to be gone in the early 80's least of all Carter. Honestly Unbias, if you are going to rewrite history don't do it around people who were there to write it down in the first place.

Without oil our modern society turns primitive; with oil our modern society becomes bankrupted. Surely, there are other options.

There are literally dozens of viable options for energy. True free enterprise, not the Wall Street bailout for unregulated fraud brand, has technology right now to push back the use of fossil fuels. The main impediment is the Republican Party blocking the incentives to employ these technologies. They are holding America hostage to their Oil Baron Masters. They are the Quislings of the War on Energy. No Government Manhattan Project is required. Innovative ideas abound from desert grown jojoba oil to oil laden algae. Private research with a minimum of Government sponsorship is developing cellulosic ethanol to replace corn based ethanol. Methanol, the other ingredient in biodiesel, can similarly be produced. The CO2 from coal fired electric plants can be used to grow an oil rich algae as a by product.

So long as the corporate media keeps feeding the sheeple propaganda we will remain literally in the dark (ages). They keep the Military Complex alive by focusing on the need for oil. This produces the vicious cycle of need oil, protect oil, anger people, oil threatened, protect oil, create more enemies….

1953, US topples Iran’s democratic Government, installs dictator, takes oil back.
1983, US backs Saddam in his war against Iran.
1990, US gives Saddam go ahead to attack Kuwait then double crosses Saddam.
1990, Soviet Union falls.
1991, Saddam replaces Soviet Union as boogeyman (coincidence?).
2001, Osama bin Laden replaces Saddam as boogeyman (for show only).
2008, Georgia/Russia conflict replaces Middle East for Military spending purposes?

In the last quartile of the coming economic depression as the mobs terrorize the innocent and frigjhten the leadership, there will be a legislation passed that destroys the power of Wall Street and international interests over the American interests of commanding our own economic destiny. Then we will begin the arduous and agonizing rebuilding of our plant, equipment, competence and self confidence. And we shall renew ourselves and our country.

Folks, I just want to take this opportunity to remind you that Coyote's prognostication record still holds well. I told you that the price of oil would stay high until China stopped buying for the games. Bingo.

Coyote told you since Huffy started up 3 years ago that oil prices were going up. I told you to sell your SUV's when resale values had peaked. I told you at the end of 2005 that real estate had peaked and advised selling. History has proven that prices peaked in December 2005. I picked O last year before he became a contender.

I am the shaman here with a proven record, yet many still laugh. Okay, your turn: you tell us what will happen.

During election time you have to give the masses bread and circus, and cheap oil, to make smooth transition for whoever is to become the next dictator of the USA. Remember Congress is just a circus and the director lives in a little house in Pennsylvania Av.

The whole game of oil prices was simply a way for Bush to exploit the American people. The new Saddam Hussein of Iraq has his instructions given by the Saudis.

yes folks....,
don't be stupid
drill drill drill
for a marginal increase in the wolrds supply of oil
on marginal fields that are increasingly harder and more expensive to drill
because damn it..., that marginal increase in drilling in the U.S. (the most heavily explored country in the world by far), will marginally lower the price..., and make uneducated couch potatos happy

Certainly it's no coincidence. It's that vast right-wing conspiracy rearing it's ugly head. Some day when you have the time, I'd like to explain the 'controlled demolition' theory of WTC 9/11. I know what REALLY happened that day.

[Light, sweet crude for September......fell .....more than $35 or 24% below oil's July 11 trading record above $147.]

amazing.

Oil fell about 24% in 1 month. Since that peak gasoline period of July 17th, gas has fallen about 24 cents

but that's only 5.8% from its peak to current.

Why the huge difference for the consumer?
When oil goes up, gas goes up THE SAME DAY!
When oil goes down, they have every excuse in the book to keep gas prices for the consumers up.

I actually once heard an employee of a gas station behind the counter talking on the phone to another gas station a few miles away asking them when they were going to raise their prices and by how much. Not the same chain.

Doesnt that sound like Collusion to keep prices the same between competitors?

When I go to the local grocers I can see the price for fruits and vegetables change by a factor of five over the period of a week. When they don't have any fresh fruits of a variety, yet, the imported stuff is five bucks a pound. Comes the local season and they sell the same fruits to you (just better because it was halfway ripe when picked) for 99 cents.

I have yet to hear complaints about that "phenomenon".

Retail gas stations lose money when the price of oil and RBOB gas futures go up, then recoup their losses by delaying price reductions when the futures prices go back down. Most people don't realize that gas stations lose money on every gallon of gas sold when oil goes up quickly. Gas stations don't even make much money anyway. They make most their money on selling snacks and coffee and such.

THE TURE PRICE FOR A BARREL OF OIL IS AROUND $ 58.00 !!!!!!!!

ALL THE REST IS SPECULATION!!

There is an oil glut right now.

Oil producers can't find enough old ships and barrages to fill with oil.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 01:36 PM on 08/15/2008

That "oil glut" will go away as soon as everyone starts buying heating oil.

As far as shipping is concerned: if there are ships to be filled with overproduced oil (I doubt that's the case) it means only one thing: we have too much shipping capacity. And that would be good, why?

NO... never got to the market yet... they dont have any where to pump it into.

Gas inventories fell because refineries are operating less hours... more manipulation, not because of a shortage of oil. And you dont need as much in reserve when demand drops as it has!

Demand has been dropping since last November... while prices went from 81 to 146.... speculation! No shortgage anywhere.

And we took 2 million barrels a day off the market since we invaded Iraq. When that comes back online..Oil will be $60 a barrel or less. remember only 18 months ago it dropped to $51 per barrel..

This has been a massive transfer of wealth from the many to the few.. thank You repugs. This speculation caused people to lose their jobs and homes.

Bingo. Gas supplies fell because refinery utilization also dropped from an average of 95% to about 85% for the past few months.

Not so much KSA producing more oil as America consuming less. There is way more flexibility on the demand than on the supply side right now. Depending on who you believe, KSA might have not even expanded their production much beyond what they had announced years ago.
