Septuplets

CAIRO, Egypt — A 27-year-old Egyptian woman gave birth to septuplets early Saturday in the coastal city of Alexandria, family members and the hospital director said.

Ghazala Khamis was in good condition after having a blood transfusion during her Caesarean section due to bleeding, said Emad Darwish, director of the El-Shatbi Hospital where she gave birth.

The newborns, four boys and three girls, weigh between 3.2 pounds and 6.17 pounds and are in stable condition, Darwish said. They have been placed in incubators in four different hospitals that have special premature baby units, he said.

"This is a very rare pregnancy _ something I have never witnessed over my past 33 years in this profession," Darwish told The Associated Press by phone from the hospital.

Darwish decided to carry out the Caesarean section at the end of Khamis' eighth month of pregnancy due to the pressure on her kidneys. He said Khamis, who already has three daughters, took fertility drugs in an effort to have a son.

Khamis, the wife of a farmer in the northern Egyptian province of Beheira, was admitted to the hospital two months earlier, Darwish said.

"From the initial checkup, I say that none of the babies have any sort of deformities or incomplete organs," Darwish said.

The woman's brother, Khamis Khamis, said even though his sister was trying to conceive more children so she could have a son, the family was astonished when they found out she would give birth to multiple babies.

"We thought about an abortion, but then we felt it's religiously forbidden. So we said 'Let God's will prevail,'" he told the AP by phone.

Egypt's health minister announced that the seven babies will receive free milk and diapers for two years, the brother added.

It's pretty sad that anyone could look at a picture of seven precious little babies and have anything cynical to say about it.

We're going to find many details in this story changing as medical personnel from the rest of the world, like the U.S., start getting a closer look. It may not be a hoax, but close.

For one thing, the amount of food this woman would have had to consume in a day to maintain the growth of 7 fetuses for 8 months to create birth weights of 3 to 6 lbs. would have put Michael Phelps to shame. Her calorie consumption would have to have been far more than her husband could have grown or purchased at the family's poverty scale. We're talking tons of calories, tons of calcium rich dairy, cheese, and so on. And it sounds like milk is pretty scarce in that country to begin with.

All for a boy. Hope all the biggest, healthiest one were all girls!!!

"Khamis, who already has three daughters, took fertility drugs in an effort to have a son."

Whatever doctor administered these drugs should have his license revoked and then be prosecuted for malpractice.

i hate the fact that she took drugs to have a son. a male heir. i mean how much value is that woman in that society without having produced a male offspring right? how valuable is a woman in ours even? i wish the kids well. the free milk and diapers will probably help too!

Free milk and diapers for the babies--a very nice gift. Mom deserves a gift, too. I hope she is well.

Like how she didn't want to selectively reduce via abortion because it was "god's will". Yet taking fertility drugs weren't.

Exactly.

Ten kids at age 27.

Certainly doing her part to destroy the planet. God must want that, too.

Why does having too many kids destroy the planet? The father is a farmer, it is almost certain that the children will follow their father profession in a country like Egypt. I did not know that to some, farming could destroy the planet. If you are too concerned about this planet you start walking to work.

What amazes me is that the was able to carry on into her 8th month and all the children were all a decent weight - she must have been enormous!! Good luck to the family!

Yeah, I was impressed that some of the babies got to six pounds. It's amazing what can be done now a days.

In our news in Egypt , they said she did not take any drugs , her doctor said so.
It is worth to say that this is first time the ministry of health does something charitable and give free milk for two years to the family.
There is shortage in the subsidized milk for babies in Egypt and from time to time ,people can't find it.

Funny they failed to see how they didn't let God's will prevail when she took fertility drugs!
01:10 PM on 08/16/2008
There are thousands of women who take fertility drugs and still don't get pregnant so maybe it did prevail.
