We were in NYC last week and on Monday, the day we were to leave, there were bad storms. Bad American canceled our 3 p.m. plane because of the 10 a.m. storms. We're rebooked. So we are sitting having lunch and I look up to see every television saying something that looked like, from far away "tornado warning." (I have fear of flying and tremendous fear of bad weather, ie., tornadoes, so this was too of my phobias together! Not good.) But it was for Suffolk County. So I ask the manager where Suffolk County is and apparently that is Long Island and not Manhattan, which was quite a relief. So that's two tornado warnings in less than a week.

Andby the way, I'm from suburban Chicago and the earlier poster is correct -- Chicago did have a tornado warning not quite two weeks ago. (I spent THAT one huddled with about 50 kids in the bathrooms of a community college, where the kids were rehearsing a play.) What was unusual about that one was that the warning WAS for Chicago proper. That just does not happen very often at all. In fact, I believe they evacuated Wrigley Field -- at leastmaking people go inside AND they moved everyone at O'Hare into the lower level of the concourse.

Whacky weather indeed.

that ain't something you see every day in NYC.

OK City, maybe, but NYC? When *was* the last recorded tornado in NYC?

I live in tornado alley. If you have a basement, get there. If not, get to ground floor, get to an interior room without windows. Use mattresses, blankets, anything to cover yourself from flying debris. Bathrooms usually work good and tubs also make great shelter.

God bless you all, New York!

Boo Hoo. I grew up in Dallas and there were tornado warnings all the time. It never made front page news nationally. It's just a warning, not even a watch. If a large tornado hits and does some damage, then it's a story. Stormy weather is not.

One would guess it made the front page because it's not common to have tornado warnings in that area.

Tornadoes can strike cities just as they can strike small towns or trailer parks. Duh. There was a tornado warning in Chicago just last week. Tornadoes have struck U.S. cities before; though it's not very common since any particular city occupies a relatively small proportion of total U.S. land area and New York is not known to be in the "tornado alley" like the Midwest.

Infamous Chicago area tornado:
"APR 21, 1967 5:24 pm 33 dead 500 injured
This funnel hit Palos Hills, Oak Lawn, Hometown, Evergreen Park, and the south side of Chicago."

Love the Google.

It was fine. I stepped outside though and was ankle deep in water.

We live in Alabama's Tornado Alley. Definitely NOT COOL. At least with a hurricane you know they're coming days ahead of time.
