LOS ANGELES (AP) _ "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation" has solved the mystery of who will replace departing CBS series star William Petersen: It's Laurence Fishburne.

Fishburne, an Emmy and Tony winner, will be introduced in the ninth episode of the upcoming 10th season, the network told The Associated Press on Monday. He'll play a forensics scientist with a secret.

Fishburne is a "CSI" newcomer in more ways than one. Asked if he's a fan, he told a teleconference Monday that he was embarrassed to admit he'd never watched before he was approached by producers.

"But I am now," he said. He screened past episodes that were engaging and "kind of dark and moody, like the work I've been involved in," he said.

"Wow, this will work," Fishburne recalled thinking.

He was their top choice, said executive producers Carol Mendelsohn and Naren Shankar, with a deeply intelligent approach to his work that matches the drama's spirit.

This is the first ongoing series role for the in-demand film and stage actor since, improbably enough, he played Cowboy Curtis on "Pee-wee's Playhouse" in the late 1980s. He's not stepping away from movies with "CSI," Fishburne said, but embarking on a "welcome change."

Fishburne will play a college lecturer and former pathologist who is focused on why people commit acts of violence. The character is nameless for now but has been dubbed "The Professor."

The air date for Petersen's final episode has yet to be determined but will be early next year. Petersen has been with the series since it debuted in fall 2000 and will remain a "CSI" executive producer, the network said.

Fishburne's character has a deep connection to his work: "The Professor" shares certain biological characteristics associated with aggressiveness and criminal behavior, Shankar said.

Shankar said the show wasn't backing away from CBS programming chief Nina Tassler's previous description of the character, in which she said he shared the genetic makeup of serial killers.

Subsequent research has since shown that "in reality, there is no such thing," so the character is changing course, Shankar said. How his nature will play out in stories has yet to be determined, he and Mendelsohn said.

Fishburne's character, whom Tassler said was keeping his background to himself, meets members of the "CSI" team during a murder investigation and ends up joining them.

Fishburne, 47, received an Oscar nomination for his portrayal of Ike Turner in 1993's "What's Love Got to Do With It" and a Tony in 1992 for "Two Trains Running." He was a Tony nominee this year for the one-man show, "Thurgood," about Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall.

His film credits include the "Matrix" sci-fi films, in which he played Morpheus; "Apocalypse Now"; "The Color Purple"; "Mystic River"; "21"; "Akeelah and the Bee"; and "Biker Boyz." He also is a writer and director.

"CBS asked us, `Who's at the top of your dream list?'" Mendelsohn and Shankar said in a joint statement. "Without hesitation, we said Laurence Fishburne. He is a powerful and intense actor, with an incredible range."

Fishburne earned an Emmy for the 1993 premiere episode of Fox's "Tribeca" and another for the movie "Miss Evers' Boys," which marked rare TV projects for the actor. Early in his career, he appeared in shows including "Miami Vice" and "Hill Street Blues."

The long-running "CSI" remains key for CBS: It finished last season as the network's top-rated series, ranking No. 9 among all shows with an average weekly audience of 17 million. Spinoffs "CSI: Miami" and "CSI: New York" ranked 16th and 28th, respectively.

Producers have been mum about upcoming plot points. But they said Petersen's character, Gil Grissom, will be reappraising his life after years of high-tech forensics investigations with the Las Vegas Police Department and after facing personal turmoil.

"CSI," which begins its new season Oct. 9, is ready to deal with Petersen's loss, said Shankar.

"What makes shows go off the rails is they forget who they are. We're a crime-mystery-forensics drama" and that won't change, Shankar said in July.

An interesting choice, I think he's a solid actor, but Gil Grissom is the reason I watch the original CSI and NOT the spin-offs. I haven't liked the Catherine character in years, and now without Sara, without Warrick, and now without Grissom I suspect this season will end up without me as well.

I love the show. However missing Dourdan and Peterson, Fishburne has BIG, Big shoes to fill. No doubt, he's excellent, let's see how the chemistry works;^)

Laurence Fishburne is one of the most versatile actors out there. He will be great on CSI. I'll miss Peterson and Dourdan, but Fishburne will given this show a much needed change.

Looks interesting to say the least. Will miss William "Grissom" Petersen though. I happened to like all of the CSI trilogies on CBS. Good luck to what ever your are going to be doing Grissom. Those rerun cheques will be making your life easy for the next 20 years.

Even though there is no "green" pill? ;-)

Not taking anything away from Laurence Fishburne, but Petersen is the anchor of CSI's ensemble cast and without him, I believe the chemistry will suffer badly. I understand Jorja Fox will make a few appearances this season, also ... hopefully, they'll tie up that storyline and not leave us Grissom-Siddle fans hanging! I've been a William Petersen fan forever; he's the reason I started watching this show. Big shoes to fill. Good luck, Laurence!

I know what you mean
when Mandy patinkin left Criminal Minds I had a hard time getting into the Joe Montegna role

but i thought Liev Schrieber did a pretty good job of filling in for Petersen last season
so I'm going to hope Fishburne brings his A game and it's a great new show

I did NOT like Liv's character one bit.

I really have my reservations on Fishburne's ability to hold this ensemble cast together. Of course, we also have to replace Brown, so the jury is still out...

It still can't be as abysmal as CSI: Miami. GAWD AWFUL!!!!

The only way they can make this work is that Grissom leaves to be with Sara. That leaves the door open for some return spots from both of them.

But I really don't like the "dna of a serial killer" storyline they're going for.

And I do believe Grissom anchors the show. Without him, it's not the same. What happens when you fix what isn't broke? YOU BREAK IT.

How many times has this been done? And how many shows have survived?

oops...I meant PeeWee's Playhouse, not Big Adventure, which we all know was the movie. Also hilarious, but the Playhouse was better.

I remember Lawrence from his 'Cowboy Curtis' days on PeeWee's Big Adventure...I loved watching that show with my little girls on Saturday morning...Miss Yvonne's yummy tulle dresses with ten tons of cleavage...Chairy...making snacks with PeeWee "Mmmm...salad-y" .
Good luck and lighten up about your Cowboy Curtis days; a lot of people loved you and that silly funny show. I miss PeeWee too.

PeeWee's Playhouse was a great show!
when my son was little that was his fave show.

Do you remember when PeeWee put the pair of underwear on his head? A friend was watching the show and called me saying that she was right all along, "PeeWee is a freak!" My son was about 4 at the time and sure enough, he began to walk around with his tiny underwear on his head. I have nothing but good memories about PeeWee's playhouse.

Disappointing.

Fishburne is not one of my favorite actors. And I don't much care for the premise.

I guess I'll tune in when Petersen does his guest spots. Other than that....blah.

I DO like Fisburne but I agree this is disappointing. I just can't see him doing this role, I was hoping for Kurt Russell. Maybe we'll be surprised.
