McCain "Evil" Iraq Story Questionable

Politico:

A reader points out that John McCain's example of pure evil yesterday rests on a story asserted by Iraqi officials, but since cast into doubt.

"Not long ago in Baghdad, Al Qaeda took two young women who were mentally disabled and put suicide vests on them, sent them into a marketplace, and by remote control, detonated those suicide vests," McCain told Rick Warren. "If that isn't evil, you have to tell me what is."

The horrifying story that terrorists used two women with Down Syndrome to carry bombs was a sensation in February, but The New York Times later suggested it hadn't happened that way.

This does not seem like an urban legend to me. An urban legend usually has some sort of moral kickback in it, with wrong-doers or fools having misfortune. This story is looks more like a malicious rumour than an urban legend.

And when we all got to see each other and talk to each other directly, instead of tapping through walls, we had 24 hours a day, seven days a week to talk to each other, and we shared stories. I vaguely recall that story being told, among other stories."

Calling sources who might serve as witnesses to verify a charge? I guess that's much harder than say, making sh*t up out of whole cloth. Of course Sullivan and other desperate lefties are more interesting in cheap smears than anything else.

I imagine this bit of news has forced Keith Olbermann to rework the first half of his show.

Urban legends are sui generis. They spring up on their own. The mentally handicapped suicide bomber story, by contrast, was straight out of Pentagon psyops, the same people who gave us camouflaged teddy bears in Noriega's office back in 86, Qadaffi cross-dressing photos from the same time period, and that 2003 story of finding a framed portrait of Jenna Bush on the night stand of on of Saddam's sons. How many time have we heard that tale about insurgents using a conveniently situated line of walking schoolgirls for cover? How often have we heard that local around Mosul refer to Stryker Brigade as "ghost soldiers"? There's only so much propaganda hooey a guy can stomach.

The premise of many of the Politico comments is that if the story is true, then it was ok that we invaded Iraq because al Qaeda is monstrous. That if the enemy is that bad, then we did and are doing the right thing. This conclusion is so wrong on so many levels. Are that many people so logic-challenged?
