What's Your Reaction?
Mccain

FactCheck.Org reports that John McCain's "Outrageous" ad:

Republican presidential candidate John McCain cites three absurd-sounding examples of pork-barrel spending in a recent ad: a "bridge to nowhere," a study of the DNA of bears and a Woodstock museum.

McCain is known for fighting against earmarks, the other term lawmakers use for funding of pet projects back home. But he appears to have chosen these three because they're easy to mock, not because he had significant involvement in removing them from the budget.

* He never specifically went after the "bridge to nowhere," and he was absent for key votes on its funding.
* While he tried to cut money for several other projects in the same bill, he never proposed cutting the bear study and voted for the final bill containing it.
* He wasn't present for the most important votes on the Woodstock museum, including one on an amendment he co-sponsored to kill the earmark and divert some of the funds.

...

The ad goes on to criticize an earmark that provided "$3 million to study the DNA of bears in Montana." This is not the first time McCain has poked fun at the bear project. He first mentioned it on the Senate floor, while discussing the 2003 Omnibus Appropriations Bill that included funding for the project:

McCain (Senate floor, Feb. 13, 2003): Because these appropriations are never discussed with nonmembers of the Appropriations Committee, one can only imagine and conjure up an idea as to how this might be used. Approach a bear: That bear cub over there claims you are his father, and we need to take your DNA. Approach another bear: Two hikers had their food stolen by a bear, and we think it is you. We have to get the DNA. The DNA doesn't fit, you got to acquit, if I might.

Good laugh lines, maybe, but the United States Geological Service's Northern Divide Grizzly Bear Project didn't study DNA for paternity tests or forensics. Rather, it explored a means of estimating Montana's grizzly bear population by analyzing bear fur snagged on barbed wire. The project was funded partly by federal appropriations - about $1 million per year in add-ons to USGS in 2003 through 2005, $400,000 in 2006 and $300,000 in 2007, plus a $1.1 million earmark through the Forest Service in 2004, according to the study's principal researcher, Katherine C. Kendall. Part of that funding was doled out as part of the omnibus appropriations bill McCain discussed in February 2003.

Despite the fun McCain had ridiculing the bear project on the Senate floor, he didn't actually try to remove it from the bill. He did introduce several amendments, including three to reduce funding for projects he considered wasteful or harmful, but none removing the grizzly bear project appropriations. And despite his criticisms, he voted in favor of the final bill.

I am continually disheartened at the people who rise to power in this country. A simple look into the rationale behind the study would have been sufficient to understand the request and see that the request was a reasonable one. Many of the earmarks that get put into spending bills are, in fact, reasonable. Does McCain offer up a different more cost-effective way of tracking the population of this threatened species over the 8 million acre habitat? Of course not. Instead, he mocks something he obviously knows nothing about. That seems to be his preferred way of communicating - or am I missing something?

McCain is no Thomas Jefferson.

He completely lacks any sense of civic virtue apart from military service.
If McCain were in charge, we wouldn't even have public libraries or public education.

He really has no clue about how a representative deomocracy is supposed to function, let a lone the founding father's vision for this country.

But I guess that's what you get when you nominate a septigenarian millitary brat for POTUS.

So McDrool, wasn't there for the first vote. Voted for the DNA bill. Then wasn't there for the vote on the third bill. Wow we Arizona residents are so lucky aren't we? To have such a dependable senator. Mc Drool can't even earn his pay now. Why in the world would anyone want this fossil as our president. Check the facts on factcheck.org. The guy only shows up to pick up his paycheck. Otherwise, his senate seat is empty 73% of the time. I want a real president. Not one that's playing president.

He is an idiot. Talking about a 3 million dollar scientific study on bears when we are spending 10 billion dollars a month in Iraq.

Great Caesars balls do we have to apply the Bizzaro world rules to McCain and just think the opposite of what he says. I'm dizzy trying to figure out where he stands and what he stands for outside of saying anything real or unreal true or untrue to be elected.

Sadly, millions are too stupid to understand this.

They deserve to suffer for their stupidity, but they will take us with them.

According to Rasmussen figures released the other day, 55% of the people polled think the MSM is in the tank for Sen Obama as opposed to 19% who think they want McCain elected POTUS.

Do you think McCain keeps making mistakes because he KNOWS the MSM isn't watching? Otherwise they'd be calling him on all his misstatements. If they were doing their job correctly, they would be watching BOTH candidates and would call them BOTH out, when they mis-speak. They have turned a blind eye on McCain, and he gets excused on just about everything. Oh, I forgot. He's a POW.

It seems being a POW opens many good doors for Sen McCain. Unfortunately, it closes many too; like TRUTHFULNESS!

Too bad direct questions like this won't be asked during the debates because he was a POW.

Off topic: But also sorry to say that over at the KOS there is evidence of Rick Warren making some very
bad abortion comments - as it applies to BO. Check it out

HE VOTED TO FUND IT!!!

Why keep asking of MSM is covering or calling McCain out on his crapola. Did you not know that the MSM is skeered of him. They is afraid if they calls him out on this stink, he will be mean to them, yell at them and not let them touchor polish his POW war medals. The MSM worships McCain and his war hero, POW status. He is an Icon in their minds. But with all the hoopla, I wonder why all the other Vietnam POW's are being ignored by the MSM. They should have as much glory as McCain, so why are they not wallowing at and kissing the feet of the rest of those surviving POW's. I know that really sounds stupid, right? My point exactly this whole thing about McCain being untouchable is patheticly sad and out right silly. I can see McCain standing there in front of the MSM singing the song.. "You cant touch this"....LMAO.

chalk this up as another thing the MSM will let slide.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 04:13 PM on 08/18/2008

the MSM will let everything slide unless Obama calls them out on it. Obama should just issue a press release about this and then the MSM will want to cover it because it will be controversy. That's why McCain's camp does - they just issue press releases about everything they don't like, and then the MSM covers the story.
