Hey

A few weeks ago, the Huffington Post's Seth Colter Walls reported that Republican officials and outside groups were set to launch a smear campaign against Barack Obama, accusing the Senator of enabling infanticide.

The issue stems from a state version of the federal Born Alive Infant Protection Act, which proposed that any "viable" fetus surviving a late-term abortion receive sustaining medical care. Obama opposed the measure not because he disagreed with overarching purpose, but because of objectionable side-provisions such as a failure to immunize doctors from legal prosecution.

It was, Seth concluded, a ginned-up argument made more complicated by the fact the bill passed in 2005, "free of any other measures Obama had previously opposed."

And yet, the GOP seems hell bent on furthering the line of attack. In the minutes preceding Saturday's values forum with the presidential candidates, Pat Buchanan discussed Obama's alleged vulnerabilities on the issue of abortion before letting it slip that conservative groups were set to hit the Illinois Democrat on charges of infanticide.

"Barack Obama on the issue of life is further left than anybody in the Congress of the United States. He not only pro abortion but pro-abortion on demand, he is pro-late term abortion, pro-partial birth abortion, he objected to the Supreme Court ruling that upheld the ban. But most important, Barack Obama and the Illinois legislature supported, or rather opposed a bill that would have protected the life of babies born from a botched abortion who were alive, three times. And I do know Republicans are planning, or rather 527s are planning attack ads on this and I will be interested to see if Rick Warren brings it up."

Already, it seems, the wheels are turning. On Sunday, the Associated Press reported that, "a group purporting to tell the "real truth" about Barack Obama's views on abortion wants a judge to rule it is not subject to federal election restrictions on fundraising and advertising. The Real Truth About Obama Inc., a group formed by anti-abortion activists, is trying to establish a Web site and air radio ads. But the group's attorney says his clients fear they will be prosecuted for breaking federal rules that restrict fundraising and advertising by political action committees, or PACs."

As for Warren, he didn't bring up the issue of infanticide during the values forum, though he did quiz Obama to define when "a baby get[s] human rights."

"Well," replied the Senator. "I think that whether you are looking at it from a theological perspective or a scientific perspective, answering that question with specificity is above my pay grade. But let me just speak more generally about the issue of abortion because this is something obviously the country wrestles with. One thing that I'm absolutely convinced of is there is a moral and ethical content to this issue. So I think that anybody who tries to deny the moral difficulties and gravity of the abortion issue, I think is not paying attention."

This type of tripe is meant for troglodyte consumption and does not have to have any basis in fact.

It is what they do!! They create myths, repeat them as facts & say GFY!, to any who challenge them.

It seems that Buchanan's ear is always very close to the next thing being leaked. What are his favorite numbers? Could they be 5 or 2 or 7?

mcevil is counting on the fact that no one will come to Obama's defense because he is "other"

mcevil can only get away with his vicious lies and attacks. He believes because of the polls saying it

is a close race that his divisive behavior is working.

He is actually trying to divide the country, thus win the race. He will do anything the country allows him to.

Here is a direct quote from Pat Buchanan on John McCain "He will make Cheney look like Ghandi".

How many orphans has the Iraq war produced, how many souls lost? McCain will bring more war.

Seems to me that some of that 7.8 million raised in one day by O might have been best served sending it to an orphanage. Don't you think?

Nice try...all this is a red herring because McCain is exhibiting a loss of cognitive abilities associated with old age. Everyday those behind those 527's are projecting their anger onto Obama because McCain is the worse Presidential candidate ever. Oh well as least McCain has the sympathy votes. The GOP and evangelican christians will vote for a President they feel sorry for.

Rove can't cheat any other way so he plans to use this as his attack du jour. The problem is that Obamma never said he was pro abortion, only pro choice. The difference here, is that If anyone bothered to listen to his response Sat. night, Obamma clearly spelled his stand to the public. He opposes abortion, wants to find ways to limit them, except in extreme cases of rape, incest, mollestation. If the woman's life is in jepardy and they see no way out for either, then, hey, let the doctor do what is in the best intrest of his patient. You can't always save both. Not possible. Even the best docs will tell you that. Ok, that said, he wants to allow for birth control, to limit unwanted pregnancy, provide healthcare for women, children, ok the morning after pill after rape or incest has occurred as it should be. Evangelicals don't want to foot the bills, healthcare for unwanted babies, don't want to pay for programs to make it possible to keep the kids, but they won't allow for birth control either. Can't have it both ways. Let em try to smear him, we have plenty to smear the GOP with.

The Republican’s ownership and exploitation/politizaton of the abortion issue will the death of America.

The Democrats need to find their own highly charged emotional issue to exploit for political gain. It definitely has to have the emotional gravitas of what appears on the surface to be the life and death of something innocent and helpless. It must be something that requires no deep thought, just a gut-level reaction. It MUST be something so inextricably tied to the idea of ourselves as kind and decent, such yhat anyone who dare oppose it could simply be cast aside as evil.

And for pete’s sake, let’s don’t ever consider a rational solution to the problem, which is to get governments (of all stripes) out of the equation, stop fiddling around with Creationism and beef up the science curriculum so the biological fact that we are, in fact, related in form and function to all other life forms on this planet, with sperm and eggs galore, and, like raccoons and Robins, not every fusion of the two is meant to result in a viable, much less “sacred” life.

