LAKE FOREST, Calif. — Presidential contenders Barack Obama and John McCain differed sharply on abortion Saturday, with McCain saying a baby's human rights begin "at conception," while Obama restated his support for legalized abortion.

Appearing on the same stage for the first time in months, although they overlapped only briefly, the two men shared their views on a range of moral, foreign and domestic issues as they near their respective nominating conventions.

Obama said he would limit abortions in the late stages of pregnancy if there are exceptions for the mother's health. He said he knew that people who consider themselves pro-life will find his stance "inadequate."

He said the government should do more to prevent unwanted pregnancies and to help struggling new mothers, such as providing needed resources to the poor, and better adoption services.

McCain expressed his anti-abortion stand simply and quickly, saying human rights begin the instant a human egg is fertilized. McCain, who adopted a daughter from Bangladesh, also called for making adoption easier.

The men's comments came at a two-hour forum on faith hosted by the minister Rick Warren at his megachurch in Orange County, Calif. Obama joined Warren for the first hour, and McCain for the second. The two candidates briefly shook hands and hugged each other during the switch. McCain said he did not see or hear Obama's session, which would have given him an advantage.

Obama said America's greatest moral failure is its insufficient help to the disadvantaged. He noted that the Bible quotes Jesus as saying "whatever you do for the least of my brothers, you do for me." He said the maxim should apply to victims of poverty, sexism and racism.

McCain said the nation's greatest moral shortcoming is its failure to "devote ourselves to causes greater than our self-interests."

Story continues below

After the September 2001 terrorist attacks, McCain said, there should have been a national push for joining the Peace Corps and other volunteer organizations. His comment seemed an indirect criticism of President Bush, who had urged tax cuts and more shopping at the time to stimulate the economy.

McCain also said he would pursue Osama bin Laden "to the gates of Hell," another goal that might be seen as a swipe at the Bush administration.

Both men said marriage is a union between a man and a woman. Obama added that he supports civil unions for gay partners, which would give them rights such as hospital visits with one another. He said he opposed a constitutional ban on gay marriage, calling the matter a state issue.

McCain's answer was less clear. If a federal court ordered his state, Arizona, to honor gay marriages allowed in Massachusetts, he said, "then I would favor a constitutional amendment. Until then, I believe the states should make the decisions within their own states."

In several cases, Obama gave a Christian interpretation to his generally liberal political views. He said he is redeemed by Jesus, who died for his sins.

McCain tended to give shorter, less complex answers, winning somewhat more applause than Obama from the large, evangelical church's audience. On domestic matters, he restated his call to "drill now" in U.S. lands and waters for oil and natural gas.

McCain, asked the toughest decision in his life, cited his refusal to be released ahead of fellow U.S. prisoners of war in North Vietnam. "It took a lot of prayer," he said.

He retold his story of a Christmas Day celebration outside his cell, when a prison guard etched a cross into the dirt. "For a moment, we were just two Christians worshipping there," McCain said.

Warren asked each man to name a Supreme Court justice he would not have appointed. Obama cited Clarence Thomas. "I don't think that he was a strong enough jurist or legal thinker at the time for that elevation, setting aside the fact that I profoundly disagree with his interpretations of a lot of the Constitution," Obama said.

He also named Justices Antonin Scalia and John Roberts, although he praised their intellect.

McCain named the court's four most liberal members: Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Stephen Breyer, David Souter and John Paul Stevens.

When Warren asked Obama to define the word "rich," the Illinois senator teased the pastor about the mammoth sales of his book, "The Purpose Driven Life." Obama noted his plan to add a new Social Security payroll tax to incomes above $250,000 a year.

McCain said, "some of the richest people I've ever known in my life are the most unhappy."

He said being rich should be defined by having a home and a prosperous and safe world. Without mentioning Obama, he said some want to increase taxes.

"I don't want to take any money from the rich. I want everybody to get rich," McCain said.

When pushed on an exact number, he joked: "If you're just talking about income, how about five million?" He added, "I'm sure that comment will be distorted."

Asked to name three wise people they would listen to, Obama named his wife, Michelle; his maternal grandmother, who lives in Hawaii; and, not limiting himself to only a third, named several Democratic and Republican lawmakers.

McCain named Gen. David Petreaus, head of U.S. troops in Iraq; U.S. Rep. and veteran civil rights leader John Lewis, D-Ga.; and former eBay CEO Meg Whitman, a top adviser to his campaign.

He lauded Whitman for turning a five-person business into a billion-dollar piece of the economy. "It's one of these great economic success stories," McCain said.

Obama, asked his most significant policy shift in the last 10 years, cited welfare reform. As an Illinois state senator, he worked to mitigate what he thought could be "disastrous" effects of President Clinton's welfare reform effort. But over time he said he came to embrace Clinton's approach.

"We have to have work as a centerpiece of any social policy," Obama said.

Asked why they want to be president, Obama said the United States should be an empathetic power for good in the world, a mission he fears is slipping away.

