Hey

A few weeks ago, the Huffington Post's Seth Colter Walls reported that Republican officials and outside groups were set to launch a smear campaign against Barack Obama, accusing the Senator of enabling infanticide.

The issue stems from a state version of the federal Born Alive Infant Protection Act, which proposed that any "viable" fetus surviving a late-term abortion receive sustaining medical care. Obama opposed the measure not because he disagreed with overarching purpose, but because of objectionable side-provisions such as a failure to immunize doctors from legal prosecution.

It was, Seth concluded, a ginned-up argument made more complicated by the fact the bill passed in 2005, "free of any other measures Obama had previously opposed."

And yet, the GOP seems hell bent on furthering the line of attack. In the minutes preceding Saturday's values forum with the presidential candidates, Pat Buchanan discussed Obama's alleged vulnerabilities on the issue of abortion before letting it slip that conservative groups were set to hit the Illinois Democrat on charges of infanticide.

"Barack Obama on the issue of life is further left than anybody in the Congress of the United States. He not only pro abortion but pro-abortion on demand, he is pro-late term abortion, pro-partial birth abortion, he objected to the Supreme Court ruling that upheld the ban. But most important, Barack Obama and the Illinois legislature supported, or rather opposed a bill that would have protected the life of babies born from a botched abortion who were alive, three times. And I do know Republicans are planning, or rather 527s are planning attack ads on this and I will be interested to see if Rick Warren brings it up."

Already, it seems, the wheels are turning. On Sunday, the Associated Press reported that, "a group purporting to tell the "real truth" about Barack Obama's views on abortion wants a judge to rule it is not subject to federal election restrictions on fundraising and advertising. The Real Truth About Obama Inc., a group formed by anti-abortion activists, is trying to establish a Web site and air radio ads. But the group's attorney says his clients fear they will be prosecuted for breaking federal rules that restrict fundraising and advertising by political action committees, or PACs."

As for Warren, he didn't bring up the issue of infanticide during the values forum, though he did quiz Obama to define when "a baby get[s] human rights."

"Well," replied the Senator. "I think that whether you are looking at it from a theological perspective or a scientific perspective, answering that question with specificity is above my pay grade. But let me just speak more generally about the issue of abortion because this is something obviously the country wrestles with. One thing that I'm absolutely convinced of is there is a moral and ethical content to this issue. So I think that anybody who tries to deny the moral difficulties and gravity of the abortion issue, I think is not paying attention."

Senator Obama needs to hit back HARD by pointing out that Republican policies cause abortions, and if abortion is outlawed, Republican policies will continue to cause abortions.

Abortions are caused by:

lack of sex education
lack of birth control
lack of access to health care
lack of jobs
lack of job training
lack of education
POVERTY
and...

MEN NOT TAKING RESPONSIBILITY

(These things also cause the U.S. to have the second worst newborn death rate in the modern world.

This makes me more convinced than ever that Joe Biden needs to be Obama's vp nominee. Biden is a smart streetfighter, something Obama is not, will go right back at the Repubs and make them sorry they opened their mouths. Read Paul Krugman's column in today's NY Times--compare Obama's comebacks on the economy to Bill Clinton's. Too bad Bill can't be the vp nominee!

I think you are right about that. I think Biden is the most reliable source out there and has enormous respect on both sides of the aisle.

Have Obama supporters forgiven Biden for his "clean, articulate" comment?" If so, how encouraging.

This ad should be really effective to those Americans that believe a human life is created when a Man and woman take their pants off in the same room

I no longer donate to Senator Obama!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I donate to MoveOn!
The right wing smear will be more than matched this time.
When will Senator McFlatulence release his FULL military records?
How will he pay for all of the veterans benefits he voted against and now says he will make sure are implemented?
Just where is Vickie Iseman?
Was McFlatulence grandfathered through the Naval Acadamy due to nepotism?

MoveOn closed their 527 arm at Obama's request shortly after he became the presumptive nominee. His campaign wants to have control of the message. They don't want to have sleazy, dishonest negative ads. They are willing to go negative but want to stay honest. I think they need to go a little further. Definintely stay honest and don't get too ugly but I'd like to see some ads highlighting McCain's many flops (showing he's not consistent), his many gaffes (showing he's not sharp), and showcasing his extreme war focus. That is the prism he sees everything through. Here is a web ad someone made. America needs to remember it doesn't want more unnecessary wars.

Please stop donating because your method does not make sense... not going to donate to the candidate because move on will do more than the candidate you will vote for.

You are not going to get that kind of fight. You will get a fight that will call mcsad and his campaign a liar, expose their lies, call him on his record and votes and push the issues. But you will not get the down and dirty campaign from Obama. Nor should you want him to, that low ground is the redumblicans territory and they excel and confusing the issue so the confusion becomes the focus.

