RENO, Nev. — So much for hugging in church. A day after Barack Obama and John McCain exchanged an embrace during a faith forum at a California megachurch, Obama called the U.S. economy a disaster thanks to "John McCain's president, George W. Bush," and chided his Republican rival's campaign team for trying to make him look unpatriotic and weak.

At a town hall meeting with several hundred union members, Obama said he had had a great conversation with McCain at the forum at Saddleback Church sponsored by the popular evangelical pastor Rick Warren. The two candidates shook hands, briefly hugged and stood onstage with Warren, the first time they appeared together in public since the end of the primary season.

But Sunday, after praising the Arizona senator as a "genuine American patriot," the Democratic presidential hopeful got back to business _ methodically tearing into McCain's health care, tax and energy policies and criticizing his advisers.

"McCain says 'Here's my plan, I'm going to drill here, drill now which is something he only came up with two months ago when he started looking at polling," Obama said of McCain's energy policy.

The GOP hopeful has become a vocal proponent of offshore oil drilling as a way to ease U.S. dependence on foreign oil and has criticized Obama for failing to embrace it as a way to help bring down oil prices. Obama noted that McCain had long opposed lifting the moratorium on offshore drilling.

The Illinois senator also criticized McCain's advisers as "the same old folks that brought you George W. Bush. The same team." He noted many had been lobbyists in Washington before McCain asked them to sever all lobbying ties.

Obama added, "They say this other guy is unpatriotic, or this guy likes French people. That's what they said about Kerry," referring to the 2004 Democratic nominee who lost narrowly to Bush. "They try to make it out like Democrats aren't tough enough, aren't macho enough. It's the same strategy."

McCain spokesman Brian Rogers responded, "John McCain has never questioned Sen. Obama's patriotism, but he clearly does question Sen. Obama's experience and judgment, and they do have profound differences of opinion on the best way to reduce our dependence on Mideast oil, bring jobs back to America and keep our nation safe."

Earlier this summer, McCain handed day to day operation of his campaign to Steve Schmidt, a veteran GOP strategist who was a spokesman for Bush during the 2004 campaign. Most of his other top advisers are longtime loyalists who have worked for McCain for years.

Even so, Obama stepped to McCain's defense when a voter criticized his Vietnam era record. A Naval aviator, McCain spent 5- 1/2 years as a prisoner of war there after being shot down and badly wounded.

"Respectfully I'm going to disagree with you on McCain and his service," Obama said. "I think his service was honorable. He deserves respect."

I would have thought in a christian venue, McC would have claimed to be proud of the Bushies large financial committment to HIV ravaged countries.

(yes, I'm sure Bushcronies have a finger in that pie. Nonetheless, it's probably the only half-way decent thing the man did in 8 years)

But no. McC's christian virtue led him to be proud of RobertsandAlito.

And Jesus said, 'Let there be more conservative lawyers!"

I also find it odd that in a venue sponsored by christians, a philandering, adulterous divorcee like McC garners applause for his 'position' on gaymarriage.

He doesn't honor the vows of 'straight' marriage, but has firm opinions about gayones?

It is amazing to me that people don't realize how they are being manipulated by the big oil companies. Oil companies are in business, as all companies, to make money for their stockholders and executives. They will get their oil for their refineries from the least expensive source. Until drilling more wells in the US becomes cheaper than buying oil from overseas they will not drill for oil in the US. They just want o add to their leases in case they ever find it is more economical to pursue that avenue rather than buy it from foreign sources. They cannot and will not go to new sources of crude unless it is more profitable to do so. With the huge investments in overseas production and distribution (pipelines and tankers) it will be a long time before offshore or onshore drilling in the US would be more profitable. And the price of gas will continue to rise no matter where the oil comes from. Simple supply and demand. Get rid of the notion that oil companies are in the market to provide cheap gasoline for Americans. They are not charitable institutions.

"With the huge investments in overseas production and distribution (pipelines and tankers) it will be a long time before offshore or onshore drilling in the US would be more profitable. "

True. But profitability can be created artificially through tax-supported subsidies. Oil companies don't care where the money comes from. If they hold leases to off-shore oil fields, the next step is to buy the necessary legislation that will make drilling 'profitable', regardless of the true cost of that drilling. This will be done at tax payers expense.

Personally, I tend to be leery of any christian who feel the need to build a multi-million dollar mega-church.

I seem to recall fields and street corners working quite well for the Lord.

How about a little less popularity and a little more christianity?

{6:5} And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the
hypocrites [are:] for they love to pray standing in the
synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may
be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their
reward.

{6:6} But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy
closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father
which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall
reward thee openly.

{6:7} But when ye pray, use not vain
repetitions, as the heathen [do:] for they think that they shall
be heard for their much speaking.

No mention of the very odd ability of McCain to answer questions that he had not yet been asked or the fact that he was not in the "cone of silence" at the church during a LIVE broadcast of Obama's interview the New York Times, LA Times, Washington Post, etc.