McCain said, "I want to inspire a generation of Americans to serve a cause greater than its self interest. . But I also believe we face enormous challenges, both of national security and domestic."

This morning on one of the Sunday talks Andrea Mitchell commented about whether or not McCain's room was really soundproof. Then I heard or read someplace that McCain had a cell phone and was texting to get questions.

Well that is rumor, but interesting. However, Andrea Mitchell doesn't have much credibility either.

Andrea Mitchell squashed the smear when McSame tried to say Senator Obama wouldn't visit the wounded troops because she WAS there and knew the truth.

You think mcsame knows how to text message? I sincerely doubt that. He might have had a telegraph machine in there and someone using Morse code to get him the questions in advance.....now, THAT I could believe.

When I think of this guy Rick Warren the only words that comes to mind are "Con Man".
Chubby, limp, lazy, blowhard, ego gratification all come to mind as well.
This guy convinced enough ignorant people to remain in prepetual ignorance so that he can pad his bank account.
OK, let's make believe that pink elephants can fly, then you will have reliigon at it's core- all ficiton!!!
Religion, all religion has caused more pain and suffereing than any other human concept ever conceived!!
Religion relies on total ignorance of any facts, because it just makes up what it wants never able to prove even the smallest of half truths.
Jesus was only a man.
Mohammad was only a man.
Ghandi was only a man.
Moses was only a man.
Religion is so frightened of the truth that in it's name it will butcher you and your family to conceal the lies that it puts forth that there is really no such thing as GOD!
Religion relies on fear, or hell.
Religion relies on laziness to make slaves of the dimwitted, rich and poor alike.
Keep religion out of Government period, for it is pure poison!
Keep it to yourself as it was intended.

So your religion is to be a bigot to all people of all faiths? No wonder we lose so many elections

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 07:27 PM on 08/17/2008

Am I the only one offended by this religious test for office specifically prohibited by Article Six of our Constitution? When asked questions about faith and religion, I wish all candidates for public office in the land would say, "If lucky enough to be elected, I will take an oath to protect and defend the Constitution. Article Six of our Constitution states '...no religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust under the United States.' Therefore, on said Constitutional grounds, I refuse to answer your question." I'd vote for any candidate who would do that, no matter his party, no matter the office. If more candidates did this, we could get religion out of our politcs. Then again, maybe I'm just naive.

I felt Senator Obama introduced himself very well, or as well as can be expected, considering the preconceptions that the audience most likely had.

From my experience, usually when a crowd is quiet and not sneezing or coughing, they're listening and trying to understand.

My sense is he just defined the election as an election between a thinker and a swashbuckler, and Senator Obama gave the audience a lot to think about.

I think Obama has proven that he is too intelligent to be voted President by the multitude that felt
that McCain answered the questions. What I heard was a very shallow reiteration of the GOP party
platform and platitudes. I'm sure McCain has repeated those anecdotes many times. I'm sure we will
\see the same during the debates.

I think John McCain got the questions in advance.\

He was very fast with answers. Not even a pause that was significant.

I don't doubt for a minute he didn't know what was coming.

It didn't make Rick Warren look very good either.

After all, they don't cheat at anything when it comes to an election.??!!

Obama’s decision to speak out against the war in Iraq in October 2002 was “the most gut wrenching decision” he’s ever made? While running unopposed for re-election to the Illinois State Senate in a district that votes 90% Democratic? In a city that was preparing to give 82% of its votes to the most vocal opponent of the build-up to the war in the United States Senate at the time (Dick Durbin)? Give me a break. If not for "the fairy tale," it would have been the easiest call he ever made.

I watched the Rick Warren debacle last night, why oh why does no one feel this is scarey that a religious organization should be doing this on national TV,going to speak is one thing but to give the Pastor the assumed power of interviewing the cadidates is CREEPY and SCAREY what happened to the CONSTITUTION OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA?????
John Mcaine most certainly had the questions before hand that was obvious.

Obama's performance during the forum was lackluster to say the least. However, I do feel he was more sincere than McCain. McCain's responses were scripted and political pandering at it's best.

His greatest moral failure was the end of his first marriage....not quite. His greatest moral failure was committing adultery with his present wife while married to his first wife...then walking out on her and his children....maybe he should have put it that way.

On one of the internet political news blogs a commentor to a post stated 'Obama using his "white side" to slam a "brutha" (referring to his comments about his disapproval of Clarence Thomas) - that type statement and thinking is an example of all that's WRONG WITH AMERICA...and that's coming from my HUMAN side!

Everything has to ultimately flow into the mighty river of racial discord. We can't get passed the fact that there's a black candidate (first in the history of our nation) running against a white candidate. What is the big deal? I read a comment on a blog recently where a gentleman stated "if Obama wins the White House - a guess we'll still be able to call it that......"

It's so trivial and unimportant. What is important is bringing our babies home from Iraq; stabilizing our economy; alternatives to our dependency on foreign nations for oil; re-establishing a credible role as a country that's a world leader.

