New York Times:

Taliban insurgents mounted their most serious attacks in six years of fighting in Afghanistan over the last two days, including a coordinated assault by at least 10 suicide bombers against one of the largest American military bases in the country, and another by about 100 insurgents who killed 10 elite French paratroopers.

The attack on the French, in a district near Kabul, added to the sense of siege around the capital and was the deadliest single loss for foreign troops in a ground battle since the United States-led invasion chased the Taliban from power in 2001.

Taken together, the attacks were part of a sharp escalation in fighting as insurgents have seized a window of opportunity to press their campaign this summer -- taking advantage of a wavering NATO commitment, an outgoing American administration, a flailing Afghan government and a Pakistani government in deep disarray that has given the militants freer rein across the border.

As a result, this year is on pace to be the deadliest in the Afghan war so far, as the insurgent attacks show rising zeal and sophistication. The insurgents are employing not only a growing number of suicide and roadside bombs, but are also waging increasingly well-organized and complex operations using multiple attackers with different types of weapons, NATO officials say.

Very soon even the dim-witted among us will start asking questions about Afghanistan. One of these questions will be: WHY ARE WE IN AFGHANISTAN?
A refreshingly believable answer came from a young British recruit.

He said:
I WANT TO KILL PEOPLE. IN AFGHANISTAN I CAN KILL WITHOUT GETTING PUNISHED FOR IT.

There are also unanswered questions such as:
WHAT DO WE WANT IN AFGHANISTAN?
DO THE COSTS JUSTIFY KEEPING UP APPEARANCES?
HOW AND WHEN IS THE WAR GOING TO END?

To begin with, it was the height of conceit when Americans imagined by a few tens of thousands soldiers they could conquer and subjugate 27 million Afghans.
Western leadership still seems convinced that it can accomplish this task by allocating a few extra thousand troops here and there.
Greater Western entanglement in Afghanistan will inevitably bring in more resistance by ordinary Afghans and Pakistani sympathizers.
Taliban are inspired, supported and guided in their anti-Western struggle by the Wahhabi-Salafists, who can tap financial resources of Saudi Arabia, and the manpower of Pakistan. Remember too that in Pakistan the worst-imaginable can go wrong and unlike Iran it actually has a few dozens of nuclear weapons.
The sooner the cocky in the West realize that there is no hope of salvation for them in Afghanistan the better.
West has done enough killing in Afghanistan without getting punished for it.
It is time to get out now.

I noticed on the evening news that President Sarcozy of France went to Kabul to accompany the bodies of his military dead back to France. I think of our purtrid leader who doesn't even want the coffins shown in the media when they return to the USA.

Everything we needed to know about how to deal with Afghanistan we should have learned from the Soviet Russian failure. All of which we helped bring about with some of the same individuals who were running the Bush 43 government. Pathetic always pathetic. No respect for history.

Spoken just like every brutal dictator that ever lived. Here's an idea, how about we mind our own business like the founding fathers said?

If the "worst attack in six years" results in them getting their behinds handed to them...then I a pretty sure we are in good shape. This is far from any sort of failure, or anything out of the ordinary over there. I spent 15 months in that dust pit and I am not "amazed" by this news...as you arm chair Generals are. Let the Warfighters do their thing...and stop trying to speak for the troops. You know nothing of ground truth in Afghanistan and Iraq, and you certainly don't get any hint of it here on Huffpo.

This has been our counter-insurgency delusion for decades now.

"Look at all their dead bodies! They can't keep this up."

The answer is, yes they can.

Read the reports of fighters pouring into Afghanistan. The fact is that our insane Mideast policy will continue to motivate large numbers of young, vigorous men to fight us, for decades, as long as it takes to expel "the Crusaders" from Muslim lands.

Remember the body counts in Vietnam, how they misled American public opinion and could not prevent our defeat. Same story.

The warfighters are voting already -- they're giving six times as much money to Obama as McCain. You seem to be out of touch with your fellow soldiers. Well, some people drink the Kool-Aid, I guess.

Not sure were you get your "the warfighters are voting already" numbers...but I live this life, am embedded in its culture, and have been for the past 14 years. I talk to my troops and know what they feel - they do not want a leader who has no confidence in their ability. The troops in your Armed Services will vote HEAVILY for the Republican nominee...not that your nominee will wan't the absentee ballots opened anyway (we know how you feel about those). Nice "kool-aid" jab...just remember, my Service is to my country and my brothers in arms....and you are all included in that.