As the young folks say – we really need to grow up and “get over” this idiocy. Like we have the natural resources to support every single solitary conception. Geeeezzzz. THINK!

I occasionally find hope that America will endure long enough for her citizens to earn the label “intelligent,” but after seeing the 60-Minutes piece on China last night, it’s not looking good.

I love the continuing (and tireless) motif of accusing whoever is running on the Democratic ticket of being "the most liberal in the Senate" on whatever issue is hot today, regardless of evidence to the contrary.

Simply put, in decades past, Obama would have been a dyed in the wool middle-of-the road Republican (much like Bill Clinton), but now, with the Republican party having long since blown a hole through the right wing wall, and entered a dark and distant land rarely traveled...the land of the farthest right wing psychopathic fringe...Obama looks like a flaming liberal. It all depends on where you're standing.

If you've gone as far as you can to the right, everyone not there with you is a damned dirty leftist out to destroy the heaven on Earth that the fringe-maniacs think they're creating. That heaven would be a war profiteering free fire zone where unborn white babies are defended vigorously and to no end, but not so much if they're darker skinned, and from the middle east. Those babies can die as far as the Republican "right to lifers" care...this is abot WHITE AMERICAN babies, not brown Iraqi's or what have you!!! Brain-dead Terri Schiavo got far more attention than any one of the hundreds of thousands of innocent men, women, children and babies that the Republican war machine has eviscerated.

I'll be officially surprised if this gets on Huffpost...a little too real.

ok... I know that it's well worn... BUT, just the same... someone should say it: if a man could get pregnant, abortion would be a sacrament.

Perhaps too far. But if men could get pregnant, the question would never arise. Can you name one man in your life who would allow any intimate decision about his body to be made by a bunch of mostly women in Washington? Reverse the sexes, and you will maybe not get to a sacrament, but you might understand why women are so riled. Abortion control is all about controlling women and limiting their options. It has nothing to do with the right to life. If that were true, then the evangelicals would be as hot about poverty and the life of our planet and the death penalty and most of all an UNJUSTIFIED WAR BASED ON LIES!! May they be haunted by the ghosts of over 4100 innocent soldiers.

When in the World is this Land going to dropped this destructive stone throwing over stuff like this, the drug war and people's personnel sex life? We must drop it all and focus on the things to rebuild this broken land. If I must compare all this to how slavery was allowed for the sake of the Union and Constitution I will be yelling it for 1000's of years from my grave! Lets do something to help Families who want kids, to be able to give them a good life. Not having to work 3 jobs like Bush said was fantastic abut a Lady in I-owe-wa?

Sadly I know too many women (men, too) who are otherwise pro-choice (and sometimes even outright liberal) who still voted for Bush because they were manipulated on issues like taxes and terrorism.

The problem with the abortion debate is that it only slowly chips away at the rights we assume we have today. I think that allows people to be lulled into a false sense of security, and give greater weight to the various other distracting issues the right so skillfully spins in order to get votes.

There's only one thing republican election strategists like less than abortion, and that's for the issue of abortion to go away. WIthout it and its evil twin called homophobia, most of the republican base would evaporate.

But as it turns out the Obama campaign is now admitting the federal legislation and the Illinois bill were almost Identical.

The campaign now says that Obama voted agains the bill because it lacked enough protection for doctors from prosecution.

A question, who besides a doctor could possibly have broken this law?

Hey goofball. Listen to McSame. He talks about Obama more than himself. The rethuglicans make crap up to smear and instill fear. That to thinking people is slander. We have problems in this country, created by the GOP, and abortion is way down on the list. The wars cost money that the thugs are unwilling to pay for. That is a problem. I am not concerned with abortions because I do not plan to have one.

What he is being accused of doing, he did. Yet is unfair to bring this up?

Women may not plan to have an unwanted pregnancy OR an abortion, but if you read the statistics on how many girls and women (of child bearing age, which is anywhere varying from 9-10 yrs. old up to 45-55 yrs. old or so, who are RAPED, and then become PREGNANT and are faced with dealing with this issue, well a lot of those women have to be Republicans, and Evangelicals, Catholics, etc. The reason the Pro-Life Women most of them are for making Abortion illegal, is simply they think that "It can NEVER happen to me!"

It's like people never think that they'll get a BRAIN injury riding a Motorcycle without a friggin' HELMET, "it can NEVER happen to me, I'm careful and I love the wind blowing my hair" duhhhh-- then CRASH!"

Like they never think they'll ever need to depend on WELFARE-- then something catastrophic happens, and BAM-- they are sheepishly down at the Food Bank.

I suppose its an attack on the entire state... and pretyy much every other state where Repiugs have tried this and failed to get such legislation passed.

And of course there is the repug platform thats states if a 12 year old is raped or has sex with her father/incest.. she must give birth... wonderful.

Y'know, if the Repubs try this gutter tactic and it actually works I hope America gets everything it deserves as a consequence. The result is guaranteed to be a much-deserved continuation of the Bush-Cheney national death spiral. Now the chickens coming home to roost are in regard to: "You wanted to relect Bush despite his lies? Here's a 3 trillion dollar pointless war and $4.25 gas in payment for your decision." After this coming election: "You allowed a base smear campaign elect McCain to the presidency? Here's a _(put your own worse-that-worst case scenario here)_ in payment for your decision."
