RENO, Nev. — So much for hugging in church. A day after Barack Obama and John McCain exchanged an embrace during a faith forum at a California megachurch, Obama called the U.S. economy a disaster thanks to "John McCain's president, George W. Bush," and chided his Republican rival's campaign team for trying to make him look unpatriotic and weak.

At a town hall meeting with several hundred union members, Obama said he had had a great conversation with McCain at the forum at Saddleback Church sponsored by the popular evangelical pastor Rick Warren. The two candidates shook hands, briefly hugged and stood onstage with Warren, the first time they appeared together in public since the end of the primary season.

But Sunday, after praising the Arizona senator as a "genuine American patriot," the Democratic presidential hopeful got back to business _ methodically tearing into McCain's health care, tax and energy policies and criticizing his advisers.

"McCain says 'Here's my plan, I'm going to drill here, drill now which is something he only came up with two months ago when he started looking at polling," Obama said of McCain's energy policy.

The GOP hopeful has become a vocal proponent of offshore oil drilling as a way to ease U.S. dependence on foreign oil and has criticized Obama for failing to embrace it as a way to help bring down oil prices. Obama noted that McCain had long opposed lifting the moratorium on offshore drilling.

The Illinois senator also criticized McCain's advisers as "the same old folks that brought you George W. Bush. The same team." He noted many had been lobbyists in Washington before McCain asked them to sever all lobbying ties.

Obama added, "They say this other guy is unpatriotic, or this guy likes French people. That's what they said about Kerry," referring to the 2004 Democratic nominee who lost narrowly to Bush. "They try to make it out like Democrats aren't tough enough, aren't macho enough. It's the same strategy."

McCain spokesman Brian Rogers responded, "John McCain has never questioned Sen. Obama's patriotism, but he clearly does question Sen. Obama's experience and judgment, and they do have profound differences of opinion on the best way to reduce our dependence on Mideast oil, bring jobs back to America and keep our nation safe."

Earlier this summer, McCain handed day to day operation of his campaign to Steve Schmidt, a veteran GOP strategist who was a spokesman for Bush during the 2004 campaign. Most of his other top advisers are longtime loyalists who have worked for McCain for years.

Even so, Obama stepped to McCain's defense when a voter criticized his Vietnam era record. A Naval aviator, McCain spent 5- 1/2 years as a prisoner of war there after being shot down and badly wounded.

"Respectfully I'm going to disagree with you on McCain and his service," Obama said. "I think his service was honorable. He deserves respect."

Here is my last post for today, why would Obama piss off the Clinton voters after she stirred up all that white voter value stuff? all McCain has to do is simply "pick up" where she left off. Then to NOT select her as VP ....oooooweeee.,,,talk about the perfect storm. then this Wesley Clark thing its all a little to unseemly.....I pray for this country ...I looked deep into the eyes of McCain soul ... and I saw Bush......

Got any proof?

If you mean there is proof that God doesn't exist, there isn't. 'God doesn't exist' is a negative proposition and those cannot be proved, not logically, anyway. If you are just talking about bread and butter proof that doesn't involve the rules of logic, that's different, but it still won't be conclusive. The most you would ever get is that it is probable that God doesn't exist, and even then you'd get some strong counter arguments.

But this is all very philosophical; I think Hands, unless I am mistaken, would believe in the existence of God on faith. I say that from some other posts of his that I have seen.

I have been silent watching and waiting , to hear Obama speak to the republicans like a man . Unfortunately this has not happened, this whole issue of change is okay..I am a Obama supporter ...but I am afraid that this election is measured in the wrong direction. Its starting to look and feel like Kerry 2 and Obama has better stiffen up and I mean GOOD, The republicans are killing him on this value voter issue, why doesn't his campaign tell the American people what the value voter (Karl Rove) got them the last 2 elections? Obama has to tie that around Karl Roves neck (value voter) ...take the gloves all the way off.........

For all but a handful of people, fighting against abortion doesn't put food in the table, the people who cry loudest about their Second Amendment rights aren't hunting for their suppers, they're shopping at Safeway or Publix or Kroger. Those harping that this a "Christian" nation aren't looking for freedom of religion (or lack thereof) for non-believers. And the resentments and fears that fuel their underlying real concerns have nothing to do with what would make theur daily lives better.

As a supporter of Obama, instead of complaining that he isn't hitting back hard enough to suit your tastes, pick up a rock (figuratively) and throw it. Hit Rove squarely in the eyes, Nail McCain and his campaign -- see Cone of Silence, plagiarized statements and anecdotes (Cross in the Dirt) -- hit them hard. Show up to a McCain town hall and ask the "straight talking Tom Cruise wannabe"-- do your job as supporter, don't just tell us how "concerned" you are and how you're waiting. Now is not the time to wait. Now is the time for action.

So, why is The maverick claiming OBAMA said McCain wasn't in a cone of silence?

The conservative preacher admitted he and McCain made up the cone of silence stuff.

Obama didn't "accuse" The Maverick of cheating. All he said was McCain and the conservative preacher made up a story about the cone of silence. That's true.

I just read something on a thread in the media section of this site, apparently it is the Obama camp that is raising questions 'privately' about the cone of silence and whether McCain might have had the opportunity to cheat. With the New York Times backing them up at least on McCain NOT being in the cone of silernce as we were led to believe.

So it looks as if Obama is indeed going after him on several different fronts. And if the NYT is on this, McCain should be worried...just if he has done something wrong. Here's the link to the media section thread on this matter:

The generations after them have never had to go thru what they went thru. Imagine living thru a world war and the great depression and leaving for us a nation that was intact. We've taken that gift and turned it on its head and have reduced the nation they built into nothingness.

Is is just me, or did McCain shuck and jive?

Every question got dragged out into a long monolog on his personal experience... I don't think the Aemrican people are 'in' this election as far as McCain is concerned... They ran out of time for some of his questions, and he never did answer some in the her and now.

I know the republican leaning pundits were impressed, Pat Buchannan, and the WAPO resident republicans are estatic.... but I don't think he answered questions as he was supposed to.

Folks now are looking at the similarities between others and his cross in the dirt story about one of his guards... seems like he may have stolen it.

And.... he returned to raise hell in wheels, dating many other women while his wife suffered after her accident, and was forced to deal with an altered life style and the kids while he partied.... not sure how much religion he found over there in 'nam if he lost it on the plane ride home.

We've kinda had it with folksy nuts whose minds can't get around larger pictures.

This was a christian venue.

Nearly every organized religion in the United States (not to mention the world), with the notable exception of the Southern Baptists, opposed the Iraq invasion..

Even non-pacifist christians knew this invasion did not meet the standards of theJust War Doctrine.

JohnMcC was (and is) a vociferous supporter of the murderof innocents for profit. He should have been seeking redemption, not applause for zippy one-liners.

May God have mercy on the souls of these murderouswarsupporters and profiteers. For myself, I find the task of forgiveness very difficult.

The US invaded Iraq to get rid of Sadam Hussein, not for profits. There has, in fact, been far far far less war profiteering in this conflict than any conflict since before the Civil War. The profiterring in WWI, WWII, and Vietnam make it look like there is no war profiteering now.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 09:12 AM on 08/18/2008

That is patently false.

Profiteering in both WWI and WWII was illegal, and there were federal officials who policed such things and made certain that it did not happen.

Not until the Republicans managed to get large parts of the miliarty supply dhain privatized did profiteering really take off.
