time and energy to family members, friends, and co-workers--and often ignore our own needs. It may not be until we become physically or mentally exhausted, or financially depleted, that we wake up and pay attention to our own needs. At that point we remember the wisdom of the flight attendant: Put on your oxygen mask first, and then you'll be able to help others.

Beliefnet members share the experiences that made them realize they had to start taking care of themselves--and what they're doing about it.

1. Lighten Your Load

Before you can take care of anyone else, you need to be able to care for yourself. Many women are juggling and are really good at it, but it is not for you or yourself. My own personal truth is that I am a part of God and he does not want me to feel burdened. He also wants my load light enough to add a little as I shed what's been taken care of.

I do take time to treat myself to God's gifts of life, my animals, my grandchildren and a root beer float or some other form of reward for managing to survive another day. I know that women are caretakers by nature, so start nurturing the one who matters to the rest of us and that is you!

In my coaching practice I teach how to be healthy and balanced. These things take time and most of us are looking for instant gratification.
In a society that is aging, I believe it's time to slow down and enjoy life. I believe in living in the moment and not dwelling on past memories, losses or mistakes. Of course, we can learn from these things, but don't live there.

God is just a human emotion, locked inside the psyche of a human being because of the Human condition and perpetuated by those that are illusional and those that seek control of others.

Don't be so sure. We can't know with certainty that God (and take that as any divine entity you wish) does in fact exist, but not knowing does not imply that He doesn't.

What I do know with certainty is that we humans do not know everything, do not understand everything around us, even today... nor are we even further along these roads than we ever have been. In fact, there are a great many things our predecessors actually understood better than we do, but the knowledge has been lost.

Even if God doesn't exist, the very concept of a divine entity can encourage an improvement in the way we live and act. If you doubt this, consider that athletes tend to be among the most superstitious people out there. (Wondering the connection? Read on.) Does rubbing a baseball bat with a chicken bone, or wearing one's college basketball shorts throughout one's NBA career, or touching a monument to Babe Ruth before each pitching start, or the myriad of other rites really make a cosmic difference in an athlete's performance? I'm inclined to think not... that notwithstanding, if the athlete BELIEVES it will make a difference, and performs differently as a result, then it DID make a difference!

To paraphrase a line (badly) from the movie, "Bull Durham": "If you believe you're winning because you have sex, or don't have sex, or wear women's undergarments, or you have a gill in the back of your head, you are."