Who can accomplish this? The color of his skin shouldn't matter.

Both OBama and McCain only want you see what theu want you to see and will avoid any forum that has high exposure. Obama is worse then McCain in this regard; neither one deserves your vote for president.

Actually, I respectfully disagree. I'm gonna get slammed for this -- I'm supposed to be a good liberal -- but McCain did a wonderful job answering those questions. So did Barack, although he tends to drone a bit when he gets going...

I applaud Sen. McCain for having the courage to mention his first marriage at all. I believe he is genuinely remorseful. I still won't vote for him -- we disagree on far too much. I'm just saying, he's not Satan incarnate. And I don't think Obama is worse at all -- if anything, he deserves credit for being the first liberal in a long time to acknowledge his faith and explain its relationship to his political views. As a liberal Christian, I appreciate this approach.

Of course McCain did a wonderful job - he defeated the whole purpose of them being seperate by knowing the questions in advance.McCain had a chance to prepare to the EXACT question; Obama could only prepare perhaps in a general way, guessing what he MIGHT ask.
I don't think Obama "droned"...it's just that Obama was actively thinking about what he was going to say,as opposed to McCain's lightning-fast delivery of practiced, stump answers. Most of the questions required complex answers, and Obama delivered.

I don't understand why people said Obama didn't do well. I watched some of it this morning, and he was wonderful. He was thoughtful, and actually answered the questions and addressed himself to the pastor. I think commentators were swayed by the reaction of the partisan audience. I'm glad Barack appeared. He presented himself as a very courteous, intelligent, thoughtful man. I believe he gained a lot of respect from that audience even if they may not have agreed with him. Now how about McCain going on Oprah in front of an all female audience and explaining why he left his disabled wife for another woman 25 years younger than him? Let's see how much respect he'd get.

WAS McCain's Cross in the sand story stolen from Solzhenitsyn????
it seems the story was actually excerpted from "The Gulag Archipelago" by Alexander Solzhenitsyn,

Leaving his shovel on the ground, he slowly walked to a crude bench and sat down. He knew that at any moment a guard would order him to stand up, and when he failed to respond, the guard would beat him to death, probably with his own shovel. He had seen it happen to other prisoners.
As he waited, head down, he felt a presence. Slowly he looked up and saw a skinny old prisoner squat down beside him. The man said nothing. Instead, he used a stick to trace in the dirt the sign of the Cross. The man then got back up and returned to his work.
As Solzhenitsyn stared at the Cross drawn in the dirt his entire perspective changed. He knew he was only one man against the all-powerful Soviet empire. Yet he knew there was something greater than the evil he saw in the prison camp, something greater than the Soviet Union. He knew that hope for all people was represented by that simple Cross. Through the power of the Cross, anything was possible.
Solzhenitsyn slowly rose to his feet, picked up his shovel, and went back to work. Outwardly, nothing had changed. Inside, he had received hope.
[From Luke Veronis, "The Sign of the Cross"; Communion, issue 8, Pascha 1997.]

PetraKropotkin pointed out:

Yes, indeed, Petra. There's very little about McCain that isn't a malleable, interchangeable construct of perpetual myth creating/re-enforcing.

He jettisons long-held, core beliefs (and loved ones) in the blink of an eye. Poignant tales he's told and written about his years in captivity, can be dramatically altered to better align them with the interests of whichever city his audience happens to reside. (The Green Bay Packers being switched for the Pittsburgh Steelers while in Pittsburgh, comes immediately to mind.)

Plagiarizing the cross on Christmas story would be yet a new low for this charlatan.

There is nothing John Sidney McCain III wouldn't say or do to attain his goal of becoming America's newest War President.

Thank you, Petra, for pointing this out. I wonder if anyone from the msm will bother to look into it. I won't be holding my breath.

I cannot for the life of me figure out why Senator Obama keeps going to these right wing conservatives and expecting something different. Not all of America is going to vote for him. I have long supported Senator Obama and will continue but all he needs to do is be different than the current administration and the Republican Party. He seems to believe that he must appease them, will he should stick to his guns and tell them where he stands, I believe in my religion but I know that pastors like Warner will have nothing of him, I am anti abortion when it comes to my life, but I also believe that everyone should be able to decide for themselves, thus being pro choice. Senator, you have your base and will win or lose because of us and quite wasting your time with these people who will never vote for you.

LOL........yeah right. McCains admission to being a adulterer was about as sincere as a snake oil salesmen. The only conviction McCain has is if Bush did it so will I. He's pro life except if you are an 18 year old he'll send you off to phony wars to die. He's really hell bent on war. Funny how Bush and Putin are so buddy buddy that in order for McCain to look tough his foreign policy advisor Scheunemann with ties to Georgia all of a sudden a " new cold war" comes into play??

Talk about wagging the dog???? People can see through this. This all falls into Charlie Blacks and McCains theory of let's put some good terrorist threat out there to get elected. They fall for it every time.