Just an effusive editorial from William Kristol on how succint and clear the formerly doddering McCain was in his performance.

Please,please,please- someone, anyone from CNN or Fox News or any of the major papers- see the light and report the truth about this latest debacle!

McCain will destroy the world, and take us with him.
The only way to stop the old man who tells us to get off his lawn, is for Obama to stop taking the middle ground. There is no middle, there is only black and white. If Obama doesn't get fierce, we going to go to war with Iran, throw the country into a depression, and cause the country to crumble.
Sad, but Obama will lose if he keeps going to the middle. Where the hell is his passion?

I watched bit and pieces of the "church debate" on CNN last night and I am seeing McCain continuing to make gains on Obama. Since his overseas trip, Obama has been sliding in polls. I think the Berlin speech might have been a tad premature. Obama might have gotten a bit ahead of himself. We need a VP pick that will reinvigorate the Obama camp and nullify McCain's momentum. This is a crucial moment in this campaign. I hope Obama make a bold move on the VP. The VP must appeal to the independents and I have to tell you Biden is not it. He is too cerebral and his own presidential campaigns garnered him virtually no public support.

The primary fight has taken its toll. Obama needs to bring in a fresh team for the contest.

Did we watch the same "debate"? Obama sounded thoughtful and intelligent. We all laughed our way through McCain's performance. He answered with so many lines from his usual speeches that we were taking turns seeing if we could guess his answers before he gave them and we were right every time. He wandered off into story after story then would just abruptly cut off and not even relate back to the question. I think the problem is an electorate that repeatedly fails to vote its interests and elected Bush/Cheney not once but twice...

It's amazing when McCain talked of his war heroism, he didn't mention how he gave away secrets to the enemies. Anyone hear of Phillip Butler he was in prison with McCain. Strangely enough he got different treatment than McCain.Col Earl Hopper was there also and he tells it different than McCain. Just what we need a guy who was a traitor to his country for President. Isn't it strange how McCain doesn't have any of his old war buddies coming out and talking about his time in prison ?

I almost became physically ill watching McCain pander to the "agents of intolerance" (McCain, 2000) at the church "civil forum."

But, if that wasn't bad enough, I was disgusted that the pew dwellers seem to have not learned their lesson in electing someone just because they say "God," wear a "flag," carry a bible, or "sound tough" and "certain."

McCain would give these reactionary Christians even less than Bush did; and Bush really was "one of them." One wonders how long these political Christists will allow themselves to be used for big-money interests before they recognize that their votes have been exploited?

So. I think I got it.

When John McCain and the conservative pastor say "McCain is in isolation" what they mean is "he's on his way to the venue".

When they say "we have him in a cone of silence" what they mean is, it's actually an honor system.

And John McCain threatens NBC to quash discussion of this? Why? It's no big deal, right?

I'm fine with an honor system.

Weird that they'd lie about it, though. What an elaborate charade! Two players, too!

If you're asked "did you enjoy your time in the cone in of silence" (I'm paraphrasing) and you weren't IN a "cone of silence" do you say "I had my ear up against the wall"?

Or do you say " cone of silence? actually, I was on my way to the venue"?

I'm thinking I don't play my part in that charade, if I'm John McCain, but maybe I'm setting the bar too high.

In an ideal world, nice guys wouldn't finish last. But, we don't live in an ideal world. That Bush Junior got elected on dirty, rotten politics ought to slap you out of any illusion about how the world works. I'd rather not go into the gutter politics. And Obama may, in fact, be uncomfortable engaging in it.

But, lest it be forgotten McCain the Idealist 2000 operated the same way. He thought running an honorable campaign was the way to go. But, Shrub quickly disabused him of that. Which is why McCain has surrounded himself with the practioners of gutter politics.

McCain isn't as good at it as Shrub is, but he's learning fast. Let's hope Obama learns fast also and hits back hard -- rebutting the lies the GOP is spinning out by hammering on McCain's expedient changes of positions (permanent tax cuts for the richest Americans, offshore oil drilling, agents of intolerance).

We don't need another pacifist Kerry getting hammered into the ground in silence.

As another poster suggested, read Frank Rich's recent op-ed regarding McCain. Frank Rich nails it again. The rest of the MSM misses it time and again, not Rich.

Thank heavens! Let's get the policy differences out there. Also, Rick Warren's taken McCain's word, he didn't hear some of the questions, so I'll take it. If it comes out McCain's fibbing later, so be it. I don't know what's worse. Lies to your wife who has cancer or to a clergyman? Let's hope we don't have to find out.

Now, what about McCain stating he's appointing Corsi Secretary of Edcuation. He could call his education program "No Child Left Unfooled".

Did he take McCain's word or some campaign lackey's word? Remember, McCain doesn't speak for his campaign.
