The Chicago Tribune reports on a brutal baseball game between the US and China that featured five American batters getting hit by Chinese pitches:

Our relations with China were nearly broken at the plate.

A near-brawl with our Olympic hosts in a baseball game won 9-1 by the U.S. team Monday night resulted in an unexpected outbreak of tension for the international pastime.

Three members of China's team were ejected from the game.

Two collisions at home plate led to an injury to a Chinese catcher and a confrontation with another.

An American player was then hit in the head with a pitch. He was rushed to a hospital, where he was diagnosed with a concussion.

"That was the last straw," said U.S. center fielder Nate Schierholtz, another of the principals.

What idiotic trivia is happening in China?

Oh. Yeah. The useless Olympics.

I think there are better things to spend time, money and effort on that the economic black hole of the "Olympic Games".

ummm... NeverRepublican....MY POINT EXACTLY. I don't know why you are slamming someone who agrees with you, but I guess some people are just frothing at the mouth too much to understand irony.

The Olympic games are about the most trivial crap going on in the world right now, and they're getting the most attention. Is that clear? Do I need to explain it to you further?

So when in the mid-90's Clinton worked for and signed all those one-sided trade treaty's with China, I didn't hear people like you say one word. BTW, what do you think those Seattle protests/riot was about?.......and not just China, but NAFTA, GATT, you name it. Why I still remember his veep, Al Gore, campaigning for these trade agreements in a debate v. Ross Perot on the Larry King Show. Oh, how everybody forgets.

Oh...boo hoo American baseball...

I bet getting hit by a pitch doesn't hurt half as bad as getting blown up in Iraq.

By the way...baseball and softball have been VOTED OUT for the up coming games of 2012...

WHY???

Because the sport pretty much sucks...

Yeah the Badminton, Trampoline, syncronized swimming, handball (a variation that I hadn't seen before) are all SO much better than baseball and softball.

Yeah, wonder why they were voted out.....oh yeah, USA dominates in those sports and don't dominate in badminton.

But all the thugs are in football and basketball.............as far as getting blown-up in Iraq, you are correct. But I suppose the same can be said for the streets of 'major-city USA' Where MORE young Americans have been murdered then in Iraq. And I believe all these cities have democratic (not republican) administrations.

No one who understands baseball and appreciates the strategy involved and the athleticism required to play it well would ever say that baseball is boring.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 09:07 PM on 08/24/2008

No, it's because the major leagues wouldn't send their best players since MLB doesn't want to interrupt its season to help fill not just the American roster, but those from Latin America as well. Now I personally would like to see MLB change its mind on this, but it ain't gonna happen and they came up with the WBC to try to replace the olympic baseball tournament.

Anywhere, why do Americans think dogs are worth more than cows or calves? What's the justification? Seriou answers please.

I think it is because cows don't interact with humans very well.

I saw a report recently where a dog wouldn't leave his owners side for two weeks after the man died in the forest. Many other instances of dogs helping their owners etc.

the U.S. deserved it after their second runner plowed over the catcher who was standing on the first-base side of the plate. The first collision could be seen as tough baseball because the guy was in the basepath, but the second one was clearly wrong and a message. The guy could have slid easily but chose to brutally take the guy down who wasn't even in his way.

As a long-time baseball player, fan and coach, I can totally understand the beaning. The U.S. asked for it.

When that guy took out the chineese guy it reminded me of that jack-idiot Charles barkley in 1992 Olympics...

He acted like a CLASS A JERK when he was knocking players around on the basketball court...

Didn't suprise me after that the world pretty much crushed american basketball.

Barkley was the poster child for the NON-OLYMPIC SPIRIT...

They should have thrown him out...I'm glad the Chineese decided to take aim...

We deserved it.

then the second collision at the plate was a retaliation for the first beaning... things escalate.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 03:25 PM on 08/19/2008

You need to see the original incident to get the context.....USA baserunner went WAY out of his way to take out the catcher at home plate. Catcher was most definitely NOT blocking the plate. Most knowledgeable baseball people will agree SOME retaliation was justified, but the Chinese went nuclear by beaning five guys.

yes, America is wrong to be outraged by this. Its a game and no one died, laugh it off you won.

Whats outrageous is how juvenile, racist and uninformed these comments get. I see posts that are suggesting Chinese people eat dogs and cats and other completely unfounded and ridiculous insults. It really goes back to my point of many Americans being seriously uneducated.

Had this happened in a regular MLB game, it would have been shown every 30 minutes on every network, and ESPN would have to launch ESPN3 on very short notice.

Since this happened during the Chinese Olympics, it sure seems rather quiet out there.

A few years ago I was offered a job in China teaching Chinese how to play baseball. I couldn't take it due to illness.
As classless and dangerous as their behavior was, they probably learned it from an American. All around it was a disgusting display of behavior and the Chinese should be barred from the rest of the tournament.
Were they, who knows with NBC's lousy coverage.

Tank Man at the plate, swings, drills it past the short stop to the wall, rounds first, goes for second, the throw, missed, goes for third, the throw, off the glove to the dugout, Tank Man heads for home, it's going to be close, the throw, he slides, is grabbed by three guys, and...gone, nobody knows where.

Players form both teams should have been ejected. There was no need for the US player to take out the Chinese catcher. The catcher was not blocking the plate and the ball was not going to get there. The base runner had to go out of his way to clobber him. With and eight run lead, there was even less of a reason to nail the catcher. The base runner should have been ejected. That would have probably eliminated the other players being hit. Having said that intentionally hitting a player should also cause the pitcher to be ejected.

this game was not played in the Olympic spirit and was poorly officiated.

Yes, you're right DesertLight. We all know, after being enlightened of course, that we must only take action in our own interests if that action has passed the "global test". Therefore before retaliating the U.S. team should have filed a petition at the U.N., even if 18 or 19 similar requests were approved prior to the current crisis. After all, you never know if the Sudan has changed its mind on violence in baseball. Then of course we would have to take into consideration the interests of the French and the Russians. What if the French are making money selling nuclear energy to the Chinese to light their stadium? That cannot be disrupted. And what if the Russians are giving the Chinese instruction on how to develop bats that skirt international standards? Certainly we shouldn't upset them. After the game has been delayed for six years, and the appropriate paperwork has cleared the Security Council, we can take appropriate action. Of course by then most of the players will be out of baseball but the important thing is that we will have looked out for everyone's interest. Except ours of course. And isn't that really the most important thing, to be "well liked"?
