Five American Batters Hit By Chinese Pitchers In Brutal Olympics Game (VIDEO)

The Chicago Tribune reports on a brutal baseball game between the US and China that featured five American batters getting hit by Chinese pitches:

Our relations with China were nearly broken at the plate.

A near-brawl with our Olympic hosts in a baseball game won 9-1 by the U.S. team Monday night resulted in an unexpected outbreak of tension for the international pastime.

Three members of China's team were ejected from the game.

Two collisions at home plate led to an injury to a Chinese catcher and a confrontation with another.

An American player was then hit in the head with a pitch. He was rushed to a hospital, where he was diagnosed with a concussion.

"That was the last straw," said U.S. center fielder Nate Schierholtz, another of the principals.

The plays at home plate were clean hard baseball hits.

It's perfectly acceptable to hit the batter in retaliation, but hit him in the leg, not in the head.

The Chinese overreacted and could have killed Matt LaPorta.

Seeing how the Olympic committee has bent over for the Chinese by allowing them to change rules and scores in gymnastics, I am surprised they didn't say change it to make the score China 10 US 9.

The best justice of all was already done in the game: USA beat China 9-1... that qualifies as a shellacking. Any fights, ejections, headhunting, et. al., on the Chinese side just look plain sad. They lost the game, lost badly, and looked pathetic in the way they did it.

Note that I have great respect for the countless Chinese among their populace of 1.3 billion or so who no doubt work hard, lead decent lives, have their hearts and values in the right place. Such people were apparently not on the roster of the Chinese team for this particular game.

It would seem not.

Tradition, not the rulebook, would lead to the pitcher throwing at the next batter to the plate after the collision. NOT AT THE HEAD THOUGH. Usually in the back/hip.

This would most likely lead to either warning being given to both teams, OR the toher team's pitcher throwing at an opposing batter. NOT IN THE HEAD.

At that point warnings would ALWAYS be given.

If three players were ejected from the Chinese team, the manager should also have been ejected for allowing/condoning five hit batters.

In MLB there would also be fines/suspensions. The suspensions are what the teams dread.

Unfortunately, there is no such recourse against the Chinese team, since their playtime was done anyway.

The Beijing Olympics, with the exception of Michael Phelps' wins, seems to have become infamous for the Chinese misdeeds. There has always been much made about the spirit of international brotherhood of the Olympics, something which has been sorely lacking in these. Then again, it would be a great deal to ask a government such as China's to behave according to the rules. That would be like asking Bush to follow the rules. In both cases, they prefer to break them and make new ones.

I take it from your comment you've never actually seen a baseball game. If a Major League pitcher tried to take a batter's head off like that he'd be fined and suspended for a long while. The Chinese played dirty, period. They richly deserved the humiliating final score.