At this point, it would greatly improve the credibility of Afghanistan reporting if journalists realised that we are not fighting the Taliban, but simply local tribes. The same tribes in fact that has tired every army in history out of the country. But of course the administration or NATO doesn't like to draw attention to that one (out of many) gaping hole in the so-called War on Terror.

The rhetoric and debate has gone completely sideways.

Repeat after me:

Anyone shooting at Americans in Iraq is Al Qaeda, just like each and every civilian kil_led by US soldiers.

Anyone shooting at Americans in Afghanistan is Taliban, just like each and every civilian kil_led by US soldiers.

Anyone refusing to abide by these standards is a friend of the "terrists."

We cannot win this with military action alone, Russia finally gave up, we should learn from that, were fighting people that we don't understand and trying to impost western culture on them when they are happy living in the stone age.

What do you say? Diplomacy in Afghanistan? Brilliant! I flew into valleys where they did not even know their was a war going on...much less any sense of "western culture". Sure, lets tuck our tails because the Russians did - what a great measuring stick. Easily the weakest, most cowardly post of the day...you win!

But, the surge is going so well and we're winning the war in the name of our God. Our government would not lie to us. We are bringing democracy to those heathen who don't believe in our God and we must kill them until they DO believe as we do. If you don't already know that this is a religious war, then you'll continue to think that this war is for freedom for the middle east countries. It isn't.

My God, look at that picture and see what we're up against. Throwbacks whose minds are stuck in a time warp from a millenium and a half ago but armed with modern weaponry. Who live in 'tribes' and spend their useless lives fighting with other 'tribes' and against the outside world. The sensible and efficient thing to do would be to remove all our personnel and then mechanically depopulate the entire mountainous region of both Afghanistan and Pakistan.

n case you dont know it,the present President,Hamed khazie was a top official of UNICAL(an american oil giant). So to get their pupet in power and consequently their pipelines at no cost, they shifted the cost to the American people by selling the American people a reason to go to war and make poor Americans to go and fight for their pipelines.
To answer your question,Yes I do admire any one who stand up and fight to defend their country from invaders. I believe thats what even Americans have been taught from their childhood at schools. Only they tell u,its an act of Patriotism when an American defends their country and its an act of terrorism when a non-American defend theirs.

But sooner or later, like all before you, you will have to leave their country.

You don't belong there. Period.

In the world balance, Afghanistan could be worse. Or perhaps Irak.
Is 'Vietnam' only a synonym of American defeat?

If you think NATO troops are feeling like they're under seige, imagine how afghans feel. They've had foreign armies occupying their capital for the vast majority of the past 30 years.

You really have to wonder why it is that we can't seem to get military actions right. Politicians brag that we have the best forces in the world but look at the results. The forces are controlled by elected officials who either don't want positive results or are to stupid to get them. In the first Gulf effort the politicians took a quick hitting success story and stopped before we should have and left enough muscle there to abuse their people and become the reason we went in again. Every other situation we have gotten into since Korea has been a mess. I wont count Bosnia because that was a Nato group effort and we had a smaller part. The reeps must really hate this one because the person they dislike the most was the one behind the only positive result. Why is it that we never seem to have the leadership to get things done right? You can twist the past any way you want depending on your political persuasion but they were still sub par compared to our egotistical attitude. Why the reeps spend so much time pounding their chests is beyond me. If I had their track record I wouldn't deploy a single unit.

This story is a joke.It leaves out that American helecopters took out about 25 of the attackers.hard to understand why they cannot put what is going on in Iraq. Its called success.A liberated country of 25 million people in the heart of the middle East.We have took Al Queda apart in Iraq and they are on the run.

I fail to see where having Al Queda or the Taliban 'on the run' is any kind of victory. Wherever they are, they are trouble. They need to be ext erm inated. Victory will be achieved when the last one is a rotting corpse.

War brings money and peace brings nothing. Who would be interested in furthering the well being of our own citizens? Politicians instigate turmoils around the world and keep a perpetual
war - just follow the money. I never believe that the Israelis and Palestinians cannot live together in peace. Money is keeping the mess going and that we have seen when Arafat had died with
millions to his name, having been bought up as a poor person.

Why is it the Republicans were so content to allow bin-Laden and Zawahiri and al-Qaeda escape..?

We sent 170,000 Troops to Iraq, but Bush refused to send the 6-800 Troops The CIA and Special Forces were begging for to get bin-Laden at Tora Bora..!

Why did the Republicans betray every victim of 9/11, and let Bush and Cheney betray all those killed that day..?

The interesting point is that the militants engaged all of theor resources in Iraq, and fought us there, instead of here. The leftovers are now doing the same thing in Afghanistan. They really failed tactically and strategically.