Split your donation and give both the fighting power.

IMO

Roe v. Wade is an old tired subject. Everything should be left alone and kept the way it has been since 1973. Everyone knows everybodys stance on the topic - and what is understood need not be discussed.

Sure, it's a very divisive subject, but if people are really passionate about it or even care enough about it to let it sway their vote - they've already decided who they're voting for. I think the 527 attack will be futile and inconsequential.

Dream on! I suppose one can accuse Republicans of ever being bothered by reality. Remember when it was official that Iraq had WMD's? Remember when Karl Rove guaranteed Republican wins in 2006 congressional elections. The only McBush can win is by stealing the election.

We all know it's obvious that everybody is equal and everybody is given certain UNALIENABLE rights by God, and first among these rights is the right to live. - Thomas Jefferson . (paraphrased)
If you actually read the decisions in Roe v Wade they essentially said that deciding on abortion was above their pay grade too. So now the United States has the most liberal abortion laws in the world. Even the Supreme Court doesn't have the right to give or take a human life, everyone is entitled to live, no matter how poor or wretched that life is, or how rich and powerful it is. For Obama to say he voted against the bill because doctors would be prosecuted is totally absurd - how else are you going to enforce a law except by prosecuting those who break it? He was interviewed, while eating peanuts, immediately after the Rick Warren questioning and explained his position on this in detail, but that answer was never seen and never will be seen or heard again by any mass media.

When the world population doubles in the next 50 years... will you still be against planned parenthood?.

Pls note almost all contraceptives .. dont work by stopping fertilzation but by preventing the egg from attaching to the uterus wall..

So if a woman is on the bill half the time she doe not have a child .. she aborts more than likely.

Are you going to arrest her for murder every couple of months? Check every period for signs of a fertilzed egg... Make woman take pregnancy test before they leave the country and if they come back not pregnant arrest them?

And if a father has sex with his 12 year old daughter are you like the repug platform says going to force her to have the child or if she is rapped?

Of course the old testament has no problem with men having 600 wives.. or marrying a second wife when his wife is baren.. When did God send out a memo that a man could only have just one wife now and change the old testament?

Regards

Life does begin at conception although the life may not be recognizable as human as we believe humans to be.

I don't really care one way or the other about abortion, but the defense of pro-choice is going to have to be similiar to the arguments that makes the death penalty ok.

Of course, that means if you argue that way, then the moment the death penalty is gone, there goes your pro-choice argument.

But there is something to be said for consistency....

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 04:16 PM on 08/18/2008

So if we have no right to take life, why again do we have the death penalty?

The death penalty results in the taking of a murderer's life. Abortion results in the taking of an innocent life. To equate the two is nonsense.

Obama did not really answer the question about the rights of feutuses: It was "above his pay grade." What in God's name does that mean? On a very specifically charged issues once again refuses to be brave and give a straight answer. Too sad.

Obama does not approve of abortion and as apresident needs to protect the rights of all citizen.
This question of abortion is a private and personal question between each person and aGod if they believe in one.

I guess because Pat Buchanan says it is true it must be!! he has been so bigoted against Barack Obama since the day he announced he was running for president. I don't think that abortion is going to be such a big issue this year, it is just another wedge issue....used becasue the Repugs have no substantive material to run on...this is so transparently ludacris. Obama satated where he was on this issue long ago...and if the Repugs want to use it against him or any Democrat...it's not like it hasn't ben done before....*laugh*

How do you even begin to have a rational discussion with somebody who insists that you are a human being at the moment of conception? Where is the heart beat? The brain waves? Nearly half of all pregancies end in a miscarriage. Does this mean we should investigate every one of these mothers for manslaughter?

Republican ideology has been in the drivers seat for nearly 8 years now. the majority of Americans feel it has gone too far.

These sort of accusations make it impossible for McCain to paint himself as a "different" kind of Republican or a Republican President that Democrats can live with.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 04:07 PM on 08/18/2008

Most ob/gyns will tell you that the half of pregnancies ending in a miscarriage is a rough number and that they have no way of tracking what is and isn't a miscarriage. Other than the obvious situations think of all the miscarriages that happen prior to the missed period? There is no way to chart something like that.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 04:16 PM on 08/18/2008

What do you consider that product of conception to be other than human?

We can argue about whether or not it is entitled to rights and protections, but to say that when human sperm meets human egg that what is created is something other than human is absurd.

You may say it doesn't look like a human, I say it is exactly what a human looks like at conception.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 04:52 PM on 08/18/2008

No, what you have when the sperm meets the egg is the building block or the foundations of creating a human being. There is no thought there is no heartbeat, just a a mixture of what will eventually become a human being.
